Not good.. Long-Covid could be a huge health bomb coming. Hopefully, omicron does not give much Long-Covid, but
In a recent interview, Eric Topol, founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, discussed the uncertainty surrounding Omicron, vaccination and long COVID. He said because of Omicron's immune evasiveness it is possible long COVID could be highly prevalent with this variant. And, Topol pointed out, even if vaccination reduces a person's chances of developing long COVID by half, we still may be facing a huge problem by letting the virus sweep through a community.
The virus f**s up our immune system:
In particular, the research noted two types of immune cells known as interferons remained significantly high in the long COVID cohort at the eight-month mark compared to all other controls. This pattern of immune dysfunction was so apparent that the researchers could effectively identify a long COVID patient with 80 percent accuracy just by studying immune biomarkers in a blood sample.
With an enormous wave of Omicron cases, even with a variant that is less severe, a small proportion of those with long COVID could translate to considerable disease burden,” said Dore. “We will know more about Omicron’s impact on long in COVID in the next three months.

What Supreme Court’s Block of Vaccine Mandate for Large Businesses will Mean for Public Health
by Debbie Kaminer

https://theconversation.com/what-suprem ... red-174998

Introduction:
(The Conversation) The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 13, 2022, blocked the Biden administration’s vaccine-or-test mandate, which applied to virtually all private companies with 100 of more employees. But it left in place a narrower mandate that requires health care workers at facilities receiving federal funds to get vaccinated. The ruling comes at a time when the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalization rates continues to soar throughout the United States as a result of the omicron variant.

We asked Debbie Kaminer, a professor of law at Baruch College, CUNY, to explain the ruling’s impact.

1. What did the Supreme Court decide?

The court’s six conservative justices held that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration exceeded its power in issuing the mandate on private companies, which would have covered about 80 million workers.

The majority opinion distinguished between workplace safety and occupational health, determining that “although COVID-19 is a risk that occurs in many workplaces, it is not an occupational hazard in most,” as it can spread wherever people gather. The majority also expressed concern that the mandate was a “blunt instrument” and did not distinguish “based on industry or risk of exposure to COVID-19.”
caltrek's comment: Apparently, the stupidity singularity has now sucked in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Journalist states the obvious: COVID is killing Trump supporters by the hundreds each day

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/1 ... s-each-day
Former New York Times journalist Donald G. McNeil Jr. wrote an article on Medium that stated what everyone with an ounce of intelligence already knows, but wouldn’t dare put in print: Not only is Trump losing hundreds of voters each day to COVID, their deaths are already surpassing the margins the GOP can possibly hope to attain in the swing states. This hasn’t been printed because it’s ghoulish to post the political ramifications to a human life, to which I reply that Democrats aren’t the ones killing these people—their own right-wing disinformation machine is. Hell, we are trying to save them despite the political ramifications.

Trumpists simply don’t believe in wearing masks, or social distancing, and are so anti-vaxx that they won’t even listen to Trump himself as he tries to tout the vaccines. GOP leaders are also undermining public health directives aimed at protecting their own people. Trump did have a change of heart about promoting the vaccines only because someone impressed upon him that the deaths are his voters. He really needs as many as possible in 2024, but it’s too late—and it’s getting worse
If you are wondering why Trump has been getting pissed at DeSantis this is why. DeSantis is trying to undermine Trump for the primaries so he can mount a challenge, and Trump is trying not to stoke this as the GOP will likely lose even with an unpopular Biden in a presidential matchup should these death trends continue. This could cause them to lose states which are otherwise highly competitive. (Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia in particular...)

Some good news for the vaxxed, appears the vaccine does indeed significantly protect againtst long COVID appears to be quite rare amongst those with at least 2 shots.

Again this is why the universal coronavirus vaccine is the true endgame to the pandemic...
