Swiss National Bank chairman rebuffs bitcoin as reserve asset

Source: Reuters
BERN, April 25 (Reuters) - The head of the Swiss National Bank said on Friday that cryptocurrencies failed to meet the institution's currency reserve standards, rebuffing calls by crypto advocates that it hold bitcoin as a hedge against growing global economic risks.

Cryptocurrency campaigners are ramping up pressure on the SNB to buy bitcoin, arguing that the economic turmoil triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs made it more important for the central bank to diversify its reserves.

They have launched a referendum campaign to change the Swiss constitution and require the SNB to hold bitcoin in its reserves alongside gold.

SNB Chairman Martin Schlegel, however, rejected the idea at the central bank's shareholder meeting in Bern.

Senate passes stablecoin bill, a major victory for the crypto world
The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would establish the first federal framework for dollar-backed cryptocurrencies known as stablecoins, a major victory for an industry that has pushed for more favorable oversight in Washington, D.C.

Though passage of the GENIUS Act in the upper chamber by a vote of 68-30 won’t yet make the new legislation law — it still needs approval from the House and President Trump — the crypto world is already lauding the bill’s swift progress as a major step.

“I feel really good about [this bill],” said Dante Disparte, chief strategy officer and head of global policy and operations at Circle (CRCL), the largest US stablecoin issuer.

Circle’s stock has soared roughly 400% since its debut day of trading on June 5, a sign of growing investor enthusiasm for stablecoins as the legislation advances in Congress.

PayPal will soon let businesses that use its digital payments platform accept more than 100 types of cryptocurrency.

The fintech company announced today that it’s rolling out a new “Pay with Crypto” feature in the coming weeks, allowing merchants to accept popular digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP. The platform will support transactions from several major crypto wallets, including Coinbase, MetaMask, and Exodus.

PayPal CEO Alex Chriss said the new feature will help businesses by speeding up transaction times and reducing fees, particularly for international purchases.

FT- The coming crypto crisis

https://archive.is/2X748

Bitcoin specifically (the rest are scams) may be an ok long-term investment for individuals as it appreciates on a long-term basis, but its volatility means it should never be used to back up loans, nor should it play any institutional role.

^^^The fall continues:

Bitcoin Falls Below $70,000 as Market Faces a ‘Crisis of Faith’
By Muyao Shen with assistance from Sidhartha Shukla.
February 5, 2026

Introduction:
(Bloomberg) -- Bitcoin slumped below $70,000, a level last seen 15 months ago, as a broad risk-off sentiment engulfed global markets.

The largest cryptocurrency is extending a downward spiral that has seen it shed more than 44% from its peak in October last year. Bitcoin tumbled as low as $69,821 in early New York trading on Thursday, and is hovering around the lowest levels since Donald Trump’s election win in early November 2024.

“The market is currently navigating a ‘crisis of faith,’” said Shiliang Tang, managing partner of Monarq Asset Management.

While earlier legs of the decline were driven by crypto-specific liquidations, the recent pressure is tied to wider cross-asset stress. Some $722 million of bullish positions across tokens have been liquidated in the past 24 hours, Coinglass data shows.

“Liquidations have been heavy, sentiment has swung risk-off, and price action is now being driven more by balance-sheet mechanics than narrative flow,” said Wenny Cai, chief operating officer of trading platform SynFutures. “This doesn’t signal the end of institutional participation, but it does mark the end of complacency.”

From the Forbes article cited by Firestar464:
The U.S. has similarly built up its own bitcoin reserve, with the federal government’s stockpile totaling between $15 billion and $20 billion in assets as of August, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
This certainly raise my eyebrows. I personally feel very uncomfortable with the idea of the U.S. government holding a bitcoin reserve. The potential for corruption by the kleptocrats seems enormous to me. Partly because this puts the government into the business of picking winners and losers. Am I missing something?

Bitcoin falls to lowest level since Trump took office

5 February 2026

The price of Bitcoin fell to its lowest level in 16 months despite US president Donald Trump's personal and public support for cryptocurrency.

A single Bitcoin went as low as $60,000 (£44,000), its lowest level since September 2024, before rallying slightly.

The drop followed months of surging Bitcoin prices, which saw the cryptocurrency hit an all-time high of $122,200 in October 2025.

"Those who bet too big, borrowed too much or assumed prices only go up are now finding out the hard way what real market volatility and risk management look like," Joshua Chu, co-chair of the Hong Kong Web3 Association told Reuters.
