Indicted Senator Bob Menendez Files for Re-election as an Independent
by Kate Santaliz, Julie Tsirkin and Bridget Bowman
June 3, 2024

Introduction:
(NBC) WASHINGTON — Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., filed Monday to run for re-election to the Senate as an independent, according to two sources with direct knowledge of his plans.

NBC News had previously reported that the three-term senator had gathered enough signatures to run as an independent for another term in the Senate as he faces a trial on federal bribery charges. His filing comes one day before the state's deadline for independent candidates and allows him to collect fewer signatures and still access the ballot; the deadline to run as a Democrat is long past.

The New Jersey Globe first reported that Menendez planned to file Monday. In the end, he filed just over 2,000 signatures, one source told NBC News.
Menendez's decision to run for re-election also allows him to continue to raise and spend campaign funds on legal fees amid the ongoing corruption trial. Menendez has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty.

Menendez's filing also comes on the eve of the state's primary, where Rep. Andy Kim is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for his seat. Kim has previously warned that a Menendez run as an independent could put the deep-blue state in play in November.

Joe Biden Suddenly Leads Donald Trump in Multiple Battleground States

Published Jun 05, 2024

President Joe Biden has overtaken his Republican challenger Donald Trump in three battleground states, according to polls five months before the presidential election.

In March, the incumbent president and the former leader won enough primary races to secure, respectively, the Democratic and Republican nominations in the 2024 presidential election. Polls have so far shown that the results will be tight as the pair are statistically tied in most surveys, or enjoying only marginal leads.

However, according to swing state polling by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Mainstreet Research, there are signs Biden is gaining ground in three key states.

PA-10 (F&M College): Trump +6
Trump 44%
Biden 38%
RFK Jr. 10%
Stein 2%
Someone else 2%
Undecided 4%

Trump +4 district in 2020. Would signal about a tied race statewide

Swing States to Test Biden's Abortion-rights Push
by Erin Doherty
June 10, 2024

Introduction:
(Axios) Democrats hope the backlash to the recent blitz of state abortion restrictions will continue to give them a boost in November. But the bigger question is how much it will help President Biden in the battleground states likely to decide the election.

Why it matters: Since the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Democrats consistently have won midterm and state elections in which abortion has been on the ballot.

• Now the potency of the issue will be tested in a presidential election, in which many voters appear to be focused more on the economy and immigration.

• "The challenge for the Biden campaign is that even though you've had large support for abortion rights on the ballot ... that doesn't necessarily mean those same voters are going to be willing to vote for Joe Biden," Melissa Deckman, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, told Axios.

Driving the news: Polls show that most Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. That's aligned with Biden's position and is why abortion is one of former President Trump's biggest vulnerabilities.
