Three More U.K. Power Suppliers Collapse as Energy Crisis Deepens
Three more U.K. energy companies were pushed out of business by sky-high natural gas prices, bringing to more than 1.7 million the number of customers who have lost their supplier and adding to pressure on the government to step in.

Igloo Energy Supply Ltd., Enstroga Ltd. and Symbio Energy Ltd. announced their collapse on Wednesday, representing a total of about 233,000 households. Those customers will be allocated another supplier by energy regulator Ofgem. Since the start of August, 10 utilities in the country have gone under.

The latest failures increase the chances that government intervention will be needed. The crisis is building even before the start of winter, when power and gas prices typically increase due to demand for heating. Rising costs are making it difficult for larger suppliers -- which have already taken on thousands of additional clients -- to absorb even more, absent government support.

Benchmark natural gas prices in the U.K. rose 10% to a new record on Wednesday. September has been the most expensive month for power prices in the country in records dating back to 2010.

Be safe in the UK! Having a group to talk about futuristic stuff is always nice. Even here in the USA it is still a very small amount of the population especially as the tech gets more exotic and internal like Neuralink.

Energy prices: Industry says government has offered no solution

The government has failed to come up with any solutions to soaring energy prices, an industry leader has said, following a meeting with Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

Energy-intensive industries have called on the government to help them manage the impact of higher energy prices.

Gas prices have risen 250% since January, pushing up costs dramatically.

Gareth Stace from UK Steel said Mr Kwarteng had listened but had provided "no immediate solutions or guarantees".

"We can't wait until Christmas and beyond. Or even a few weeks. We need action now, it needs to be swift, decisive action," Mr Stace told the BBC.

Welsh independence to be considered by commission

Welsh independence is one of the options to be considered by a commission examining Wales' future relationship with the rest of the UK.

The new body, set up by Welsh Labour ministers, will look at how the current system of powers resting in Cardiff and London could change.

Co-chairwoman Prof Laura McAllister said "everything" was on the table.

The Conservatives accused ministers of wasting time and resources, but said they would take part.

Prof McAllister will lead the new Independent Constitutional Commission alongside ex-Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

They do not believe Wales' current constitutional arrangements are sustainable, and plan to talk to people around the country.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said nothing is ruled out from the commission, and anyone with an opinion can make their case.
