Trump is Demanding a Panama-China Break-up and Triggering Political Backlash in Panama
By Jared G. Mitovich
August 19, 2025

Introduction:
(Politico) PANAMA CITY — In his campaign and after his election, Donald Trump complained about high transit fees for U.S. ships crossing the Panama Canal, said the waterway was controlled by China and pledged to retake it. Now, eight months into his administration, he has looked far beyond the canal for ways to undercut Chinese influence in Panama — and created a political headache for leaders here.

The clearest example of the difficult situation Panamanian leaders find themselves in came in June, when the U.S. embassy in Panama announced that the United States was funding the replacement of phone towers built and operated by Huawei, the Chinese tech company, with those made by an American company. The embassy stated openly that the goal of the plan was to “counter China” in the country.

The announcement caught Panama’s president off guard. Already facing a national uproar over his previous perceived concessions to Trump, José Raúl Mulino quickly criticized the announcement but did not deny it. “I ask the U.S. Embassy to refrain from making public pronouncements about decisions made solely by the Panamanian government, regardless of the cooperation that may exist,” he told reporters, adding that he would personally inspect the new antenna installations.

The dust-up illuminated just how wide-ranging the United States’ plan to counter Chinese influence in Panama is — and how politically thorny it’s becoming for Panama’s government.

In recent years, China has wooed Panama and other Latin American countries with economic and security pledges in a bid to chip away at America’s influence in the region — building ports in Peru, smart cities in Brazil and a space facility in Argentina, while also loaning the region billions of dollars. China has undertaken a similar influence campaign in developing regions across the world, most notably in Africa. Its ultimate goal is to reap the trade and economic benefits of such projects and firmly assert itself throughout the world as a superpower

It’s Not Just About Venezuela: Trump Intends a Wider Domino Effect
By Roger D. Harris and John Perry
November 26, 2025

Introduction:
(Counterpunch) It’s increasingly obvious that the US military threats against Venezuela have a wider agenda. Their game plan is regime change, but not only in Venezuela. This is the objective – on a longer timescale in some cases – across several of the countries in the Caribbean Basin, aiming to cleanse the region of governments deemed undesirable to Washington.

As international relations professor at the University of Chicago, John Mearsheimer reminds us, the US “does not tolerate left-leaning governments…and as soon as they see a government that is considered to be left-of-center they move to replace that government.”

In the Financial Times, Ryan Berg, head of the Americas programme at the Washington think-tank CSIS, which is heavily funded by Pentagon contractors, said that Trump’s vision is for the US to be the “undisputable, pre-eminent power in the western hemisphere.” The New York Times dubbed Trump’s ambitions the “Donroe Doctrine.”

After Venezuela, in the current US line of fire, is Honduras. This Central American country faces an election on November 30 which will determine whether the leftist Libre Party stays in power or whether the country reverts to neoliberalism.
Other countries discussed in the article include Cuba, Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, and Chile.

U.S. Progressives Warn Trump Against Interference in Honduras Election
By Julia Conley
November 29, 2025

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) The US Congressional Progressive Caucus on Friday accused President Donald Trump of “flagrantly interfering” in Honduras’ upcoming presidential election after Trump announced his endorsement of right-wing candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura and repeated threats he’s made previously ahead of other electoral contests in which he sought to secure a conservative win.

On the social media platform X, Trump warned that only a victory for former Tegucigalpa Mayor Asfura and the National Party in Sunday’s election will allow Honduras and the US to “fight the Narcocommunists, and bring needed aid to the people” of the Central American country.

He accused Asfura’s opponents—former finance and defense minister Rixi Moncada of the left-wing Liberty and Refoundation (Libre) Party, which is now in power, and sportscaster Salvador Nasralla of the centrist Liberal Party—of being communists and said Nasralla is running as a spoiler in order to split the vote and weaken Asfura. He added that a loss for the right-wing candidate would allow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro “and his Narcoterrorists [to] take over another country like they have taken over Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.”

The president also wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “if [Asfura] doesn’t win, the US will not be throwing good money after bad,” repeating a comment he made during New York City’s mayoral election in which he urged voters to reject progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani or risk losing federal aid for the city. Trump also offered Argentina a $40 billion bailout if voters elected his ally, Javier Milei, earlier this year.

Mexican Authorities Arrest Alleged Crime Figure 'El Botox' in Killing of Lime Growers' Leader
By Fabiola Sánchez
January 22, 2026

Introduction:
(ABC) MEXICO CITY -- Mexican authorities said Thursday that they arrested an alleged organized crime figure in the western state of Michoacan in connection with last October’s killing of an outspoken leader of the state’s lime growers.

Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said that authorities arrested César Alejandro “N,” alias “El Botox,” for allegedly extorting lime growers and for various homicides, including the killing of agricultural leader Bernardo Bravo.

A Michoacan state official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the suspect’s full name was César Alejandro Sepúlveda Arellano, leader of a group known as the White Trojans, or Blancos de Troya. The group is known to work with Los Viagras, a criminal organization allied with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

García Harfuch said there were 11 arrest orders for him for extortion and homicide. He has also been accused of attacking authorities with explosives.

Michoacan Gov. Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla said in a statement that his arrest represented "an overwhelming blow against extortion” in the state, which is Mexico’s largest producer of limes and avocados
