French University to Fund American Scientists Who Fear Trump Censorship
Mar 5, 2025 at 12:41 PM
A leading French university is inviting American scientists who fear their research on subjects like climate might be censored by Donald Trump’s administration to do their work in France.
“The program is called ‘safe place for science,’ and will provide 15 million Euros in funding for some 15 researchers over a 3-year period,” Clara Bufi, a spokesperson for Aix Marseille University, told me in an email. “It targets, but is not limited to, climate and environment, health, and human and social sciences.”
A press release from Aix Marseille University today said that the program is for American scientists who “may feel threatened or hindered in their research,” and is “dedicated to welcoming scientists wishing to pursue their work in an environment conducive to innovation, excellence and academic freedom.”

CHICAGO/WASHINGTON, March 10 - Nate Powell-Palm, an organic farmer outside Belgrade, Montana, was relying on a $648,000 grant from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service to help build a feed mill - an economic lifeline for about 150 area organic grain farmers.
But construction is on hold following the Trump Administration's freeze on some agricultural grants and loans as it conducts a broad review of federal spending.
Now, about 500 tons of baled alfalfa sits untouched in stacks in his fields, and a bill from a Colorado equipment manufacturer is past due. Last week, he traveled with a group of farmers to Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and try to get their frozen USDA grant funding released.
Farmers and food organizations across the country are cutting staff, halting investments and missing key funding amid a USDA freeze on a broad swath of grants, more than two dozen farmers and agricultural support groups in seven states told Reuters. All this comes as Trump has imposed new tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China, sparking trade wars with the biggest buyers of U.S. farm products.

House narrowly passes six-month funding bill as shutdown deadline nears

The Republican-led House voted Tuesday to pass a six-month funding bill that would prevent a government shutdown at the end of the week, overcoming fierce Democratic objections.
The vote was 217-213, with all Republicans but Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky supporting the continuing resolution. One Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted for it.
The measure now heads to the Senate, where its fate is uncertain. Republicans control 53 seats, and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has made clear he’s firmly against it. That means at least eight Democratic senators would have to support the bill to cross the Senate’s 60-vote threshold and send it to President Donald Trump’s desk.
The government is set to run out of money late Friday night.

https://www.rawstory.com/continuing-resolution-2025/House Republicans passed a stopgap bill Tuesday afternoon to fund the government until October and avert a potential government shutdown.
The final vote on the bill legislation took place at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
The legislation keeps federal agencies funded through Sept. 30 and increases defense spending by $6 billion. It additionally would reduce non-defense spending by $13 billion compared to the 2024 budget year.

Laid-off federal workers are overwhelming states with unemployment requests, putting a strain on finances

Dozens of states are warning that their social services are under financial strain due to the volume and pace of unemployment requests from federal employees who have been fired in the DOGE-led job cuts.
At least 100,000 employees have been terminated across various federal agencies and departments over the last seven weeks. Tens of thousands of probationary employees have also been let go and more reductions are expected in the near future.
Federal workers say they have no time to prepare for unemployment and there is minimal communication with the administration about obtaining benefits. They are left scrambling to obtain unemployment with their states so they can continue paying their bills and keeping food on the table.
As a result, states are being inundated with social service requests for unemployment with little to no warning and dwindling financial resources, 19 state attorney generals said in a court filing last week.
