What to Know About Canada's Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre

(Axios) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation from party leadership Monday has put a renewed spotlight on his Conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre.

Why it matters: Trudeau's resignation has ignited a search for his replacement in his Liberal Party, which polls show is lagging significantly behind the Conservative Party ahead of a general election slated to take place by October.

What they're saying: Poilievre was quick to weigh in on the political fracas surrounding Trudeau, writing in a post on X Monday that Liberals wanted to "trick voters by swapping in another Liberal face to keep ripping off Canadians."

• "The only way to fix what Liberals broke is ... to elect common sense Conservatives," he added.

One wonders if Trump has overextended himself politically on this issue of relations with Canada. His tariffs will clearly hurt both middle class and lower income consumers. Canada is a nation full of English-speaking citizens who can flood the social media outlets to help American liberals explain how misguided a policy Trump is pursuing. Canadians can also address the question of their own sovereignty and best explain why they want to retain their independence. Spokespersons for Canada are also now gaining attention on cable news and other more traditional media outlets. U.S. based businesses hurt by the trade barriers may also start pouring funds into opposing Trump, at least regarding his ultra-nationalist trade policies. Republicans in Congress may initially support Trump, but if there is enough of a groundswell of opposition in their own districts, they may develop the backbone necessary to effectively oppose Trump's more extreme measures. Alternatively, a groundswell of opposition may lead to a disastrous defeat for them in the mid-term elections of 2026. Republican efforts to game the electoral system may not be enough to offset this backlash.

One must be careful to not underestimate Trump's political power, but that cuts both ways. A lot depends upon whether people become so dispirited that they fail to engage and organize against Trump and the MAGA crowd. Trump's continued extremism may very well open up new opportunities, but only if the logical minded decide to seize upon those opportunities. We cannot allow ourselves to become victims to Trump's shock and awe tactics.

Canada PM Trudeau says protecting independence is his priority in talks with King Charles

LONDON (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his priority in talks with King Charles on Monday will be protecting his country’s sovereignty after U.S. President Donald Trump recently suggested making Canada the 51st U.S. state.

Trudeau said nothing is more important to his citizens than "standing up for our sovereignty and our independence", ahead of the meeting with Charles, who is Canada’s head of state.

Last week, Charles invited Trump to what would be a historic second state visit to Britain, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer handing over the invitation during a meeting before the world’s media in the Oval Office.

"I look forward to sitting down with His Majesty tomorrow, as always we will discuss matters of importance to Canada and Canadians, and I can tell you that nothing seems more important to Canadians than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation," Trudeau told reporters.

Trudeau, the outgoing prime minister, said last month that Trump’s talk about absorbing Canada "is a real thing" and is linked to the country’s rich natural resources.

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is unwilling to lift Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on the United States if President Donald Trump leaves any U.S. tariffs on Canada, a senior government official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The official confirmed Trudeau’s stance on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The official said Trump and Trudeau spoke by phone around midday. ... Other Canadian officials publicly echoed Trudeau’s position.

“We’re not interested in meeting in the middle and having some reduced tariff. Canada wants the tariffs removed,” Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Trump launched a new trade war Tuesday by imposing tariffs against Washington’s three biggest trading partners, drawing immediate retaliation from Mexico, Canada and China and sending financial markets into a tailspin. Trump put 25% taxes, or tariffs, on Mexican and Canadian imports, though he limited the levy to 10% on Canadian energy.

Why it matters: Carney is assuming leadership during a trade war and escalating tension with the U.S., after President Trump imposed tariffs on its longtime ally and has made repeated annexation threats.

Driving the news: Carney won 85.9% of the vote to be elected Liberal Party leader.
• In his victory speech, he referenced the turmoil created by U.S. tariffs, saying, "These are dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney officially broke things off with the United States Thursday, marking a seismic shift in relations between the longtime allies.

“The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over,” Carney said during a press conference, following a meeting in Ottawa with his ministers to “discuss trade options” in response to Donald Trump’s “permanent” 25 percent tariffs on all imported vehicles and auto parts.

“What exactly the United States does next is unclear, but what is clear, what is clear is that we as Canadians have agency. We have power. We are masters in our own home,” Carney said.

The White House has pretended that the steep tariffs on Canada are a bargaining chip to help curb illegal drug trafficking—a threat so minor that it warranted no mention in the Trump administration’s first Annual Threat Assessment—but Trump openly admitted that he hoped to use tariffs to bully Canada into becoming a U.S. state. His bullying has since escalated into an all-out trade war, which could potentially devastate states along America’s northern border.
