The Supreme Court on Friday struck down a huge chunk of President Donald Trump’s far-reaching tariff agenda, in a major rebuke of the president’s key economic policy. The law that undergirds those import duties “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs,” the majority ruled six to three in a decision Trump had been awaiting.
The ruling is a massive loss for Trump, who has made tariffs — and his asserted power to impose them on any country at any time, without congressional input — a central feature of his administration’s economic and foreign policies. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the opinion of the court. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh dissented. The ruling was silent on whether tariffs that have been paid under the higher rates will need to be refunded.
Since retaking the White House, Trump has rapidly reshaped America’s longstanding trade relationships by imposing a staggering array of import duties that have touched nearly every country on earth. Many of those tariffs were invoked using a novel reading of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. They include Trump’s near-global “reciprocal” tariffs, and separate duties related to the alleged trafficking of deadly drugs into the U.S.
IEEPA does not explicitly mention tariffs, and the court ruling Friday said it the law does not grant the president authority to impose tariffs. Instead, it allows the president to “regulate … importation” of foreign property transactions after declaring a national emergency in order to deal with certain “unusual and extraordinary” threats. The Trump administration has argued that language empowers the president to impose tariffs on foreign goods.

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate committee on Thursday voted to advance the nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin to become homeland security secretary, even as the committee's Republican chairman criticized Mullin and voted against him.
The vote sends President Donald Trump's homeland pick to the Republican-controlled full Senate for a vote, where Mullin will need a majority to be confirmed.
Trump fired embattled Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem earlier this month after she was criticized by Republican lawmakers over her handling of Trump's aggressive immigration crackdown and management of the 260,000-person department.
The Republican president then nominated Mullin, a businessman who spent a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming a senator in 2023, to take over the role.

Introduction:
Read more here: https://www.commondreams.org/news/no-k ... saturday(Common Dreams) A broad coalition of organizations is mobilizing for the third edition of nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations on Saturday, March 28, to denounce President Donald Trump’s lawless authoritarianism, insatiable greed, and his unconstitutional and illegal war with Iran.
Organizers have set up a website to help people find a demonstration near them. As of this writing, there are more than 3,200 events are scheduled to take place on Saturday across all 50 states.
Previous versions of the No Kings demonstrations—which drew millions into the streets—focused on the president’s domestic policies, such as his use US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to terrorize communities and carry out mass deportations, as well as severe cuts made to programs such as Medicaid, Social Security, public education, scientific research, workplace safety, food assistance for the poor, and other programs.
However, this weekend’s protests will also take on the Iran war, which was launched nearly a month ago and has led to thousands of deaths while generating a spike in global energy prices and chaos throughout the Middle East.
As summarized by Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of Indivisible, the three central themes of the protests will be, “No kings, no ICE, no war.”
Don't mourn, organize.

With legacy news organizations such as CNN and CBS News being bought out by essentially conservative (if not outright fascist) billionaires, it is important that other outlets and ways of connecting with each other be put in place. One such resource that has recently been established is Liberty Pear. Here is a link to their site:

Re: USA News and Discussions
Preliminary estimates are that 8 to 9 million people showed up throughout the United States for yesterday's No Kings protest. It will be interesting to see if mainstream news organizations end up agreeing with that estimate.
Don't mourn, organize.
