Amazon rolls out same-day delivery of perishable groceries in 1,000 US cities

Amazon is now letting shoppers in 1,000 cities across the U.S. order perishable food items through its Same-Day Delivery service, as the e-commerce giant seeks to compete more directly with Instacart and Walmart+ in the growing quick-commerce space. Amazon plans to expand the option to over 2,300 cities by the end of the year.

Users can now order fresh grocery items, including produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and more, alongside everyday household products, electronics, and other items available for Same-Day Delivery.

Amazon says its “specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network” will ensure that shoppers receive perishable groceries intact, and that orders undergo a six-point quality check upon arrival and before leaving for delivery. Additionally, temperature-sensitive products are delivered in insulated bags.

Same-day delivery is free for orders worth more than $25 for Prime members. If an order doesn’t meet the minimum amount, subscribers can still choose same-day delivery for a $2.99 fee. For customers without a Prime membership, the service is available with a $12.99 fee, regardless of the order size.

Hey Tech Bro—Your Dream City Is Doomed
By Joe Mathews
August 19, 2025

Introduction:
(Zócalo) In 2020, the rapper Akon secured 136 acres of land to build his own eponymous city on the site of the coastal village of Mbodiène, not far from where he grew up in Senegal.

Akon envisioned Akon City as a real-life Wakanda, the Afrofuturist utopia from Marvel’s Black Panther. But his extensive plans—100% solar power, Africa’s most advanced hospital, a high-tech university, an economy running on Akon’s personal cryptocurrency—omitted one crucial detail:

How Akon City would be governed.

Akon’s failure to plan for governance of his own city created questions about the project that he never could answer. Last month, the Senegalese government confirmed the project no longer exists.

Akon’s combination of ambition, and disinterest in governance, is remarkably common. With the world seeming stuck, a growing number of celebrities, oligarchs, and governments are seeking to create futuristic, paradigm-shifting new cities. From the seaside cliffs of Borneo to the deserts of Saudi Arabia to the swampy delta of Northern California, the rich and famous and powerful are proposing visionary metropolises that advance new aesthetics, pioneer technologies, or surpass previous milestones in sustainability or energy efficiency.

Trump's LA national guard deployment cost taxpayers $120m, Newsom says

Donald Trump’s deployment of the national guard in Los Angeles in response to protests in the city over immigration raids cost taxpayers nearly $120m, the California governor’s office said on Thursday.

The US president sent 2,000 national guard troops into the city in June amid clashes between federal immigration agents and protesters. This week a judge ruled that dispatching the military to accompany authorities on immigration enforcement operations violated federal law.

More than 4,200 national guard soldiers and 700 marines were deployed in the region. Although relatively few assisted with raids, the costs mounted – $71m for food and necessities, $37m in pay and $3.5m in travel, among other expenses, Gavin Newsom’s office said in a statement. About 300 troops remain in the city.

Newsom described the move as “waste, fraud and abuse”.

Hawaii joins state alliance to coordinate public health guidelines

Joining Washington, Oregon and California:
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pushes controversial new policies, Hawaii is joining forces with three other Democratic states in a new public health partnership.

The governors of California, Oregon, and Washington formed the West Coast Health Alliance in response to what they call the Trump administration’s “destruction” of the CDC.

They announced the addition of Hawaii Thursday to coordinate public health guidelines and vaccine recommendations that will be “grounded in science, not in ideology.”

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, who’s a physician, said in a statement

Trump Says Companies Should Stop Reporting Finances Every Quarter

Source: The New York Times
President Trump on Monday proposed to reduce the frequency that public companies report financial information to their investors and the public, suggesting cutting requirements in half by going to two, instead of four, reports a year.

“This will save money, and allow managers to focus on properly running their companies,” Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Public companies in the United States have been required to publish quarterly reports for more than 50 years. Many markets in Europe require companies to report only twice a year.

It’s not the first time Mr. Trump has raised the idea. During his first term, he suggested moving to semiannual instead of quarterly reports, and the Securities and Exchange Commission explored the issue but never progressed to the point of changing the rules. Mr. Trump’s proposal would need to complete a multistep process overseen by securities regulators to become a rule.

The S.E.C. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump to Add New $100,000 Fee for H-1B Visas in Latest Crackdown

Source: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump is expected to sign a proclamation as soon as Friday that would move to extensively overhaul the H-1B visa program, requiring a $100,000 fee for applications in a bid to curb overuse, according to a White House official familiar with the matter.

Trump is set to sign a proclamation Friday, requiring the payment and asserting that abuse of the H-1B pathway has displaced US workers. The proclamation restricts entry under the H-1B program unless accompanied by the payment, added the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss the policy before it was announced.

The move will require a “$100,000 payment to accompany or supplement H-1B petitions for new applications,” according to a fact sheet seen by Bloomberg News. That payment would be in addition to current fees, which are more modest. Fees directly tied to the H-1B visa application currently include a $215 fee to register for the lottery alongside various filing fees.

Trump’s proclamation allows for case-by-case exemptions if in the national interest — opening a potential window for certain companies or industries to seek a workaround from the new fee.

Morgan Stanley warns AI could sink 42-year-old software giant

Thu, September 25, 2025 at 7:03 PM GMT+1

Generative AI didn’t exactly tiptoe into Adobe’s (ADBE) backyard; it basically kicked down the gate.

For a little color, ChatGPT alone has surged to an eye-catching 700 million weekly users, essentially resetting customer expectations.

On top of that, there’s online design tool Canva, which weaponized its “Magic” features, amassing a whopping 220 million monthly users in the process and winning enterprise share.

Similarly, Figma turned its canvas into an AI playground with agent integrations and code-aware workflows.

Naturally, generative AI had Adobe scrambling, as it pushed Firefly into Creative Cloud, launching Acrobat AI Assistant, while building GenStudio for marketers under pressure to scale content.

Disney lost 1.7M subscribers during Kimmel suspension: Report
Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension appears to have been costly for Disney, the parent company of ABC.

Marisa Kabas of “The Handbasket” said a Disney source told her the company saw more than 1.7 million total paid streaming cancellations between Sept. 17 and Sept. 23. “The total includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN,” she wrote on Bluesky.

The company reported 207.4 million subscribers across all three streamers during its third quarter.

ABC suspended Kimmel’s late-night show on Sept. 17, following threats of potential repercussions from the Trump-appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr.

***snip***

Kimmel returned to the airwaves on Sept. 23 when ABC ended its suspension. Nexstar and Sinclair ended their boycott on Sept. 26.

This past August, Nexstar announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire rival broadcast company Tegna for $6.2 billion. This merger would require FCC approval.
