DNC set to start process for deciding which states will vote earliest in 2028 presidential primaries

Source: CBS News

October 17, 2025 / 12:00 PM EDT

Powerful members of the Democratic National Committee will soon decide how states will be chosen to be among the first to vote in the 2028 presidential primaries, moving the party closer to one of the most important decisions it will make in the coming years.

CBS News has learned that at a meeting later this month, the party's influential rules and bylaws panel will focus on the application process to be among the first handful of states to hold a Democratic presidential nominating contest.

Earning one of these prized slots is likely to bring about outsized power in the political process. With that influence comes major attention from candidates, a potential economic boost and the chance to play a role in how Democrats message and campaign on major topics and issues as the party tries to find a path forward after stinging losses in last year's presidential election.

A source familiar with the calendar efforts detailed the materials written by the co-chairs of the party's rules and bylaws panel, including a draft resolution and request for proposal, were shared Friday with members. At the late October meeting, members will have a chance to revise and vote on the work.

California Governor Newsom mulls 2028 US presidential run

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom said in an interview aired on Sunday that he is considering running for U.S. president in 2028 and will make a decision after the 2026 midterm elections.

Newsom has made some moves this year to test the waters for a potential presidential run and has gained prominence within his party in confronting Republican President Donald Trump on a range of issues.

"I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment," Newsom said on the CBS News program "Sunday Morning."

Asked if he was considering a run, Newsom said, "Yeah, I'd be lying (if I said) otherwise."

Rand Paul Flatly Rejects JD Vance as Trump’s ‘Heir Apparent’
By Joe DePaolo
December 21, 2025

Introduction:
(Mediaite) Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) made clear he’s far from enamored with the idea of Vice President JD Vance succeeding President Donald Trump.

In a Sunday interview on ABC’s This Week, host Jonathan Karl quizzed Paul about Vance effectively being endorsed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a 2028 candidacy in a Vanity Fair feature published on Tuesday — as well as Erika Kirk throwing her support behind the vice president.

“We saw Erika Kirk endorse JD Vance already for 2028 for president,” Karl said. “That was interesting. But also interesting was, so did Marco Rubio — who in that article in Vanity Fair said that ‘if JD Vance runs, he’ll be the nominee, and I’ll be one of the first to support him.’ I know it’s early. What do you make of this? Is JD Vance the heir apparent here?”

Paul — while not mentioning the veep’s name — positioned himself squarely against the idea of a President Vance.

“I think there needs to be representatives in the Republican Party who still believe international trade is good, who still believe in free market capitalism, who still believe in low taxes,” Paul said. “See, it used to separate conservatives and liberals that conservatives thought it was a spending problem, we didn’t want less revenue, we wanted less spending. But now all these pro-tariff protectionists, they love taxes. And so they tax, tax, tax, and then they brag about all the revenue coming in. That has never been a conservative position. So I’m going to continue to try to lead a conservative free market wing in the party, and we’ll see where things lead over time.

Bannon World Turns Against JD Vance as MAGA Civil War Heats Up
By Isaac Schorr
December 29, 2025

Introduction:
(Mediaite) It’s the holiday season and John Lennon may be on the radio, but the MAGA civil war that has dominated headlines over the back half of 2025 is far from over.

Indeed, the coalition put together by President Donald Trump is only continuing to fracture, as two of its most prominent principals — podcaster Steve Bannon and Vice President JD Vance — appear to be increasingly at odds.

While Bannon and Vance both hail from the Republican Party’s populist wing, Bannon World is accusing the VP of forming a fist inside of his velvet glove.

Over the last few days, Grace Chong, the CFO and COO of Bannon’s media company, has launched a series of stunning attacks on the odds-on frontrunner to succeed Trump as the GOP’s standard bearer.

On Friday, Chong retweeted a clip of white nationalist Nick Fuentes excoriating Vance — whom he referred to as “jelly donuts” — over his positions on immigration and Israel, as well as his relationships with billionaires Peter Thiel and Elon Musk.

Newsom says he'll run for president if Democrats win back the House

California Gov. Gavin Newsom drops presidential bombshell at SXSW in Texas
The California politician praised Texas Democrats' record turnout during the March primary season — and teased ahead to a major career decision.
By Kelsey Thompson
March 15, 2026
In a bombshell admission during the 2026 South by Southwest Conference & Festivals in Austin on Sunday, March 15, California Gov. Gavin Newsom dropped a Texas-sized gauntlet: If the Democratic Party can flip the House of Representatives during the November 2026 midterm election, he'll run for president in the November 2028 election.

The revelation came during an hour-long featured session and live podcast recording with Vivian Tu, host of the personal wealth and financing podcast Networth and Chill. During the Lone Star State appearance, Tu hosted a "first date" with the California politician as part of the podcast's format, discussing the governor's new book Young Man in a Hurry and his embattled pushback against President Donald Trump.

Regarding the latter, Newsom minced no words as he referred to Trump as an "invasive species" and a "jack*ss" and praised Texas Democrats' turnout in the March primary, which saw Austin-area powerhouse Rep. James Talarico cinch the Democratic U.S. senatorial nomination and substantive turnout from blue voters in key counties that previously voted for Trump.

"I do not believe we will have a fair and free election as we know it in 2028, if we don't take back the House of Representatives in 2026. Nothing else matters," Newsom said when asked about a "second date" with his supporters at the November 2028 ballot box. "It is the hard work that you did here in Texas in this primary where Democrats showed up in record [numbers]. Work that's been done in 30 state races that we've flipped blue from red — the work that needs to be done between now and then to get Speaker [Hakeem] Jeffries that gavel. If we can do that? Then you and I can go on a second date."

Marco Rubio Surges in 2028 Republican Presidential Primary Poll
By Sam Stevenson
May 28, 2026

Introduction:
(Newsweek) Secretary of State Marco Rubio has climbed into a near tie with Vice President JD Vance in the early race for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, according to new national polling that points to a rapidly shifting GOP field.

A new Emerson College Polling survey shows Vance with 36 percent support among likely Republican primary voters, and Rubio close behind at 35 percent. Neither Vance nor Rubio has announced a presidential campaign yet; however, Rubio’s rise reflects a broader reshaping of the Republican electorate since early 2026, with what once looked like a dominant Vance candidacy evolving into a competitive race defined by demographic splits and rising uncertainty.

His growing visibility as Secretary of State, including a recent four-day visit to India aimed at stabilizing strained ties and advancing U.S. strategic interests, also positions him more prominently on the global stage as the 2028 contest takes shape.

Since August 2025, Rubio’s support has surged by 26 points, rising from 9 percent to 35 percent, while a 15-point gain since February has erased Vance’s once commanding lead and turned the contest into a two-candidate race, according to this polling series.

caltrek's comments: I think that polls this far out may be good at identifying the top contenders. Not so good at ranking those contenders.

Some Thoughts on AOC for President
By Megan Wachspress
May 30, 2026

Introduction:
(Liberal Currents) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent appearance at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta set certain segments of the internet abuzz. Was this the long-anticipated signal that she’s running? A poll released shortly afterward added fuel to the fire (or grist for the mill; choose your metaphor), putting her atop other potential candidates, although Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, another favorite of the party’s left wing, was (inexplicably) excluded.

I am both incredibly excited by the possibility of AOC’s candidacy and terrified by it. I am scared for what the inevitable sexist attacks will do to public discourse about women and the trickle-down effects of such a toxic media stew. But on a deeper level it is terrifying to try for the thing you really want—not another compromise or best-under-the-circumstances or what-you-think-is-palatable—knowing that you may learn it isn’t possible, that a secret future you held as a form of hope will just never exist.
Additional Extract:
AOC: “What’s funny about that is that they assume my ambition is positional. They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat. And my ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country. Presidents come and go, Senate, House seats, elected officials come and go, but single-payer healthcare is forever. A living wage is forever. Workers’ rights are forever … When you aren’t attached, when you haven’t been fantasizing about being this or that from the time you were seven years old, it is tremendously liberating because I get to wake up every day and say, ‘how I am going to meet the moment?’”
