Colorado judge rejects bid to keep Trump off 2024 ballot
The ruling is another victory for Trump after courts in Minnesota and Michigan this month rejected similar legal efforts to disqualify the former president from those state ballots.

Quote
A Colorado judge on Friday dismissed an effort to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s ballot in 2024.

Colorado District Court Judge Sarah B. Wallace issued a ruling in the Trump ballot eligibility case, ordering the Colorado secretary of state to place Trump on the state’s primary ballot for next year.

The ruling is another victory for Trump after courts in Minnesota and Michigan this month rejected similar legal efforts to disqualify him from running for president in those states.

A group of Colorado voters filed a legal challenge to Trump’s candidacy in September, arguing that his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his and conduct surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, making him ineligible for office.

I hate to say it but I believe a large part of this population want to war in the middle east and came home agreeing with the enemy. That and they lust for someone like Putin. The hatred against LGBT people, The hatred for anything liberal is sad. I fear for this society and this will probably end progress in science if it is allowed to advance.

Billionaires are Lining Up to Fund Donald Trump’s Anti-democratic Agenda
by Robert Reich
November 21, 2023

Introduction:
(The Guardian) As an ever-greater portion of the nation’s total wealth goes to the top, it’s hardly surprising that ever more of that wealth is corrupting US politics.

In the 2020 presidential election cycle, more than $14bn went to federal candidates, party committees, and Super Pacs – double the $7bn doled out in the 2016 cycle. Total giving in 2024 is bound to be much higher.

The public doesn’t understand the risks of a Trump victory. That’s the media’s fault

That money is not supporting US democracy. If anything, that money is contributing to rising Trumpism and neofascism.

There is a certain logic to this.

Lets be honest my friend. The billionaire class wants their royal power back and wants to be the new age barons ruling over the little peons. This is what this is about! We're their slaves. They want to turn us into russia for a reason...Also look back at 18th century France to understand why they side with the religious.

Lawmakers are Ditching Congress at a Record Pace
by Stef W. Kight, Hans Nichols, and Andrew Solender

November 26, 2023
Introduction:
(Axios) Lawmakers are fleeing Congress at a record clip, with 13 senators and representatives announcing this month they won't seek re-election — the highest number in more than a decade, according to Ballotpedia (see below).

Why it matters: Rancor and recriminations from the House speaker's battle, a surge in partisan censures and impeachments and yet another government shutdown threat have created a perfect storm for retirements.

State of play: The routine infighting and childish behavior — insults like "p***y" and "smurf" were exchanged on Capitol Hill this month — has exhausted some lawmakers. But the exits are also driven by ambition.

From Ballotpedia:
As of November 2023, 38 members of Congress—seven members of the U.S. Senate and 31 members of the U.S. House—announced they would not seek re-election in 2024.

Of the U.S. Senate members not running for re-election, six—U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.)—announced their retirements from public office, while the other—U.S. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.)—is running for governor of Indiana.

Of the 31 U.S. House members not seeking re-election:

• 11—two Republicans and nine Democrats—are running for the U.S. Senate.
• Two—one Democrat and one Republican—are running for state attorney general.
• One Democrat is running for governor.
• One Democrat is running for President of the United States.
• 16—eight Democrats and eight Republicans—are retiring from public office.

The 31 U.S. House members who announced they are not running for re-election in 2024 are seven more than the 24 who had announced they were not running for re-election at this point in the 2022 election cycle. Twenty-seven members had also announced at this point in the 2020 cycle, and 31 had announced at this point in the 2018 cycle.

Billionaire-backed Koch network endorses Nikki Haley for president

Source: CNBC
The political network largely financed by billionaire Charles Koch endorsed former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley for president Tuesday, boosting her primary campaign against the Republican frontrunner, former President Donald Trump.

The Haley endorsement by the Koch backed Americans for Prosperity Action marks the end of a yearlong search for a viable Republican alternative to challenge Trump.

Haley “has what it takes to lead a policy agenda to take on our nation’s biggest challenges and help ensure our country’s best days are ahead,” the group said in a memo. “With the grassroots and data capability we bring to bear in this race, no other organization is better equipped to help her do it.”

The network has massive resources, and it said that it is prepared to deploy them to boost the former South Carolina governor, and to challenge Trump’s increasingly tight grip on his party’s presidential nominating contest.

Voting Rights Defenders Applaud Michigan Democrats for Key Reforms
by Jessica Corbett
November 30, 2023

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) On the heels of approving a clean energy package to combat the climate emergency, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed a series of bills to tackle another urgent issue: voting rights.

"In Michigan, we're proving through our actions that we stand for fundamental American values of freedom and democracy," Whitmer said on social media. "Let's keep working to protect our democracy and ensure our elections are free, fair, and safe."

The governor held a signing ceremony at the NAACP building in Detroit, where she was joined by local leaders, voting rights advocates, and Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who said that "we are here today to protect the people who protect democracy."

The package includes legislation to create criminal penalties for intimidating an election official or preventing them from performing their duties; allow 16-year-olds to preregister to vote when they turn 18; and expand Michigan's automatic voter registration (AVR) process, according to Michigan Advance, which published a roundup of the bills.

"The job of election officials has increasingly become politicized. It's critical that we step up to protect their safety and their ability to do their jobs," asserted state Rep. Kara Hope (D-74), who led some of the bills. "These basic safeguards are critical to addressing the threats to our democracy as we head into 2024."

Here is a roundup of the bills as discussed by Michigan Advance :https://michiganadvance.com/2023/11/30/ ... hts-bills/

caltrek's comments: We live in this strange period where some states are moving to strengthen voter rights and expand voter participation while others are moving to restrict such rights. Part of the widening blue versus red divide. Good to see the once purple state of Michigan move solidly in the direction of strengthening voter rights.

As Governor Whitmer commented: "The penalty (in Michigan) for helping someone get a ride to the polls used to be $500 and up to 90 days in prison."
This latest legislation is quite an improvement over those times.
Don't mourn, organize.
