One common theme that runs through both the defense of Trump and the tax policies of the Republican party is the issue of allowing ultra-rich deadbeats to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. An aspect of our evolving kleptocracy. False consciousness means that a significant number of middle-class conservatives support this tax evasion nonsense. A kind of warped version of trickle-down economics in that they hope that they too can someday engage in such tax dodging. More like trickle down corruption.

Rich Americans Are Stiffing the Taxman to the Tune of $66 Billion
by Michael Mechanic
September 28, 2023

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) America’s rich deadbeats just won’t stop deadbeating.

On Thursday, Senate Finance Committee chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) revealed that his committee had IRS data for tax years 2017-2020 showing that more than 1.4 million wealthy Americans had neglected to file a federal return. All told, these shirkers potentially owe the government as much as $66 billion.

More than 10,000 of them, Wyden wrote in a letter to the IRS commissioner, were repeat offenders. “Perhaps most alarming,” he noted, “was the extraordinary amount of unpaid taxes owed by a small subset of ultra-wealthy non-filers.” They included 8,729 people who potentially owed more than $500,000 each—nearly 1,000 had incomes in excess of $1 million a year. The top 500 non-filers each year—2,000 all told—owed a combined $923 million, Wyden added, yet only two were under active criminal investigation and only 58 had been subjected to liens and levies.
The taxman, clearly, has a long way yet to go.

“I think Americans are rightfully concerned when very wealthy families use loopholes and accounting strategies to avoid paying their fair share,” Wyden told me via his staff. “The people in this letter didn’t even bother with any of that.”

Indeed, America’s oligarchs and their hired guns have become increasingly skilled at tax avoidance in recent decades, and have succeeded in shaping the tax code to their preferences. The deeply unpopular tax cuts Republican leaders shoehorned through Congress in 2017 were the result of an unprecedented lobbying frenzy by corporations and wealthy interests, and it paid off. The nonprofit Americans for Tax Fairness released a new report on Wednesday, based on Forbes data, noting that the wealth of US billionaires has swelled by 77 percent—$2.2 trillion—since the “Trump” tax cuts took effect.

^^^In the end, what else could he do?

A small faction of MAGA extremist want complete dictatorial power. Failing that, they have threatened to have McCarthy removed. The weakness in their position is that there are no viable candidates waiting in the wings to replace McCarty. So, all that is likely to happen would be another round of twenty votes, plus or minus, in which McCarthy would reemerge as the Speaker. So, McCarthy just has to be tough enough in negotiating with Democrats to not lose too much support among the more mainstream Republicans in the House. Hence the dramatics and up to the last-minute deal making.
Don't mourn, organize.

On the brink of a federal shutdown, the House passes a 45-day funding plan and sends it to Senate [View all]

Source: AP

Updated 3:03 PM EDT, September 30, 2023
WASHINGTON (AP) -- On the brink of a federal government shutdown, the House on Saturday swiftly approved a 45-day funding bill to keep federal agencies open as Speaker Kevin McCarthy dropped demands for steep spending cuts and relied on Democratic votes for passage to send the package to the Senate.

The new approach would leave behind aid to Ukraine, a White House priority opposed by a growing number of GOP lawmakers, but the plan would increase federal disaster assistance by $16 billion, meeting President Joe Biden's full request. The package was approved 335-91, with most Republicans and almost all Democrats supporting. the bill.

With hours to go before the midnight deadline to fund the government, the Senate was also in for a rare weekend session and prepared to act next. "We're going to do our job," McCarthy said before the House vote. "We're going to be adults in the room. And we're going to keep government open."

With no deal in place before Sunday, federal workers will face furloughs, more than 2 million active-duty and reserve military troops will work without pay and programs and services that Americans rely on from coast to coast will begin to face shutdown disruptions. The House measure would fund government at current 2023 levels for 45 days, through Nov. 17, moving closer to the bipartisan approach in the Senate. But the Senate package would have added $6 billion for Ukraine to fight the war against Russia and $6 billion for U.S. disaster relief.

Rep. Matt Gaetz says he will move to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker this week
Source: NBC News

Oct. 1, 2023, 9:55 AM EDT
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said Sunday that he intends to file a motion to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week after Congress voted to averted a shutdown hours before the deadline.

"I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week," Gaetz said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think we need to rip off the band aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy."

Gaetz also confirmed that he'll soon file a motion to vacate the speakership in an appearance on ABC News' "This Week," after the Senate and House on Saturday night voted to pass a short-term bill to keep the government funded through Nov. 17.

The legislation authorizes additional disaster relief money and buys Congress more time to reach a funding agreement for the full year. However, it does not include aid to Ukraine. McCarthy removed the provision from the bipartisan Senate bill, saying it should be considered separately at a later date.

Now McCarthy is going to depend on the Democrats to survive, which means he'll have to make concessions such as funding for Ukraine among other things.

North Carolina's Patrick McHenry takes over a temporary House speaker
North Carolina Republican Patrick McHenry has taken over as House speaker pro tempore following Kevin McCarthy’s removal from the leadership role in Congress’s lower chamber moments ago.

Per House rules, McCarthy submitted to the chamber’s clerk a list of lawmakers who would take over if his seat becomes vacant, of which McHenry was apparently first.

McHenry is the chair of the financial services committee, and voted against removing McCarthy. After picking up the gavel, he recessed the House.
