Government's plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda are lawful, High Court rules
Monday 19 December 2022 at 4:46pm

The government's plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda are lawful, the High Court has ruled.

Challenges were brought against the policy announced by then-home secretary Priti Patel in April, with Ms Patel describing it as a "world-first agreement" that would deter asylum seekers from crossing the Channel.

The first deportation flight – due to take off on June 14 – was grounded amid a series of challenges against individual removals and the policy as a whole.

But at the High Court in London on Monday, senior judges rejected arguments that the plans to provide one-way tickets to the east African nation were unlawful.

Lord Justice Lewis, sitting with Mr Justice Swift, dismissed the challenges against the policy as a whole, but ruled in favour of eight asylum seekers, finding the government had acted wrongly in their individual cases.

New banknotes featuring portrait of King Charles III unveiled
7 hours ago

New banknotes featuring a portrait of King Charles III have been unveiled by the Bank of England.

The notes are due to enter circulation by the middle of 2024.

They will be in circulation at the same time as those which feature Queen Elizabeth II.

It means that notes which have the late monarch’s portrait on them can still be used as normal.

The addition of the King’s image will be the only change on existing designs of the Bank of England’s £5, £10, £20 and £50 polymer plastic notes.

Target date for cleaning up waterways in England is moved back by 36 years

Thu 22 Dec 2022 16.55 GMT

Targets to clean up the majority of England’s rivers, lakes and coastal waters suffering from a cocktail of agricultural and sewage pollution have been pushed back from 2027 to 2063.

Not one English waterway, including rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters is in good ecological and chemical health at present, with pollution from water treatment plants and agriculture the key sources of the damage. The Environment Agency said on Thursday £5.3bn was being invested for the next five years to stop the further deterioration of waterways.

But the summary documents within the plan reveal the target for all 3,651 water bodies to achieve good chemical and ecological status – a state in which they are as close to their natural state as possible – was now decades away in 2063.

Until Brexit the UK government was signed up to the water framework directive, which required countries to make sure all their waters achieved “good” chemical and ecological status by 2027 at the latest. The UK government later reduced the target to 75% of waterways reaching the single test of good ecological status by 2027 at the latest. The target for the majority of waterways to achieve good status in both chemical and ecological tests has now been pushed back to 2063, according to the documents.

By 2027, only 4% of waters are currently on track to be in good overall condition.

Voters believe 'nothing in Britain works anymore' as they give Labour huge poll lead

A majority of the public (57%) said they believe that nothing in Britain works anymore - as they rewarded Labour leader Keir Starmer with a 24 percentage point lead over the Tories

Updated 09:14, 23 Dec 2022

Voters have warned they believe nothing in Britain works anymore as they give Labour a huge poll lead.

Rishi Sunak is facing criticism over his failure to stop strikes hitting the public sector by getting around the table with unions.

A majority of the public (57%) said they agree with the statement that nothing in Britain works anymore.

[...]

Mr Starmer has built up a significant poll lead of 24 percentage points heading to Christmas. If there was an election, 46% now say they would back Labour, ahead of the Tories who have fallen back to 22%.

The Liberal Democrats are on 8%, the Greens on 6% and Reform on 8%.

Targets to make England 'smoke free' by 2030 will be missed by nearly a decade, charity warns

Thursday 29 December 2022 01:01, UK

Government targets to curb the number of smokers in England by 2030 will not be met, according to new analysis.

In 2019 ministers set out an ambition for England to become "smoke-free" by 2030 - which is said to be achieved when adult smoking rates fall to 5% or less.

But Cancer Research UK said it may take another 10 years for the target to be met.

The charity said that progress in cutting the number of smokers has "slowed" and that based on current trends, the Government will not achieve its goal until 2039.

A new report from the charity added that in 2030, some 8.3% of the population will describe themselves as smokers.

Jacob Rees-Mogg ‘considering running to be next leader of the Tory party’
2022-12-29 11:35

Jacob Rees-Mogg is reportedly weighing up a bid to run for the Tory party leadership should Rishi Sunak tank at the next general election.

According to Daily Mail reports, the former Business Secretary believes himself to be the “standard-bearer” for the right-wing of the party and could help them rebuild in the event that predictions of a catestrophic defeat prove accurate.

The latest polling suggests Sir Keir Starmer’s party could scoop as many as 482 seats at the next election, with the Tories being left with just 69 seats.

The poll was carried out using a so-called “MRP model”, which has been shown to be more accurate than traditional surveys.

Unlike other polls, it takes account of a wide range of factors to predict how certain groups are likely to vote.
