Liz Truss will become UK's next prime minister after beating Rishi Sunak in race to succeed Boris Johnson
Monday 5 September 2022 12:51, UK

Liz Truss will become the next prime minister after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest.

Ms Truss, who was the favourite to win the contest, will succeed Boris Johnson on Tuesday and become the nation's third female leader.

She secured 81,326 votes (57%) to Mr Sunak's 60,399 (43%).

It means she won by a comfortable majority, though it was tighter than some had expected.

Ms Truss said it is an "honour to be elected" as she thanked her party for organising "one of the longest job interviews in history".

Pound falls to lowest level against dollar since 1985

By Lora Jones
Business reporter, BBC News

The pound has plummeted to its lowest level against the US dollar since 1985.

Sterling fell 0.64% to $1.145 on Wednesday afternoon - a level not seen in 37 years.

This is partly because the pound has been hit by a weaker outlook for the UK economy, as well as a strong dollar, the Bank of England says.

The Bank also warned that little can be done to stop the UK falling into a recession as the war in Ukraine continues.

Its governor, Andrew Bailey, said it would "overwhelmingly be caused by the actions of Russia and the impact on energy prices".

It expects the economy to shrink in the last three months of 2022 and keep shrinking until the end of 2023.
