^^^This reminds me of something I recently learned regarding libel laws. Apparently, in the 18th century one could successfully sue for libel regardless of whether the information been presented by the defendant was accurate or not. In the United States, at least, it wasn't until after the Revolution that an essential aspect of a successful libel action was that the information being presented was false. If I am not mistaken, I think that also applied to whether public officials could sue or not.
Don't mourn, organize.

Police Federation of England and Wales no longer has confidence in home secretary, calling pay freeze 'final straw'
Thursday 22 July 2021

The Police Federation of England and Wales says it no longer has confidence in Home Secretary Priti Patel and has branded a pay freeze for officers "the final straw".

The body, which represents rank-and-file officers, has also withdrawn its support and engagement from the Police Remuneration Review Body, labelling the current pay mechanism "not fit for purpose".

It added that officers "overwhelmingly supported" the measures.

National Chair John Apter said: "The move follows Wednesday's pay announcement and Home Secretary Priti Patel's claim that the government 'recognises the bravery, commitment and professionalism' of police officers, while offering no improved financial package to our members to illustrate that is the case."

"I cannot look my colleagues in the eye and do nothing," Mr Apter added.

Morrisons shares plans for supermarkets with no staff
21 hrs ago

Supermarket giant Morrisons has shared plans to ditch staff entirely from one of its stores.

New plans have revealed customers will be required to download an app via their smartphone which will need to be scanned upon entrance. Shoppers will then choose their items from the shelves and place them in bags without the need to scan anything at the tills.

Payment will be taken through the app once cameras have detected the chosen items.

The idea has been tested at the firm's head office in Bradford, reports the ECHO.

Why could Stonehenge be stripped of world heritage site status?
Fri 23 Jul 2021

Unesco has confirmed that Stonehenge could be stripped of its world heritage site status, over its concern that a road tunnel, backed by the government, would irreversibly damage an area of “outstanding universal value”.

A report to Unesco’s world heritage committee setting out concerns about the £1.7bn A303 road tunnel was approved unchanged on Thursday. Unless the designs for the two-mile (3.3km) tunnel are extended and changed, the committee recommends placing Stonehenge on Unesco’s list of world heritage in danger next year.

Last month the high court was told that a decision by Grant Shapps, the transport secretary, to approve the tunnel last November was unlawful because it did not properly consider damage that would be done to a string of prehistoric sites and many thousands of ancient artefacts.

Unesco’s committee found that if the high court confirms planning consent for the tunnel, Stonehenge should be placed on its danger list. It said that despite minor improvements to the original plan, the proposed cut-and-cover tunnel would irreversibly damage an area of “outstanding universal value”.

Shapps ignored advice from a Unesco mission in 2018 and his own planning inspectorate that the tunnel would cause “substantial harm” and should not go ahead. Unesco had recommend a longer, bored tunnel so more of the proposed dual carriageway would be covered.

Boris Johnson’s ‘vaccine bounce’ fades as PM’s ratings turn negative two years after he entered Downing Street

July 23, 2021 5:18 pm (Updated 10:51 pm)

Boris Johnson’s “vaccine bounce” appears to have faded as his approval ratings have slipped back into negative territory two years after he first took office.

The Prime Minister has gone backwards with the public since entering No 10, with a third of voters saying their view of the Conservative leader is more negative now than it was when he came to power.

A survey for i by Redfield & Wilton Strategies found just 9 per cent of all voters – and 16 per cent of Conservative supporters – “strongly approve” of Mr Johnson’s performance in office. By contrast, 26 per cent say they strongly disapprove.

His overall approval rating – the proportion of people in favour minus those against – now stands at -6, down from +9 just three months ago when the Government was revelling in the success of the vaccine rollout. Mr Johnson’s ratings hit +39 at the start of the Covid-19 crisis but fell to -11 in the autumn as public scepticism about the pandemic response grew.

Asked whether their views on the Prime Minister have changed since he took office two years ago, 34 per cent said they now think less of him with 18 per cent saying their opinion has improved.

Tobacco firm Philip Morris calls for ban on cigarettes within decade
Sun 25 Jul 2021

The chief executive of tobacco business Philip Morris International has called on the UK government to ban cigarettes within a decade, in a move that would outlaw its own Marlboro brand.

Jacek Olczak said the company could “see the world without cigarettes … and actually, the sooner it happens, the better it is for everyone.” Cigarettes should be treated like petrol cars, the sale of which is due to be banned from 2030, he said.

Government action would end the confusion felt by smokers, some of whom still thought the “alternatives are worse than cigarettes”, Olczak told the Sunday Telegraph. “Give them a choice of smoke-free alternatives … with the right regulation and information it can happen 10 years from now in some countries. You can solve the problem once and forever.”

Philip Morris International (PMI) recently said it wanted half its turnover to come from non-smoking products as it morphs into a “healthcare and wellness company” with executive pay tied to its new mission to “unsmoke the world” by phasing out cigarettes.
