Hillsdale cuts ties with Florida school embroiled in 'David' controversy
Michigan's Hillsdale College said Thursday it is no longer affiliated with a Florida charter school embroiled in a controversy involving a parent complaint that accused the school of showing students pornography by exposing them to Michelangelo’s “David” statue.

Hillsdale says Tallahassee Classical School's license to use the conservative college's curriculum has been "revoked and will expire at the end of the school year."

"This drama around teaching Michelangelo’s 'David' sculpture, one of the most important works of art in existence, has become a distraction from, and a parody of, the actual aims of classical education," Hillsdale College said in a Thursday news release. "Of course, Hillsdale’s K-12 art curriculum includes Michelangelo’s “David” and other works of art that depict the human form."

Hope Carrasquilla, the principal of Tallahassee Classical, was forced to resign last week after the “David” sculpture was included in a sixth-grade lesson on Renaissance art. One parent complained and said the sixth-graders were exposed to pornography; others requested that the school inform them about the lesson before showing the "David" to their children, the Associated Press reported.

North Carolina Republicans Look To Ax Participation Trophies With New Bill
Three North Carolina Republicans are supporting efforts to do away with participation trophies in government-run youth sports leagues.

The GOP-backed bill filed on Thursday would bar local government-operated youth sports or recreation groups from giving “awards for participants based solely on their participation” and restricts awards to those “based on identified performance achievements.”

The bill is sponsored by North Carolina state Sens. Timothy D. Moffitt, Eddie D. Settle and Bobby Hanig.

The proposed ban would require the support of the state Senate, House and a signature from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) to become law.

Judy Blume: book banning now much worse in US than in 1980s
(Guardian UK) The author Judy Blume says a rise in intolerance in America has led to a “much worse” epidemic of book banning than she experienced in the 1980s.

The children’s and young adult author, whose frank depictions of adolescence and puberty have long caused controversy, said it was time to fight back against censorship.

Her 1975 novel, Forever, which deals with teenage sexuality, was one of 80 books banned in one Florida school district last month, for dealing with issues such as sex, race and gender.

In an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Blume said of book banning: “I thought that was over, frankly … I came through the 80s when book banning was really at its height. And it was terrible. And then libraries and schools began to get policies in place and we saw a falling-off of the desire to censor books.

“Now it is back, it is back much worse – this is in America. It is back so much worse than it was in the 80s. Because it’s become political.” ..............(more)

After clearing gallery, Florida Senate OKs 6-week abortion ban
TALLAHASSEE — After an emotional debate including outbursts from spectators that prompted the president to clear the gallery, the Florida Senate voted 26-13 on Monday for a six-week ban on abortion.

“This Legislation is unrealistic and a major overreach into our lives, and, in essence, it is a total ban on abortion,” Sen. Linda Stewart, D-Orlando said.

The measure, which outlaws most abortions after six weeks, has been the source of lengthy, intense and emotional debate in both the House and Senate chambers, with legislators sometimes sharing their own abortion stories.

At one point during the debate, Sen. Anna Maria Rodriguez, R-Miami, was speaking in favor of the bill when someone from the audience started shouting.

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, asked for the Sergeant of Arms, told the audience member to be quiet and halted the debate to demand decorum.

“Visitors in the gallery, this is a very emotional issue,” Passidomo said. “We treat members of both sides of the issue with respect and dignity and if you speak up you’re going to be asked to leave.”

Florida Bill Would Bring Bans on Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory to Colleges and Universities

Gender theory. Ethnic studies. Intersectionality.

If Florida’s House Bill 999 passes, students at the state’s public colleges and universities would be prohibited from majoring or minoring in these academic disciplines as well as in related fields, including queer theory, critical race theory, feminist theory and social justice.

“The fields that are being threatened are fields that challenge the status quo, and these are well-established, respected disciplines,” said Irene Mulvey, president of the American Association of University Professors. “They enrich academia. They enrich our civilization, but they’re being dragged into the culture wars now. And I feel like these bills are an attempt by people in power to maintain the status quo . . .at the expense of a free and open democratic society.”

Wording in HB 999 has also sparked fears that it could threaten sororities, fraternities and other clubs on campus that cater to Black students and other students of color. Currently in the Florida House’s Education and Employment Committee, HB 999 will take effect July 1 if enacted. Along with its companion legislation in the Florida Senate, the bill is one of the latest introduced in a state that has passed a series of recent laws to limit what students can learn about race, gender, sexuality or inequity.

Another piece of legislation in front of the legislature, HB 1069, would restrict what can be taught in sex education courses in Florida’s public schools, so that abstinence is emphasized and students learn that sex is determined “by chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, and internal and external genitalia present at birth.” Florida’s HB 1223 would prohibit use of pronouns that don’t match a child’s assigned gender at birth and has been described as an expansion of legislation commonly known as “Don’t Say Gay.” Both of these laws would also take effect in July, if enacted.

Idaho governor signs 'abortion trafficking' bill into law, 1st of its kind
Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill into law on Wednesday that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion across state lines without parental consent.

The new law is the first of its kind in the United States and comes less than a year after Idaho banned nearly all abortions.

"With the U.S. Supreme Court's reversal of Roe vs. Wade last summer, the right and duty to establish legal policy on abortion was finally returned to our state democratic process," Little, a Republican, wrote in a letter to Idaho lawmakers on Wednesday, announcing he had signed the legislation.

The text of House Bill 242, which was first introduced to the Idaho Legislature in February, lays out a new crime of "abortion trafficking," in which an adult helps a pregnant, unemancipated minor obtain an abortion or abortion pills "by recruiting, harboring or transporting" them without the consent of their parent or guardian. Anyone who is found guilty of committing the crime will face two to five years in prison and could also be sued by the minor's parent or guardian. A parent or guardian who raped their child will not be allowed to sue.

Texas judge suspends FDA approval of abortion pill mifepristone
A federal judge in Texas blocked U.S. government approval of a key abortion medication Friday, siding with abortion foes in an unprecedented lawsuit and potentially upending nationwide access to the pill widely used to terminate pregnancies.

The highly anticipated ruling puts on hold the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, a medication first cleared for use in the United States in 2000. The ruling will not go into effect for seven days to give the government time to appeal.

U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk, a nominee of President Donald Trump with long-held antiabortion views, agreed with the conservative groups seeking to reverse the FDA’s approval of mifepristone as safe and effective, including in states where abortion rights are protected.

The Biden administration will probably appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, and the case could make its way to the Supreme Court. The lawsuit followed the Supreme Court’s elimination of the constitutional right to abortion last June, which allowed states to outlaw or sharply restrict the procedure.
