‘We will fight like hell’: US western states band together to protect abortion rights
Sat 25 Jun 2022

Democratic state governors of California, Oregon and Washington issued a new commitment to enshrine abortion rights across the west coast on Friday, as the US grappled with the supreme court’s ruling removing the federal right to abortion.

Calling their states a “a safe haven for all people seeking abortions and other reproductive health care services”, California governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon governor Kate Brown, and Washington governor Jay Inslee pledged to defend access to reproductive healthcare and protect those who cross their borders from other states seeking care.

They vowed to hamper out-of-state investigations or efforts to target those who receive services in their states, including barring local law enforcement from cooperating with outside agencies.

State attorney generals who supported the supreme court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade: Georgia's Chris Carr, Texas's Ken Paxton and Missouri's Eric Schmitt.

“California has banded together with Oregon and Washington to stand up for women, and to protect access to reproductive health care,” Newsom said in a statement. “We will not sit on the sidelines and allow patients who seek reproductive care in our states or the doctors that provide that care to be intimidated with criminal prosecution. We refuse to go back and we will fight like hell to protect our rights and our values.”

I'm the only one who doesn't find this that important? It's the only way to satisfy both parties.
The real problems would come if it became nationwide during Trump presidency (or reverted by Democrats when elected).

Biden Signs Bipartisan Gun Bill, Ending Years of Stalemate
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON — President Biden on Saturday signed into law a bipartisan gun bill intended to prevent dangerous people from accessing firearms and invest in mental health across the country, breaking through years of stalemate over whether to toughen the nation’s gun laws.

Mr. Biden signed the bill a day after it cleared the House, and two days after it passed the Senate, where a small bipartisan group of senators labored to reach a compromise that could break a Republican filibuster, a hurdle that has long stymied any effort to change gun laws.

Passage of the legislation came one month after a horrific mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, left 19 children and two teachers dead, as the country was already reeling from a racist attack at a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y. And while Mr. Biden acknowledged that the bill fell far short of the sweeping gun control measures he had pushed for, he noted that it included some long-sought priorities.

“God willing,” Mr. Biden said as he put his pen down, “it’s going to save a lot of lives.”

More on that from Naoh Kim writing in Mother Jones:
... The bill...shores up background checks for 18- to 21-year-olds and eliminates the so-called “boyfriend loophole”—a gap in existing law that previously allowed domestic abusers to acquire deadly weapons so long as they and their partners were unmarried and childless.

The legislation also includes funding for states to implement red flag laws. However, the red flag provisions aren’t mandatory, and, as my colleague Abby Vesoulis has reported, it’s extremely unlikely that Republican-controlled states will adopt them.

The legislation is notable for breaking through a sclerotic legislative branch mired in partisan wrangling. Nevertheless, it falls far short of the proposals that gun control advocates have pushed for and that most Americans say they want in public opinion surveys, such as universal background checks and assault-weapon bans. Democrats, including Biden, have described the bill as a small step forward that will help break the seal on gun safety, rather than a conclusion to the debate.

January 6 testimony puts Donald Trump in even greater legal peril
Wed 29 Jun 2022

Donald Trump and his two closest advisers could face widening criminal exposure over the Capitol attack after ex-White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified about their potentially unlawful conduct to the House January 6 select committee at a special hearing on Thursday.

The testimony revolved around the disclosure – one of several major revelations from Hutchinson – that the former president directed supporters to descend on the Capitol even though he knew they were armed and probably intended to cause harm.

Donald Trump arrives to speak at the rally in Washington DC on 6 January 2021.

Hutchinson testified under oath that Trump was deeply angered by the fact that some of his supporters who had gathered on the National Mall were not entering the secure perimeter for the Save America rally at the Ellipse where he was due to make remarks.

The supporters did not want to enter the secure perimeter, Hutchinson testified, because many were armed with knives, blades, pepper spray and, as it later turned out, guns, and did not want to surrender their weapons to the Secret Service to attend the rally.

“I don’t fucking care that they have weapons. They’re not here to hurt me,” Trump exclaimed in an extraordinary outburst of fury, according to Hutchinson. “Let my people in. They can march to the Capitol from here. Let the people in. Take the fucking mags [magnetometers] away.”

The response from the former president is significant for two main reasons: it makes clear that he had been informed that his supporters were carrying weapons, and that he knew those armed people intended to make a non-permitted march to the Capitol.
