Debt ceiling: Support for 14th amendment solution mounts on Capitol Hill
The support on Capitol Hill for what was once a fringe legal theory is growing by the hour as the debt ceiling talks head into their final days.

On Thursday, a group of of 11 progressive senators led by Sens. Tina Smith (D-MN), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) released a new letter to President Biden calling on him to prepare to cancel the debt ceiling by invoking the 14th amendment.

“We write to urgently request that you prepare to exercise your authority,” they write, adding that Republicans have made it "seemingly impossible" to reach a deal.

Thursday’s action in the Senate comes in addition to growing support across Capitol Hill on the issue. The head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus — Rep. Pramilla Jayapal (D-WA) — recently said that the vast majority of the 101 Representatives in her group support invoking the 14th Amendment over giving concessions to Republicans.

House Speaker McCarthy says debt ceiling negotiations can't resume until Biden returns from G-7 summ
Source: CNBC
House Speaker McCarthy says debt ceiling negotiations can't resume until Biden returns from G-7 summit:

The on-again, off-again deliberations on Capitol Hill surrounding the debt ceiling are back off-again, as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters on Saturday Republicans will only continue negotiations when President Joe Biden returns from the Group of Seven Summit in Japan.

“Unfortunately, the White House moved backwards,” McCarthy said about the current deliberations surrounding the debt ceiling. “I don’t think we’re going to be able to move forward until the president can get back in the country,” he added.

Biden is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C., from the G-7 summit on Sunday. The president said at a press conference from the summit that he is “not at all” concerned about the negotiations and believes “we’ll be able to avoid a default and we’ll get something decent done.”

If I was president I'd use the 14th amendment and run on the reality that the republican party wants to destroy our economy and kill old and disabled people.

8 women join suit against Texas over abortion bans, claim their lives were put in danger

The original lawsuit was filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights in March.

By Nadine El-Bawab May 22, 2023, 7:30 AM
The Center for Reproductive Rights is expected to add eight more women to a lawsuit it filed against Texas over its abortion ban, claiming their lives were put at risk due to the law. This brings the total number of plaintiffs to 15.

The suit alleged that Texas' abortion bans have denied the plaintiffs and countless other pregnant people necessary and potentially life-saving medical care because physicians in the state fear liability, according to a draft of the complaint shared with ABC News.

Texas has several abortion laws in place, prohibiting all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, except in medical emergencies, which the laws do not define. One of the bans — called SB8 — prohibits abortions after cardiac activity is detected, which kept several plaintiffs from accessing care despite their pregnancies being non-viable, according to a draft of the suit.

Under Texas' bans, it is a second-degree felony to perform or attempt an abortion, punishable by up to life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The law also allows private citizens to sue anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion..............................................................

I agree. I am so tired of rules and procedures that inevitably favor conservatives. The spending at issue has already been authorized by Congress. There should be no need to re-authorize the debt ceiling, especially in light of the 14th Amendment.
In a Politico interview, progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) acknowledged invocation of the 14th Amendment could potentially lead to court challenges and market instability, but said “those are bridges that we can cross when we get to [them].”

Democrats unanimously back debt ceiling discharge petition

https://www.yahoo.com/news/democrats-un ... 18800.html
Every House Democrat has endorsed the discharge petition to force a vote on legislation to hike the debt ceiling and prevent a default, party leaders announced Wednesday.

The signatures of the last final holdouts — Reps. Jared Golden (D-Maine) and Ed Case (D-Hawaii) — puts the total number at 213, meaning Democratic leaders still need to find five Republicans if the petition is to be successful.

“It takes a handful of members of the GOP to say, ‘Enough,’” Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.), the Democratic whip, told reporters in the Capitol.

That’s a heavy lift, since it would require GOP lawmakers to buck the wishes of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who is in tense negotiations with the White House over a debt-ceiling package and is opposed to a vote on the “clean” debt-limit hike preferred by Democrats.

The procedural gambit is a long-shot: Only two discharge petitions have been successful in the last two decades. Still, Democratic leaders are hoping their party’s unanimity on the document will pressure moderate Republicans to sign on, particularly if the talks between President Biden and McCarthy don’t yield fruit and the threat of default is imminent.

McCarthy set to send the House home without a debt limit deal
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appears set to send members home after votes on Thursday, signaling that debt negotiations with the White House will continue as the risk of a first-ever default grows.

While the speaker urged lawmakers to stay close to the nation’s capital over Memorial Day weekend, his top deputy, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, announced that the House will recess following votes on Thursday as negotiators continue to work on a debt ceiling deal.

“Following tomorrow’s votes, if some new agreement is reached between President Biden and Speaker McCarthy, members will receive 24 hours’ notice in the event we need to return to Washington for any additional votes, either over the weekend or next week,” he said.

Negotiators are trying to make progress on a handful of outstanding issues – in addition to cutting federal spending, which remains a major sticking point. Two sources familiar with the matter said the White House is weighing the GOP demands in exchange for winning the lone concession offered by McCarthy: raising the debt limit.
