Navy demoted Ronny Jackson after probe into White House behavior

By Dan Diamond and Alex Horton

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Tex.) served as personal physician to Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump between 2013 and 2018. (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)

Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician turned GOP congressman, regularly touts his military bona fides. ... "As a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral with nearly three decades of military service I understand the commitment and sacrifices made by servicemen and servicewomen to serve our country," the two-term Texas representative writes on his congressional website, posted to a page listing his work on veterans issues. {1}

But Jackson is no longer a retired admiral. The Navy demoted him in July 2022 following a damaging Pentagon inspector general's report that substantiated allegations about his inappropriate behavior as a White House physician, a previously unreported decision confirmed by a current defense official and a former U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive personnel move. {2} ... Jackson is now a retired Navy captain, those people said -- a demotion that carries significant financial burden in addition to the social stigma of stripped rank in military circles.

Despite the demotion, Jackson has continued to refer to himself as a retired rear admiral, including in statements released since the Navy reclassified him as a retired captain. Former president Donald Trump and other Republicans have also continued to publicly describe Jackson using his former rank; it's unclear if they were aware of his demotion.

Jackson's office did not respond to requests for comment about the Navy's 2022 personnel action and his demotion.

Biden wastes no time laying into Trump as he comes out swinging in fiery State of the Union address
12 minutes ago

President Joe Biden had barely started giving his State of the Union address from the House of Representatives rostrum when he laid into his predecessor and likely 2024 election opponent, former president Donald Trump, for threatening to allow Russia to run roughshod over the democracies of the West while simultaneously castigating the Republican-led Congress for failing to authorise more defence aid to Ukraine.

Invoking Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s speech in 1941 warning of Hitler’s armies being “on the march” in Europe, Mr Biden said he’d come to the same chamber to tell the nation that it is facing an “unprecedented moment in the history of the Union” and to “wake up the Congress and alert the American people that this is no ordinary moment”.

“What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack, both at home and overseas, at the very same time overseas, Putin of Russia is on the march, invading Ukraine and sowing chaos throughout Europe and beyond,” he said.

“If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you, he will not. But Ukraine can stop Putin if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself.”

The president stressed that Ukraine isn’t asking for Americans to give their lives overseas, and said he is working to keep American soldiers from having to fight there. But he warned that funding for Ukraine is being blocked by “those who want us to walk away from our leadership in the world,” referring to Republicans who oppose aid to Kyiv because it would be a political win for the president.

Nebraska Board of Ed rejects proposal to ban sexually explicit school library books
he Nebraska State Board of Education held an emotional discussion Friday on whether sexually explicit material belongs in school libraries — and what students are allowed to read.

The lengthy debate came on a proposal from board member Kirk Penner to revise state regulation Rule 10 to prohibit “pornographic materials or sexually explicit content” in all Nebraska public school libraries. The majority of the board voted against discussing it further, letting Penner’s proposal die on a 5-3 vote.

Jacquelyn Morrison, Patti Gubbels, Patsy Koch Johns, Lisa Fricke and Deborah Neary opposed it. Kirk Penner, Elizabeth Tegtmeier and Sherry Jones voted for the proposal.

While the entire board said they agreed pornography doesn’t belong in classrooms, the majority said Penner’s proposal didn’t follow the right procedures, was too vague and could target specific student populations.

Nebraska State Board of Education member Kirk Penner listens during a meeting in Lincoln on Friday.

Trump will not give a penny to Ukraine - Hungary PM Orban
1 hour ago

Donald Trump will not fund Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion if he is elected US president again, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has said.

"He will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war. That is why the war will end," the conservative premier said after meeting Mr Trump in Florida.

The former US president has pledged to end the war "within 24 hours" if elected - but provided no details.

Mr Orban is openly backing his long-term ally in the 2024 White House race.

"It is obvious that Ukraine cannot stand on its own feet," Mr Orban told Hungary's M1 TV channel late on Sunday.

Wouldn't be a surprise there under Trump's "Chistofascist dictatorship" as Will put it. Also, wasn't really sure where to put this as it covers 3 countries.

Biden budget proposal would raise taxes on large corporations, lower deficit over 10 years
President Biden will unveil his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year Monday, calling for tax increases for large corporations, and for billionaires to pay a minimum 25 percent tax rate.

The president’s budget proposal for fiscal 2025 would reduce the federal deficit by about $3 trillion over a 10-year period, the White House said, largely by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans and businesses. The budget would also crack down on corporate profit sharing.

A White House official said the budget would cut taxes for millions of low- and middle-income families, and it includes proposals to lower the cost of child care, prescription drugs, housing and utilities.

The budget proposal will call for reforms to strengthen Medicare and Social Security, and it will contain several other White House priorities, including funding to combat climate change, for small businesses, for national paid leave and for cancer research.
