Turkey is much like Russia and China in that it wishes to restore what it sees as territories that belong to it, by force if necessary. Turkey has been doing a creeping annexation of Northern Syria for years now and has been looking to Turkify the population much like how Russia wants to Russify the Ukrainian people they are displacing. This is going to become the theme of the next 25 years of the century is crises that involve what I consider to be the great 3 revanchist powers: Russia, China, Turkey. The west should not kid itself about Turkey either... it really isn't our friend.

Greece Experiencing Unprecedented Barrage of Turkish Violations of Airspace, Says Greek Prime Minister
June 8, 2022

Introduction:
(Arab News via Eurasia Review) Greece’s prime minister said on Tuesday his country has experienced an “unprecedented barrage” of Turkish violations of its airspace and is ready to defend its sovereignty and sovereign rights.

“We had an unprecedented barrage of overflights and a constant return to unthinkable assertions of supposedly reduced sovereignty of the Greek islands,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis was quoted as saying by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

He described the development as “unpleasant” because he thought that Greece and Turkey had found a “framework for mutual understanding” after he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He said Turkey’s provocative rhetoric “can lead us nowhere.”

He continued: “Our country’s obligation is to point out this provocation to our allies and seek their support, whether we are talking about the US or the EU. This support was given publicly and unconditionally.”

Turkey should face international court over Yazidi genocide, report says
Wed 6 Jul 2022

Turkey should face charges in front of the international court of justice for being complicit in acts of genocide against the Yazidi people, while Syria and Iraq failed in their duty to prevent the killings, an investigation endorsed by British human rights lawyer Helena Kennedy has said.

The groundbreaking report, compiled by a group of prominent human rights lawyers, is seeking to highlight the binding responsibility states have to prevent genocide on their territories, even if they are carried out by a third party such as Islamic State (IS).

The lawyers, grouped under the title of the Yazidi Justice Committee (YJC), said there was accountability under international law for states to prevent the crime of genocide under the Genocide Convention. Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, chair of the YJC, described the genocide of the Yazidi people as “madness heaped on evil”.

“Mechanisms in place could have saved the Yazidis from what is now part of their past, and part of their past partial destruction,” he said.

It is widely accepted that genocide was attempted against the Yazidis, a religious minority, from 2013 in Iraq and Syria. The report, which followed a three-year inquiry that investigated the conduct of 13 countries, concluded three of them failed in their duty to take reasonable steps to prevent the genocide.

Turkey, Israel to re-appoint ambassadors after four-year chill
Source: Reuters
JERUSALEM/ANKARA, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Turkey and Israel said on Wednesday they will re-appoint respective ambassadors more than four years after they were called back, marking another milestone after months of steady improvement in relations.

The two regional powers had expelled ambassadors in 2018 over the killing of 60 Palestinians by Israeli forces during protests on the Gaza border against the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

But they have been working to mend long-strained ties with energy emerging as a key area for potential cooperation.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid's office said on Wednesday the two countries decided to restore full diplomatic ties.

Officials: 25 dead, many trapped in Turkish coal mine blast
Source: AP

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — An explosion inside a coal mine in northern Turkey killed at least 25 people, local officials announced, while rescuers working through the night were trying to bring dozens of others trapped to the surface.

The explosion occurred 6:45 p.m. at the state-owned TTK Amasra Muessese Mudurlugu mine in the town of Amasra, in the Black Sea coastal province of Bartin.

Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said a preliminary assessment indicated the explosion was likely caused by firedamp — a reference to flammable gases found in coal mines.

There were 110 people in the mine at the time of the explosion, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who traveled to Amasra to coordinate the rescue operation, told reporters. Most of the workers were able to evacuate following the blast, but 49 were trapped in a higher risk area of the facility, the minister said.

Why Istanbul’s Mayor Was Sentenced to Jail – and What It Means for Turkey’s 2023 Presidential Race
by Ahmet T. Kuru
December 15, 2022

Introduction:
(The Conversation) A Turkish court’s decision on Dec. 14, 2022, to jail Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu for two years and seven months for insulting public officials hung on comments he made three years ago. But its impact will be felt on an event taking place in a few months time: the Turkish presidential election.

If the appeals court upholds Imamoglu’s conviction – based on a 2019 speech in which he allegedly called Turkey’s supreme election council “fools” – the opposition figure will be barred from holding any political office. It hands President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a double win: Not only does it mean Erdogan would retake control of Istanbul, but it also would potentially prevent his strongest challenger from running in the June 2023 election.

Whether politically motivated or not, the court ruling might not work out the way Imamoglu’s rivals hope – as Erdogan should well be aware. The Turkish president’s long road to political dominance began with his election as Istanbul mayor in 1994. The secularist elite, who at that time dominated Turkey’s politics and feared the rise of Erdogan’s religious conservatism, banned him from politics through a court decision that saw him imprisoned for four months over inciting religious hatred in a speech. That sentence, in fact, only bolstered Erdogan’s support. Perhaps similarly, Imamoglu’s sentencing was followed by thousands of supporters’ taking to the streets in protest.
Conclusion:
The danger for Erdogan is that if the jailing of Imamoglu is taken by Turkey’s population to be politically motivated, it might make his rival more popular. If so, it might prove a case of history repeating itself in Turkey – only this time, to Erdogan’s misfortune.

India’s Fulsome Assistance in Double Quick Time to Quake-devastated Turkiye Could Help Rebuild Broken India-Turkiye Ties.
by P. K. Balachandran
February 9, 2023

Introduction:
(Eurasia Review)

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly fought back tears when speaking about the devastation in Turkiye at a Bharatiya Janata Party meeting in New Delhi. The tragedy which has claimed 15,000 lives in Turkiye and Syria combined, reminded him about the havoc caused by the quake in Bhuj in his home State of Gujarat in 2001 when he was Chief Minister. India’s fulsome assistance in double quick time to quake-devastated Turkiye could help rebuild broken India-Turkiye ties.

On Turkiye’s side, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has, in the recent past, watered down his stridently anti-Indian stand on the sensitive Kashmir issue. By doing so, Erdogan had removed the only hurdle in the way of friendly and fruitful bilateral relations.

Combined with recent changes in the geopolitical environment, the way is being cleared for a fresh look at India-Turkiye ties. A rapprochement appears to be on the cards.

Moving at lightning speed, India dispatched 50 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) accompanied by 60 Para Field Hospitals and staff. The airlifted cargo included a specially trained dog squad, medical supplies, drilling machines and other equipment. Undeterred by Pakistan’s refusal to give overflight rights, the Indian planes took a longer route to reach Turkiye. A grateful Turkiye embassy in Delhi tweeted: “Thank you India, for your support and solidarity.”

*Edit:
Turkey will be known as Türkiye at the United Nations from now on, after it agreed to a formal request from Ankara.

Several international bodies will be asked to make the name change as part of a rebranding campaign launched by the Turkish president late last year.

"Türkiye is the best representation and expression of the Turkish people's culture, civilization, and values," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in December.

The UN says it made the change as soon as it received the request this week (written June 2022).

Most Turks already know their country as Türkiye. However the anglicised form Turkey is widely used, even within the country.

Some 80,104 people have been injured in Turkey alone, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, speaking in the city of Sanliurfa. A few survivors are still being pulled from the rubble, however, more than 130 hours after the quake.
