Government refuses to publish economic benefits estimate of latest Brexit trade deal
2 hours ago

The government has refused to publish an estimate of the economic benefits of its latest planned Brexit trade deal.

Ministers had faced mockery over the small benefits to the economy expected from previous free trade agreements – with most giving tiny boosts to GDP.

But the Department for International Trade has now decided not to publish a figure for an enhanced agreement with Israel, arguing that it "isn't appropriate".

Opposition parties say the government should be more transparent about its trade talks and come up with an estimate – though economists say the benefits of the renegotiated deal could be difficult to measure.

When the government launched trade talks with the US in 2020 it revealed that it was expecting the agreement to provide just a 0.16 per cent boost to GDP by 2035 - the size of a forecast rounding error.

The surprising consequences of the Brexit freedom bill
19 JAN 2023

Thousands of pieces of European Union law will lapse at the end of the year unless they are repealed or renewed by the government.

Under the Retained EU Law Bill – also known as the Brexit freedom bill – introduced during Liz Truss’s short tenure as prime minister, the government has committed to repealing or replacing around 4,000 pieces of legislation tied to the UK’s membership of the EU, many to do with employment and environmental laws.

It is a mammoth task with a tight deadline – under the timeline set by ministers, the government has until the end of 2023 to decide which laws they want to either scrap, retain or replace. Unless restated or replaced by the end of December, many of these EU laws will automatically lapse, a process known as “sunsetting”.

Why are they doing it now?

Sir Jonathan Jones, the former head of the government legal department, said the government had left itself a “needlessly short space of time to review such a vast quantity of legislation”, calling it a “terrible way to make law”, said PoliticsHome.

Three government departments – the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for Transport and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – are expected to extend the deadline until 2026, said The Times. The government, however, has so far said it has no plans to extend the deadline, but a senior government source told the paper that it was “inevitable” the 2023 deadline would have to be scrapped.

Parliament likely to hold first ever debate on the consequences of Brexit
North East Bylines 26-01-2023 09:39

The government is about to come under increasing pressure to hold a public inquiry into the consequences of Brexit. A parliamentary debate is likely to be held soon to discuss the growing demand for an official independent inquiry. Remarkably, it will be the very first time that parliament has ever held a debate on the consequences of Brexit.

Last night, support for a petition calling for such an inquiry reached 100,000 signatures

That means that Parliament will almost certainly hold a debate. Petitions which reach 100,000 signatures are almost always debated, according to Parliament’s own website.

Opinion poll on Brexit inquiry

Significantly an opinion poll, conducted by the polling company, Omnisis, just six days ago, suggests that 62% of the British public now want to see an inquiry held into how Brexit has impacted Britain’s economy, businesses and citizens – and that only 22% are against the idea.

Sunak marks Brexit anniversary by claiming benefits 'empower communities' as IMF delivers damning growth forecast

1h ago
09.31 GMT

Good morning. At 11pm the UK will mark the third anniversary of the moment that it left the European Union. Increasingly, by a margin of around 60% to 40%, Britons are saying that this was a mistake, but in the Conservative party conceding anything like this would amount to a thought crime, such is the grip the Brexiters have on the party, and instead ministers are marking the anniversary by talking up the supposed benefits.

Still, what the government is saying about Brexit is still considerably less upbeat than what Boris Johnson and his colleagues were saying, or promising, this time three years ago. This is what Rishi Sunak said about the anniversary in a statement released overnight.
In the three years since leaving the EU, we’ve made huge strides in harnessing the freedoms unlocked by Brexit to tackle generational challenges. Whether leading Europe’s fastest vaccine rollout, striking trade deals with over 70 countries or taking back control of our borders, we’ve forged a path as an independent nation with confidence.

And in my first 100 days as prime minister, that momentum hasn’t slowed – we’re cutting red tape for businesses, levelling up through our freeports, and designing our own, fairer farming system to protect the British countryside.

This is just the beginning of our plans to deliver on our five priorities, including growing the economy so we can create better paid jobs, and I’m determined to ensure the benefits of Brexit continue to empower communities and businesses right across the country.
But it is not a good day to be going on about growing the economy, with the IMF saying it expects the UK to be the only G7 country where the economy will shrink this year.
