Biden Administration Gives Big Bump to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
by Alexandra Jones
August 16, 2021

Introduction:
WASHINGTON (Courthouse News) — Marking the largest benefit increase in the program's history, the U.S. Department of Agriculture published a plan Monday to boost food stamp benefits roughly 25% above pre-pandemic levels.

“The resulting cost adjustment is the first time the purchasing power of the plan has changed since it was first introduced in 1975, reflecting notable shifts in the food marketplace and consumers’ circumstances over the past 45 years,” the agency wrote Wednesday announcing the news.

The permanent increase comes about as a result of President Joe Biden’s January 22 executive order that the USDA conduct a data-driven review of its Thrifty Food Plan to ensure the amount of benefits recipients receive are up-to-date and reflective of the latest science per the bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill.

The additional benefits will be available to the more than 42 million recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beginning in October, the USDA said. On average the cost adjustment will raise per-person benefits in the program from $121 to $157 per month.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack called the modern updates an investment in the nation’s health Monday.

If this basic income is given with no stipulations sure. I can think of quite a bit of things I'd spend cash on with an easy 2k. Of course some will blow it the same day so it balances out just fine in terms of spending money in the economy. Its one of those things I want to believe in but have to take an easy approach to seeing if it will pan out as they say it should.

Technological Inheritance and the Case for a Basic Income

Leaving aside numerous questions about how best to structure a basic income, the idea of providing people with income as a matter of right — whether or not they do what society considers “work” — runs into age-old concerns about individual responsibility as well as endless arguments about political and economic equity. Until these are confronted, the prospect of significant change in the direction of any form of basic income is clearly highly uncertain.

A good starting point is the simple reality that most of what we all receive as “income” far, far exceeds what anyone can claim as the result of the “work” they actually do in the here and now. Once this fully documented reality is understood, the moral case for a basic income for all becomes very different from conventional understandings. The starting point is recognition that most “income” is, in fact, a gift of the past.

"The conflation of work ethic with intrinsic value as a human being is one of the great tragedies of the western world."

How very true.

A must read. :!: :!: :!:

THE PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL BASIC MEANS OF PRODUCTION (UBMOP)

https://ubmop.com/

For decades, globalization has fueled economic growth like never before. But, we have come to realize that global supply chains can be disrupted unexpectedly, leading to potentially damaging consequences. That’s one trend that must change if we are ever going to be free of the dystopian future so many science fiction tales warn us about.

How does Universal Basic Means of Production fit into all this? Consider the idea of “Universal Basic Income.” Universal Basic Income is often referred to as a basic monthly paycheck. But, basic income doesn’t have to mean a monthly support check, food stamps, a housing stipend, or other forms of support from the government. UBI could also apply to non-monetary support such as access to locally produced goods and services at much lower costs or even free.

UBMoP will open up many new business opportunities for producers here at home and across the globe. Newly advanced technology allows the average person to produce and distribute products from local facilities rather than from large factories located thousands of miles away. It will give us more control over what is produced, how much is produced, and how to prevent excess waste, creating a more circular economy.

^^^Excellent article.

One of the challenges to introducing a Universal Basic Income system is the same one that faced (and still faces) socialism. How to introduce UBI in one country?

What I mean is that if you do introduce UBI in one country, then there is the fear that people in neighboring countries will want to emigrate to that country, thus draining the welfare system of the pioneering country. This can be partially mitigated by residency requirements: to qualify for UBI, you must agree to live in the country for a specified period of time. Implied in that agreement is that you will otherwise participate as a productive member of the country to which you have emigrated.

There is still a basic PR problem: "your mitigation measures may not prove effective, why should we take the risk?"
