Brits to receive Universal Basic Income for the first time ever

For the first time ever, Universal Basic Income is set to be trialled in England in what is being called an 'exciting' plan.

Under the scheme, 30 people in two areas will be selected to receive an unconditional sum of £1,600 each month for two years.

The effects the additional cash has on their lives will be monitored for research purposes.

Advocates for this model argue it provides additional security for people in and out of work, and would help wipe out poverty completely.

On the other hand, critics insist that such a policy would prove to be too pricey and that it would be better to target support to those in need.

Robots alone might not save us, but they can help

Simon Duffy argues in this blog post that the automation of jobs is not a compelling reason for a basic income. Capitalists will always find a way to make a profit. However, I argue below that technology makes the transition to a basic income more likely. It does this through providing greater choice over how we spend our time and providing us with a greater ability to meet our own needs.

The iris scanning freaks me out a lot, but as a working class person I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't consider it for a few hundred dollars a month. It remains to be seen how much monthly income this thing will actually provide for people. I also wonder if it can be spoofed by wearing contacts or not to alter the true data of one's iris?

How “Windfall Profits” from AI Companies Could Fund a Universal Basic Income

(Vox) There’s a lot of money in AI. That’s not just something that startup founders rushing to cash in on the latest fad believe; some very reputable economists are predicting a massive boom in productivity as AI use takes off, buoyed by empirical research showing tools like ChatGPT boost worker output.

But while previous tech founders such as Larry Page or Mark Zuckerberg schemed furiously to secure as much control over the companies they created as possible — and with it, the financial upside — AI founders are taking a different tack, and experimenting with novel corporate governance structures meant to force themselves to take nonmonetary considerations into account.

Demis Hassabis, the founder of DeepMind, sold his company to Google in 2014 only after the latter agreed to an independent ethics board that would govern how Google uses DeepMind’s research. (How much teeth the board has had in practice is debatable.)

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is structured as a nonprofit that owns a for-profit arm with “capped” profits: First-round investors would stop earning after their shares multiply in value a hundredfold, with profits beyond that going into OpenAI’s nonprofit. A 100x return may seem ridiculous but consider that venture capitalist Peter Thiel invested $500,000 in Facebook and earned over $1 billion when the company went public, an over 2,000x return. If OpenAI is even a 10th that successful, the excess profits returning to the nonprofit would be huge.

Meanwhile, Anthropic, which makes the chatbot Claude, is divesting control over a majority of its board to a trust composed not of shareholders, but independent trustees meant to enforce a focus on safety ahead of profits.
