Trump-DeSantis tensions ratchet up
The long-simmering tensions between former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) are reaching a boiling point ahead of a potential 2024 primary clash.

Trump has griped behind the scenes for months about DeSantis’s rapid political rise, including chatter about a future White House bid. But the complaints from the former president have only grown louder, raising concerns among some Republicans about a looming brawl between two GOP heavyweights.

“President Trump is the one clearly picking a fight here, and it’s a fight that's too early and unnecessary,” said Sam Nunberg, a former adviser to Trump who stressed that he is neutral in a dustup between Trump and DeSantis. “We’re not in Republican primary season. This is a fight for mid-2023. It’s not a fight to start having in 2022.”

Still, Nunberg added, “If Donald Trump believes he is punching down when he’s attacking Ron DeSantis, then why do it?”
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

Recent events may impact upon the 2024 presidential election. Here is one perspective relating to how voters may process it all.

John Bolton: Trump Cared More About a “Spaghetti Bowl of Conspiracy Theories” Than Ukraine
by David Corn
March 8, 2022

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 ... sia-putin/

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) As Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion kills Ukrainian civilians and raises fear of nuclear war, Donald Trump and his minions have repeatedly insisted that this war would have never happened had Trump won a second term. That, says former ambassador John Bolton, is bunk. In an interview with Mother Jones this week, Bolton, who was Trump’s national security adviser from 2018 to 2019, discussed Trump’s lack of concern for Ukraine during his White House tenure; Trump’s odd relationship with Putin; Bolton’s decision not to testify during the first Trump impeachment; a big secret about Trump that Bolton is not at liberty to fully reveal; and more.

Bolton noted that when he served in the White House, Trump paid “very little attention” to Ukraine “until the summer of 2019 when [Trump] realized that he could have the possibility of holding up the obligation and delivery of substantial security assistance [to Ukraine] in an effort to get access to the Hillary Clinton computer server that he felt was in Ukraine, finding out about Hunter Biden’s income in Ukraine, and all of these things in this spaghetti bowl of conspiracy theories. That was the first time he really focused” on Ukraine. By this point, Putin had for years been backing pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine who were fighting government troops and Ukrainian militias. Yet Trump was more concerned with the nutty and unfounded notion pushed by right-wing conspiracists that the Democratic National Committee computer servers hacked by Russian cyber-operatives in 2016 were somehow whisked away to Ukraine to cover-up purported Ukrainian intervention in the election.

… He (Trump) praised the thug-leader throughout the 2016 campaign. He recently hailed Putin’s violent and murderous moves in Ukraine as “genius.” Did Bolton have any insight into Trump’s crush on Putin? “It went along, in a sense, with his infatuation with [Chinese President] Xi Jinping, with Recep Erdogan of Turkey, with Kim Jong-Un of North Korea… I’m not a shrink so I can’t give you the clinical reason. But I think Trump thought of himself as a big guy and he liked talking to other big guys and they talk about the big-guy things that they did, and he kind of admired them.”

For those of you who still may be tempted to vote Republican in 2024 due to a belief that they would bring economic prosperity for the poor and lower middle class, consider this:

New GOP Plan to Raise Taxes on Working People and End Social Security
by Thom Hartmann
March 14, 2022

https://www.alternet.org/2022/03/reveal ... -security/

Extract:
(Alternet) As (Mitt) Romney pointed out, though, about 47 percent of Americans in 2012 made so little money that, after applying the standard deduction, they paid no income tax.

Rick Scott and the GOP’s solution to this situation isn’t to raise the income of working-class people. Quite to the contrary, they’re suggesting that low-income people should be hit with their very own income tax — in addition to the dozens of other taxes they’re already paying — all so multimillionaires and billionaires like Scott and his friends can hope to see their own taxes go down a tiny bit.

Doing his best imitation of Newt Gingrich, Scott has rolled out his 11-point-plan to soak the American middle class, lock down elections, destroy consumer protections, increase pollution and climate change, and squeeze a few more dollars out of every family, no matter how tight their budgets may already be.

Scott calls that “rescuing America.” And it may be true, if you’re morbidly rich and made your money spewing pollution or hustling opioids.
His plan not only calls for a 50 percent cut in the IRS workforce, presumably to end all audits of rich people like Scott, but also demands all federal legislation to “sunset” within five years. That would almost certainly end Social Security and Medicare, programs that have been in the crosshairs of Republicans since Reagan’s day.
Don't mourn, organize.

@Caltrek

How would they be able to pass that and survive another election? Wouldn't that be hugely unpopular once people realized what that means or experienced it for a few years? Just curious.

Even younger people and the middle class would start to have problems with it when it affected elderly family members or poorer family members to the point where they became a financial liability on their end. It's not like America is as family-oriented as it used to be.

Good question. I suppose it is a little like asking how the Republican party could survive after a Republican president is impeached for threatening to hold up arms shipments by way of blackmailing a foreign leader into producing a little dirt on a political opponent? Or how could that same political leader remain popular in in Republican ranks after more or less inciting a riot as part of an effort to overturn election results?

Unfortunately, what counts to an inordinate extent in electoral politics in this country is: how much money can you raise from the moneyed elite? Once you have that war chest in hand, then you have the resources to sell the American public all manner of nonsense.

On top of which, your question suggests that we will still have a functioning democracy after the election of such a wing-nut. Clearly, part of the Republican game plan is to arrive at a point where such things as the votes of anybody not supporting their program are simply ignored to the point of literally not being counted. Evidently, there is a substantial number of rank and file Republicans who have no problem with that game plan. Anything to be sure that conservatives "own" the liberals, not to mention fighting off socialism, etc.

Mind you, in a very important sense, you are on the right track. To understand the absurdity of their position and the negative impact of their proposed policies on the vast majority of the electorate. Let us hope there are enough people willing and able to do that come election time. Not just in 2024, but also in 2022 when voters will decide who to support: followers of the Big Lie (that the 2020 election was stolen), or those who still believe in the principles of one person one vote democratic procedures.

I feel like if they did those things, homeless encampments and crime would go through the roof. How do you think they would deal with that? What if a group of 65 plus-year-olds (who resembled their own grandparents) wore signs on their necks saying this country doesn't care about the elderly then they all shot themselves? Do you think that would get their attention? If that doesn't, then they are well and truly lost. Sorry for the graphic description. I was trying to think of the worst possible thing to get their attention that they would possibly care about if they are still human. This would be after several years of enacting their policies, of course. Not just for no reason.

As an aside, the way the one guy said: "skin in the game" just reminded me of a guy fresh out of college coming from a fraternity. I wonder how much of our country is run by fraternities and sororities? I find it hilarious that billionaires don't think poor people have "skin in the game." They probably couldn't survive in the harsher poor environments for very long (most of them).

Trump Confirms Mike Pence Won't Be His Running Mate If He Runs In 2024
Source: Huff Post

If Donald Trump runs for president in 2024, it won’t be with Mike Pence as his running mate.

The former president confirmed this least surprising of all campaign rumors to the Washington Examiner in a Tuesday interview.

“I don’t think the people would accept it,” Trump said. “Mike and I had a great relationship except for the very important factor that took place at the end.”

That “very important factor,” you may recall, is that Pence wouldn’t contest the 2020 election results during the congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.

They would deal with homeless encampments and crime the same way they deal with such problems now.

To be fair, some of the one-percenters do respond with donations to churches and charity to address the most severe aspect of bad policies. There are even a few who support relatively progressive political policies. Even within Republican ranks, there are those who don't want to go as far as eliminating social security. As the campaign for the 2024 election progresses, we will see more of how far the reactionaries go in insisting we dial back to pre-New Deal days, and how much support they get for these extremist positions.

RNC withdraws from Commission on Presidential Debates
Source: axios
The Republican National Committee voted unanimously Thursday in favor of withdrawing from the Commission on Presidential Debates. "The Commission on Presidential Debates is biased and has refused to enact simple and commonsense reforms to help ensure fair debates including hosting debates before voting begins and selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage," RNC chair Ronna McDaniel said in a press release.

"Today, the RNC voted to withdraw from the biased CPD, and we are going to find newer, better debate platforms to ensure that future nominees are not forced to go through the biased CPD in order to make their case to the American people," she added. "Debates are an important part of the democratic process, and the RNC is committed to free and fair debates."

The Republican Party for nearly a decade has complained that the nonprofit debate commission — which has described itself as nonpartisan — has favored Democrats, according to the New York Times. Last year, McDaniel warned CPD that the RNC would advise future Republican candidates against participating in CPD-hosted debates unless "significant reforms" were made. In January, the RNC reiterated their position by sending a letter to the CPD threatening to block future GOP presidential nominees from sanctioned debates if "meaningful reforms" are not made.

I wish 2024 U.S.A. presidential candidates read this before running: https://atom.singularity2050.com/
Global economy doubles in product every 15-20 years. Computer performance at a constant price doubles nowadays every 4 years on average. Livestock-as-food will globally stop being a thing by ~2050 (precision fermentation and more). Human stupidity, pride and depravity are the biggest problems of our world.
