Emerson College Polling: Trump Holds Edge Over Biden in Seven Key Swing State Polls

New Emerson College Polling/The Hill swing state polls find President Biden trailing former President Trump in the states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin; the differences are within each survey’s margin of error.

When third-party candidates are included on the ballot, support is pulled away from Biden more than Trump in five states: Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Support is drawn evenly from each candidate in Arizona and Michigan.

RFK Jr. Qualifies for California Ballot

Introduction

(The Hill) Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has qualified for the ballot in California, his campaign announced Monday.

Kennedy, alongside running mate Nicole Shanahan, was backed by the American Independent Party (AIP) of California, the state with the most electoral college votes in the country. The campaign confirmed it filed paperwork with California’s secretary of state on Monday.

In a five-minute video announcement, Kennedy noted that “ironically” the AIP was initially the party of segregationist and former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, but it “had its own rebirth.”

“It’s been reborn as a party that represents not bigotry and hatred, but rather compassion and unity and idealism and common sense,” Kennedy said.

“When they learned about my candidacy, they had just drafted a new charter for their reborn party where they could use their battle line for good for helping independent candidates to unite America without being blocked by the two-party duopoly.”

caltrek’s comment: Please forgive me if I seem to give an inordinate amount of attention to the RFK Jr. candidacy. It is just that I have always found third party politics an interesting topic. They may not be able to produce candidates that have a chance of winning, but they can influence the outcome of an election as well as encourage one and/or both of the main parties to take on new directions. These new directions may be for the good, or they may be for the bad. Either way, third parties can be a sign of things to come.

The American Independent Party has been a long-standing ultra-conservative party in California with no success at the statewide level and no success that I know of at local level politics. The party has managed to preserve ballot access at the statewide level for quite a few decades. This move to the center that RFK Jr. describes is an interesting development.

California is so overwhelmingly Democratic that there is no chance of this development affecting the outcome of the 2024 race in this state.

Donald Trump Will Speak at the Libertarian Convention.

(Mother Jones) On Wednesday, the Libertarian Party revealed a special guest speaker at its convention in late May. Surprise! It’s former President Donald Trump.

“This momentous occasion will mark the first time a former President directly addresses our members, candidates, and executive committee,” the party announced. “Don’t miss this opportunity to hear insights from a prominent figure in American politics and watch him engage with Libertarian ideals.”

That wasn’t all. A version of the page that has since been taken down invited members to shop from what it called “‘The Don’ Collection”—an assemblage of t-shirts featuring Trump’s hairdo over a range of favored LP issues, like freeing Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht from federal prison. For a $10 donation, you can even “cast your vote on the topics President Trump will address during his time at the podium.”

How did Donald Trump, an authoritarian Republican whose lawyers recently argued that the president can assassinate anyone he wants without being prosecuted, end up with a save-the-date for a libertarian conference? The simple answer is that the party invited both Trump and Biden to the event and Trump was the only one who said yes. (Third-party candidates Robert Kennedy Jr., Jill Stein, and Cornel West all previously appeared at the California Libertarian Party convention in February.) But the relationship between Trump and the current incarnation of the LP goes a bit deeper than that. As I reported in a recent story for the magazine, the party is in the midst of one of its semi-regular civil wars:

• Under the auspices of expanding the tent, some within the LP—and a fair number outside of it—began clamoring for a different kind of party: more aggressive, more offensive, and more right-wing. They weren’t interested in third-place showings; it wasn’t entirely clear if they were interested in competing at all. What’s followed has been more than seven years of spectacularly messy infighting. New Hampshire was only one front of many. Across the country the Libertarian Party has been plagued by breakaway factions, leaked chatrooms and conspiracy theories, and bitter struggles over bank accounts and social media handles.

Biden campaign slams Trump's latest unwillingness to accept results of 2024 election

President Joe Biden's campaign on Thursday attacked former President Donald Trump after Trump doubled down on saying that he wouldn't commit to accepting the results of the upcoming presidential election.

"If everything's honest, I'll gladly accept the results. I don't change on that," Trump said in an interview on Wednesday with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "If it's not, you have to fight for the right of the country." Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, did go on to say he anticipates the 2024 election will be "honest."

In response to Trump's comments, the Biden campaign released a statement accusing Trump of being a "danger to the Constitution and a threat to our democracy." "President Biden has said, 'You can't love your country only when you win.' But for Donald Trump, his campaign for revenge and retribution reigns supreme," Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer said in a statement.

Asked on Thursday afternoon by ABC News' Karen Travers if he were worried that Trump wouldn't accept the election results, Biden said "listen to what he says."
