Supporters of Brazilian far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro have stormed Congress in the capital.

The dramatic scenes came a week after left-wing veteran Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's inauguration.

Supporters of Mr Bolsonaro - who refuse to accept that he lost the election - broke through barriers and entered the building in Brasília.

Police used tear gas but failed to repel the demonstrators, some of which smashed windows.

It is unclear if they are still in the building.

Did they seriously storm empty government buildings on a Sunday?

Did they actually attempt an even dumber coup than January 6?!
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

Again... why are security services unaware of these things?

Pretty sure this has been widely telegraphed for a long time...

There's a reason all these things are happening...

Btw just now the supreme court (once more overstepping and doubling down on the crisis) has suspended for 90 days the mandate of the governor of Brasilia. This won't lead to good things, but let's see. I am thousands of kilometers from the mess and joying the show.
And, as always, bye bye.

Bolsonaro has been holed up thousands of miles away in Florida.
Source: New York Times
Before departing Brazil, the former president had urged his supporters to avoid violence.

When his supporters stormed Brazil’s Congress and presidential offices on Sunday to protest what they falsely claim was a stolen election, Jair Bolsonaro was believed to be thousands of miles away.

Facing various investigations from his time in office, Mr. Bolsonaro flew to Florida in late December with plans to stay for at least a month. He has been in Orlando, living in a rented house owned by a professional mixed-martial-arts fighter a few miles from Disney World.

Mr. Bolsonaro has long questioned the reliability of Brazil’s election systems — without evidence — and he refused to concede unequivocally when he lost in October to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who took office on Jan. 1.

Brazilian security forces retake control of government buildings
Source: Washington Post
Brazilian authorities had regained control of the three government buildings by Sunday evening, hours after thousands of radical supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed and vandalized the Congress, Supreme Court and Planalto Palace in the capital Brasilia. It was one of the worst attacks against democracy in Brazil in recent history.

By 5 p.m. local time, security forces and riot police managed to retake the Supreme Court, but some protesters remained in the parking garage, a court spokeswoman said.

“We still do not have a clear balance of the damage,” the spokeswoman told The Washington Post.

“Brazil is living a sad and regrettable page in its history, fruit of the nonconformity of those who refuse to accept democracy,” the court said in a later news release. “Security agents are safeguarding the safety of the ministers of the court who are following the episode with immense worry.”

The idiots who took part will have been caught on video. They will be identified, one by one, and jailed like their U.S. counterparts.
