First 7 jurors seated in Trump trial as judge warns former president about comments

Seven Manhattan residents were selected to serve on the jury in former President Donald Trump's criminal trial on Tuesday, as lawyers for both sides clashed over which potential jurors should be seated and the judge warned the defendant to remain quiet.

During the selection process, the anonymous members of the jury were known only by letters and numbers, like B400 and B280. There are four men and three women, ranging from young to middle-aged. They include a salesman, a nurse, two lawyers, an IT consultant, a teacher and a software engineer. Three grew up elsewhere, in Ireland, Oregon and Puerto Rico.

They all answered questions about their background and their opinion of Trump before they were chosen to serve on the jury for one of the highest-profile trials in American history. One member, the nurse, said she "[doesn't] really have" an opinion of the former president. She promised that she is "here for my civic duty" and "to listen to the facts." The IT consultant said, "My family is my hobby," and admitted to finding Trump "fascinating and mysterious."

The teacher said she has friends with strong opinions of Trump, but added that she's not very interested in politics or the news. "President Trump speaks his mind, and I'd rather that than someone who's in office who you don't know what they're thinking," she said. She was not aware that Trump faces criminal charges in other cases.

While I can see the wisdom in giving Trump repeated warnings accompanied by escalating financial fines, I suspect that the only thing that is going to shut him up is to put him in jail and closely monitor his communication with the outside world to edit comments that violate the gag orders. His followers may not be happy with that outcome, but they have not been particularly rational concerning Trump and therefore should be ignored.

It should be understood that such gag orders are needed to protect the deliberative process from undue influence by Trump and his cult followers. That includes protecting jurors and other courtroom participants from intimidation.
Don't mourn, organize.

Man who set himself on fire outside Trump trial identified as ‘researcher’ who posted conspiracy-laden manifesto moments earlier
2 minutes ago

The man who set himself on fire outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump’s trial is under way has now been identified as a self-described “investigative researcher” who posted a conspiracy-laden manifesto online moments before the incident.

Maxwell Azzarello, a 37-year-old man from Florida, shared a string of conspiracy theories on his social media accounts in recent months, in which he railed against the rich and powerful and claimed “our only goal is to abolish our criminal government”.

On Friday afternoon, mere minutes after the final jurors were selected in the former president’s criminal case, Mr Azzarello self-immolated outside the court.

He is now at Manhattan’s Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center in critical condition, police said.

Three NYPD officers and one court officer sustained minor injuries from the fire but are in stable condition, authorities told reporters.
