Former Trump aide Navarro ordered to report to US prison this month

Source: Reuters

March 11, 2024 11:04 AM EDT
WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defense team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress last September for refusing to turn over documents or sit for an interview with the Democratic-led House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. He was sentenced in January.

Somebody else has noticed the essentially reactionary nature of Trump. Reactionary in the sense of wishing for a return to monarchy:

King Donald – How Trump Could Become Royalty
March 12, 2024

Introduction:
(Eurekalert) A Cambridge Festival talk will examine the role of monarchies across the world and show how republics and their systems can sometimes morph into them – with a particular focus on the forthcoming United States Presidential election.

The talk, ‘Monarchy in the Modern Age’ will be delivered by historian Dr Sean Lang of Anglia Ruskin University. As part of it, Dr Lang will suggest that Trumpism appears to be an attempt to transform the United States from a democratic presidential system into a monarchy.

Dr Lang, Senior Lecturer in History at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), said: “Even in democratic republics, monarchy can seem tempting. Donald Trump’s style of government, and his steadfast refusal to accept the clear verdict of the electorate in 2020, suggests he sees himself as something much closer to an anointed king, who cannot lawfully be overthrown, than a democratic leader holding power at the wish of the electorate.

“The United States Constitution was drawn up to guard the United States against becoming a monarchy on the model of European kingdoms, but it is not the failsafe protection people often assume. For a democratic republic, the politics of the US has been remarkably dominated in recent history by a handful of wealthy families – the Kennedys, Clintons, Bushs and now the Trumps.

“Monarchy is not really about crowns or pageantry; it is about power. And republics are every bit as vulnerable to monarchical rule as actual monarchies.”

In addition to further discussion on the theme as Trump as a potentially emerging monarch, there is also discussion of the British monarchy.

Trump can't secure $454 million appeal bond in New York fraud case, his lawyers say

Published Mon, Mar 18 2024 10:26 AM EDT Updated 1 Min Ago

Donald Trump cannot obtain a bond to secure the $454 million civil business fraud judgment against him as he pursues an appeal of the case, his attorneys said in a New York court filing Monday. Attorneys for Trump and his co-defendants the fraud case argued that it was “impossible” for them to secure a complete appeal bond, which would “effectively” require “cash reserves approaching $1 billion.”

“Defendants’ ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is “a practical impossibility,” the lawyers wrote, quoting an affidavit in the filing with the Appellate Division of Manhattan Supreme Court.

They said they have approached roughly 30 surety companies through four separate brokers, and that they have spent “countless hours negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies in the world.”

The lawyers said that if the appellate division considers denying the requested stay of the judgment, it should schedule oral arguments on the issue. And if the division declines to grant the stay, the lawyers asked that it allow them to file an appeal with the Court of Appeals, the highest state court in New York.

Trump flagged as 'massive security risk' after he's unable to post bond in fraud judgment

“The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds $464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

That cash crunch made the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a national security risk, according to Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL)....................................

"The fact that we don't know this about someone running for the highest office in the land shifts the liability onto our democracy itself," Casten said. "If the @HouseGOP (and in particular, the leadership of the Judiciary Committee) gave a damn about our democracy they would be issuing subpoenas for this instead of their onanistic Hunter [Biden] fetish. The fact that they aren't tells you what they think about democracy too.

"And yes, there is a massive problem that the Senate isn't doing this either," he added. "That problem rhymes with shmilibuster."
