Chris Christie Assesses Trump's Potential Second Indictment: 'These are all Self-inflicted Wounds'
June 8, 2023

Introduction:
(Fox News) Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) joined "Fox & Friends" Thursday to discuss his decision to run for president and explain why he believes the legal troubles faced by former President Trump are "self-inflicted wounds." The former federal prosecutor reacted to Trump potentially facing a second indictment over his mishandling of classified documents.

CHRIS CHRISTIE: The problem with all of this is that it's self-inflicted. In the end, I don't know that the government even knew that Joe Biden had those documents or not. They did know Donald Trump did and in fact asked voluntarily for them for over a year and a quarter and got them back in dribs and drabs. And at least if you believe the accounts that you're reading right now and I and I take them with a grain of salt because I did this work for seven years and I know you can't believe anything until an indictment comes out. But if in fact, you're keeping those things knowingly, even after the government has asked for you to bring them back, the excuses about, ‘oh, they were classified, declassified automatically when I left the office,’ well, that's just wrong.
]
I know that as a legal matter. And the problem with this is let's go to pull it back for a second. It's a bigger problem whether he's indicted or not, because these are all self-inflicted wounds. Return the documents and stop doing this. Why do you have to be the center of negative attention all the time? Why do you have to be angry all the time? And that's what Donald Trump has done. So I'll wait to see you make a judgment on the indictment if and when one comes. But certainly, as you know, on the Alvin Bragg stuff I said at the time, that's a ridiculous indictment and one that I would have never brought as a prosecutor but it doesn't mean that the next one of the next one are not going to be problematic. And by the way, that's weight that Donald Trump will have to carry if he's the nominee into a general election in November. And why do we want to take that risk?

caltrek’s comment: This was from an interview on Fox News, a favorite media outlet for conservatives. With a long campaign season ahead and Christie willing to come out swinging one wonders if Trump’s polling lead for the nomination will hold up. My guess is that it will, that Trump’s followers at this point are so much of a cult that they will just ignore Christie and other primary candidates that say things critical of Trump. Still, comments of this type may very well soften Trump up for the general election. That, along with a continued stream of news concerning indictments and other legal problems. Also, Christie’s argument about “weight that Donald Trump will carry…why do we want to take that risk?” does seem to be having an effect on some Republican voters. So, when it comes time to vote in the primaries, who knows what the decision of Republican voters will be?
Don't mourn, organize.

Trump aide Walt Nauta indicted in classified documents case
Source: CNN Politics

CNN — An aide to former President Donald Trump has been indicted in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the mishandling of classified documents from the Trump White House, two sources familiar with the indictment tell CNN. Walt Nauta’s indictment is the second in the special counsel’s investigation after Trump was indicted on seven counts on Thursday.

An attorney for Nauta declined to comment. Nauta was with Trump at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club this week. The specific charges against Nauta have not been revealed. Trump responded to Nauta’s indictment on his social media Friday, writing, “They are trying to destroy his life, like the lives of so many others, hoping that he will say bad things about ‘Trump.’ He is strong, brave, and a Great Patriot. The FBI and DOJ are CORRUPT!”

Nauta’s involvement in the movement of boxes of classified material at Trump’s Florida resort had been a subject of scrutiny of investigators. Nauta, with the help of a maintenance worker at Mar-a-Lago, moved the boxes before the FBI executed a search warrant on the Palm Beach property last August.

According to court filings last year, the FBI found more than 100 documents marked as classified during the search, which took place weeks after a Trump lawyer signed a statement attesting that the Trump team had complied with a May subpoena seeking production of all documents with classified markings.

Trump charged with 37 counts in classified documents case, indictment says
Source: CNBC

The criminal indictment against Donald Trump over his handling of classified government records was unsealed Friday.

The 37-count indictment was made public a day after the former president was charged in the case in U.S. District Court in Miami.

Among other allegations, the indictment says Trump showed classified documents to other people in 2021, after leaving office. Trump is due to be arraigned in Miami on Tuesday, the day before his 77th birthday.

Thirty-one of the counts accuse Trump of willful retention of national defense information. He is also charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice; withholding a document or record; corruptly concealing a document or record; concealing a document in a federal investigation; scheme to conceal; and false statements and representations

Two lawyers who represented Donald Trump in the months before the former president was indicted on federal charges over his handling of classified documents quit working for him Friday morning.

Trusty and Rowley also said they will no longer represent Trump in a pending federal criminal probe into his efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. Trusty had made multiple appearances on television news shows Thursday evening and Friday morning to discuss the indictment of Trump as his lawyer.

Trump is definitely a goner. Special Counsel Smith wouldn't convene a grand jury to indict Trump if he wasn't sure the evidence he gathered would be sufficient.
To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.
