With the Knesset set to disband on Wednesday, what happens next?

With the ideological ties that bound Israel’s big-tent coalition having frayed, the 24th Knesset is set to dissolve itself by midnight on Wednesday, just over a year after being sworn in.

After that happens, three big changes will take place: Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will succeed Prime Minister Naftali Bennett as premier on Thursday; Israel will go to its fifth elections since 2019 in the fall; and Knesset will cease to function, with the government shifting into caretaker status.

The political shake-up comes in the wake of Bennett and Lapid’s dramatic June 20 announcement that they would draw the curtains on their own government. Since losing its one-seat parliamentary majority in April, the shaky coalition had been unable to stabilize.

Bennett said on Saturday that the imminent threat of a successful opposition-led bid to disperse the Knesset, coupled with the June 30 deadline for averting a potentially chaotic legal situation in the West Bank, was the immediate catalyst for his decision to close up shop.

While the coalition hopes to finalize the Knesset’s dispersal by Wednesday evening, it still has several outstanding arguments with the opposition. Most significantly, the sides are bickering over when to schedule the elections, with their preferred dates one week apart.

Israel's parliament dissolves, sets 5th election in 4 years
Source: AP
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s parliament voted Thursday to dissolve itself and send the country to the polls in November for the fifth time in less than four years.

Yair Lapid, Israel’s foreign minister and architect of the outgoing coalition government, will become the country’s caretaker prime minister just after midnight on Friday. He will be the 14th person to hold that office, taking over from Naftali Bennett, Israel’s shortest serving prime minister.

The government collapsed just over a year after it was formed in a historic move that saw longtime leader Benjamin Netanyahu ousted after 12 years in power by a coalition of ideologically diverse parties, the first to include an Arab faction. The motion to dissolve passed with 92 lawmakers in favor, and none opposing, after days of bickering by coalition and opposition lawmakers over the date of new elections and other last minute legislation.

New elections will be held on November 1.The move brings a formal end to a political experiment in which eight parties from across the Israeli spectrum tried to find common ground after a period of prolonged gridlock in which the country held four elections in two years.

Israeli Fire Likely Killed Shireen Abu Akleh, but Test of Bullet Inconclusive
by Barak Ravid
July 4, 2022

Introduction:
(Axios) The Biden administration said Monday that Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by unintentional Israeli fire, but the results of the ballistics test of the bullet removed from her body were inconclusive.

The big picture: The results of the ballistics test could have a negative effect on President Biden’s planned visit to the West Bank on July 15. The Palestinian Authority agreed to give the bullet to the U.S. expecting that the test would conclude Abu Akleh was shot by Israeli soldiers.

• The Biden administration has faced increased pressure from Democrats in Congress to take a more active role in the investigation.

Netanyahu holds lead to win election, as almost all of votes counted
Source: Jerusalem Post

Former prime minister and Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to become Israel's next prime minister, according to the counting of almost all of the ballots. By Wednesday afternoon, Netanyahu held his lead with more than 80 percent of the votes counted across the country.

Arab party Balad was originally said to be close to crossing the threshold but by Wednesday afternoon that option seemed to dissipate. Had it happened, Netanyahu's bloc would have potentially dropped to 60 seats, one short of a coalition majority. Likud had sent an urgent letter to the police commissioner on Tuesday night demanding that allegations of voter fraud in the Arab sector be immediately investigated.

According to the exit polls on Tuesday night, Netanyahu's bloc, which includes Likud, Religious Zionist Party (RZP), United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Shas, crossed the 61-seat threshold and will be able to form the next coalition.

Israel will go through its own transformation but first it seems, at least, it may go right wing.

Netanyahu has declared the below as official policy.

Judea and Samaria are the West Bank.

Folk get understandably touchy when one mentions "apartheid" (let alone "ethnic cleansing") in context of Israel. But there are *existing* Palestinian Arabs. If "the Jewish people" have exclusive (and unquestionable!) right to ALL the land, where do non-Jews go? 3rd class citizens? Increasingly smaller, more marginal plots of land? Expulsion to another country? Worse? Via Dave Hill on Mastodon

Major Israeli Supreme Court ruling rocks Netanyahu's coalition
Source: Axios
The Israeli Supreme Court in a 10-1 ruling revoked the appointment of Aryeh Deri, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party and a key ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as a senior minister in the government.

Why it matters: The decision could dramatically escalate the constitutional crisis in Israel and accelerate the government’s effort to push forward its plan for weakening Israel’s judicial system.

It could also create a political crisis that would likely destabilize the coalition.

Catch up quick: Deri, one of Israel’s most powerful politicians, has been convicted of criminal offenses twice, including last year, when he agreed to a plea bargain in which he admitted to tax offenses.

Israel sees one of its biggest-ever protests

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis rallied against the government's judicial plans on Saturday night, in what organisers said were the biggest street protests in Israel's history.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the changes - which would curb the power of courts - will restore balance between the branches of government.

Opponents say they threaten democracy.

At one of Saturday's rallies, opposition leader Yair Lapid said this was Israel's "greatest crisis".

[...]

On Saturday, protest organisers said as many as 500,000 demonstrators took to the streets across Israel for the 10th consecutive week, in what the Haaretz newspaper called "the largest demonstration in the country's history".
