Armenia votes in neck-and-neck parliamentary election

June 20, 2021

Armenians were voting in a parliamentary election on Sunday, with opinion polls putting the party of acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and that of former President Robert Kocharyan neck-and-neck.

The Armenian government called the snap election to try to end a political crisis that erupted after ethnic Armenian forces lost a six-week war against Azerbaijan last year and ceded territory in and around the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Pashinyan has been under pressure ever since, with regular street protests demanding he step down over the terms of the peace agreement that ended the conflict. Under the deal, which was brokered by Russia, Azerbaijan regained control of territory it had lost during a war in the early 1990s.

Pashinyan himself described the agreement as a disaster, but said he had been compelled to sign it in order to prevent greater human and territorial losses.

According to a recent Gallup International poll conducted on June 7-10, 24.1% of voters were ready to vote for Kocharyan's Armenia Alliance and 23.8% for Pashinyan's Civil Contract party.

LIVE: Deadly border clashes erupt between Armenia, Azerbaijan

13 Sep 2022
  • Armenia says at least 49 of its soldiers have been killed in fighting along the country’s border with Azerbaijan.
  • Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accuses Azerbaijan of attacking Armenian towns because of a simmering dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, hostilities erupted minutes after midnight on Tuesday, with Azerbaijani forces unleashing an artillery barrage and drone attacks in many sections of Armenian territory.

Azerbaijan, for its part, charged that its forces had returned fire in response to “large-scale provocations” by the Armenian military, claiming that the Armenian troops had repeatedly fired on Azerbaijani military positions after planting mines and building up stocks of weapons along the border.

Azerbaijan also accused Armenia of having carried out intelligence activity along the border.

Armenia says 105 troops killed in Azerbaijan border clashes

More than 100 Armenian soldiers have been killed in border clashes with Azerbaijan since Monday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said.

Azerbaijan said on Thursday that 71 of its troops had been killed, in fighting which both sides blame on the other.

It is the latest in a series of long-running conflicts fought between the two former Soviet republics over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Russia and the US have each called for peace between the two countries.

Speaking to his country's parliament, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said 105 Armenian servicemen had been killed since Monday night in attacks he blamed on Azerbaijan.

He also accused Azeri troops of occupying 10 sq km (4 sq miles) of Armenian territory this week and said he had now turned to Russia for military assistance - a long-time ally of Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh: Almost 30,000 refugees have fled to Armenia

Nearly 30,000 ethnic Armenians have fled Nagorno-Karabakh - a quarter of the population of the enclave which Azerbaijan seized last week.

Hundreds of cars are backed up on the one road leading into Armenia, the destination of those leaving.

Azerbaijan says residents will be safe, but Armenia's prime minister says "ethnic cleansing" has started.

Nagorno-Karabakh - recognised as part of Azerbaijan - had been run by ethnic Armenians for three decades.

The mountainous region in the South Caucasus has been supported by Armenia - but also by its ally, Russia.

Nagorno-Karabakh’s breakaway government says it will dissolve itself
Thu 28 Sep 2023 12.23 CEST

The breakaway government of Nagorno-Karabakh has announced it will dissolve itself and that the unrecognised republic will cease to exist by 2024, formally ending more than 30 years of separatist rule.

The president of Armenia’s self-declared Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree to dissolve all state institutions by 1 January 2024, Karabakh Armenian authorities said in a statement. The republic would cease to exist from that day, the decree said.

More than half of Nagorno-Karabakh’s population has fled to Armenia in what the country has described as “ethnic cleansing” after a 24-hour blitz last week by Azerbaijan to reclaim full control over the breakaway region.

The decree also said the local population must “familiarise themselves with the conditions of reintegration presented by the Republic of Azerbaijan” and make “an independent and individual decision” on whether to stay or leave the region.

The assault by Azerbaijan’s army forced local authorities to agree to lay down weapons and start talks on Nagorno-Karabakh’s “reintegration” into Azerbaijan.
