Meta Platforms could face an unprecedented $1.4 trillion in penalties after four states accused the tech giant of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram to addict young users while misleading the public about the platforms' safety.

The eye-watering figure was disclosed by Meta itself in a recent court filing responding to attorneys general's proposed penalty calculations. The total is close to the company's roughly $1.5 trillion market value.

The disclosure comes ahead of a pivotal trial beginning in August in Oakland, California. California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey allege Meta violated state consumer protection laws by creating addictive products for children and teens.

The eu is disgusting. Trying to end social media and treating its people like they're 5 years old. I guess any form of enjoyment in this life is somehow to be made illegal. I am serious when I predict that they're heading for another dark age. Their hatred of tech, science and of thought is scary as f*ck. This is the opposite of places like China, Japan and Korea that are very open about new ideas and tech. I suspect those places will look very much like the future in the decades to come, while europe probably bans the internet and demands everyone back into the fields.

One not suppose to enjoy life? Oh'yeah, I guess you better slave in your pointless job all day and don't you dare surf that internet. Sounds like a dictatorship from hell.

I really don't see how the eu advances into a federal like state until it stops with this mindset. It simply will never gain the support of the people as long as it fights them. Growth comes with respect. I'd stop by acting like north korea and maybe just maybe start respect your people if you want to be granted more power?

It is time to fine the f*ck out of wage slavery as it is bad for humans.

-Hunger
-fear
-Fear of not being able to pay for basic healthcare
-Unimaginable suffering


People should be able to enjoy the internet,social media, ice cream and enjoyment in this life(porn on their computer, wearing what they wish to wear and more). To be against such is insanity.

This would've been better if it was chosen instead of the broader social media ban, not on top of it. This way, companies would not be able to dodge liability for subjecting youth to harm. (Oh, they're not allowed on our platform anyway; not our problem! Nothing to see here!)

Also noteworthy:

"If it's a curfew on companies using push notifications to wake someone up in the night, absolutely have a curfew," Prof Livingstone told the BBC.

"But if it's a curfew that prevents a child in need of support or help or comfort reaching out to trusted sources in the middle of the night, I think that's quite harmful potentially."

At least it's good to hear that they don't plan to ban VPNs just yet
