UK greenhouse gas emissions fell 3% in 2024, latest figures show

The UK’s climate-warming pollution fell 3% in 2024, the latest Government figures show.

The final tally for 2024 shows greenhouse gas emissions were down 3% on 2023, and were also 53% below the baseline year of 1990 – even as the economy grew 80% over that time.

The biggest fall in emissions was from electricity supplies, as a result of higher electricity imports, more generation from renewables and the closure of the UK’s last coal-fired power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

Italy calls for suspension of carbon price in major attack on EU climate policy

The call would allow businesses to pollute for free, undermining the bloc’s longstanding emissions trading scheme.

February 26, 2026 3:56 pm CET

ROME — The Italian government wants the European Union to hit pause on its flagship climate law, the 20-year-old Emissions Trading System, in the latest in a flurry of attacks on the bloc's efforts to slow global warming.

Italy had already announced plans to subsidize power companies in a way that would undermine the core idea of the ETS: Making polluters pay for their planet-warming emissions. But on Thursday it went further, demanding Brussels suspend the mechanism entirely ahead of a broader review of the policy later this year.

"The ETS mechanism, as currently designed, is nothing more than a tax, a levy on energy-intensive companies," Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso told reporters upon arriving at Thursday’s meeting of economy and industry ministers in Brussels.

"It is necessary to revise it substantially … To do this properly, the ETS mechanism must be suspended pending a reform," he added.

It was an extraordinary attack on the EU's most powerful weapon for tackling climate change, and suggests the consensus that has made the bloc among the world’s most climate-friendly jurisdictions is fraying.

Analysis: UK emissions fall 2.4% in 2025 as coal hits 400-year low

5 March 2026

The UK’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.4% in 2025 to their lowest level in more than 150 years, according to new Carbon Brief analysis.

The biggest factors were gas use falling to a 34-year low and coal use dropping to levels last seen in 1600, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne and William Shakespeare was writing Hamlet.

These shifts were helped by record-high UK temperatures, elevated gas prices, the end of coal power in late 2024 and a sharp slowdown in the steel industry.

[...]

The 2.4% (8.9MtCO2e) fall in emissions in 2025 was only slightly more than half of the 15MtCO2e cut needed each year on average until 2050, to reach the UK’s legally binding net-zero target.

[...]

Apart from brief rebounds after the global financial crisis and the Covid-19 lockdowns, UK emissions have fallen every year for the past two decades.
