Plate boundaries may experience higher temperature and stress than previously thought
https://phys.org/news/2024-02-plate-bou ... tress.html
by Aaron Sidder, Eos
Temperature and shear stress are two influential variables that affect faulting and seismicity in subduction zones, where tectonic plates converge. Yet because earthquakes originate tens of kilometers below Earth's surface at plate boundaries, the effects of temperature and the magnitude of stress are poorly understood and hotly debated.

Philip England and colleagues explored these variables at the plate boundary in northern Honshu, Japan's largest island and the setting of the devastating Tōhoku earthquake in 2011—the most powerful ever recorded in Japan. The authors used a dense set of heat flux measurements collected from 100-meter-deep boreholes as a proxy for measurements at the inaccessible plate interface.

The findings are published in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.

Anthropocene unit of geological time is rejected
14 hours ago

Image

A proposal to codify a new geological epoch based on humanity's influence on Earth has been rejected.

It means "the Anthropocene" will not be added to the chronostratigraphic chart featured in textbooks and on classroom posters to record the major changes in Earth history.

The International Union of Geological Sciences upheld an earlier vote by a lower committee to dismiss the idea.

But it also recognised the term "Anthropocene" had common currency.

"Despite its rejection as a formal unit of the geologic timescale, the Anthropocene will nevertheless continue to be used not only by Earth and environmental scientists but also by social scientists, politicians and economists as well as by the public at large," the IUGS said.

4.0 Magnitude Aftershock Recorded in New Jersey
by Brandon Miller
April 5, 2024

Introduction:
(CNN) An aftershock of a preliminary magnitude 4.0 has struck just southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It happened at about 5:59 p.m. ET, USGS said.

The aftershock comes nearly 8 hours after the main shock of 4.8 magnitude this morning. There have been at least 10 aftershocks, though most were in the 1.8 to 2.2 magnitude range.

caltrek’s comment: The remarkable thing about this quake and its aftershock is not their size, modest by earthquake standards, but their location. An MSNBC report indicates that it had been 250 years since an earthquake of that magnitude or greater had hit that part of New Jersey where the recent earthquake was centered.

To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

Earthquakes are Among Our Deadliest Disasters. Scientists are Racing to Get Ahead of Them.
by Umair Irfan
June 10, 2024

Introduction:
(Vox) If you felt the ground starting to shake, would you know what you’re supposed to do?

You should. You might be more vulnerable to an earthquake than you realize: According to the US Geological Survey, almost 75 percent of the US population lives in an area that could experience a damaging quake.

Right now, we get scarily little notice before the ground below starts to tremble. Earthquakes create a potent threat even in places that are well prepared — and they’ve proven catastrophic in places that aren’t. One of the deadliest disasters of the 21st century is the January 12, 2010, 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, which killed more than 220,000 people, with some estimates topping 300,000. Another is the magnitude 9.1 earthquake and ensuing tsunami on December 26, 2004, which claimed about 230,000 lives. As populations grow in seismically active areas, many more people will be at risk.

The World Meteorological Organization observed that between 1970 and 2019, the number of disasters, mostly related to weather, increased fivefold, but deaths fell by two-thirds. Even as climate change worsens downpours, floods, fires, and heat waves, improvements in weather forecasting, longer lead times for warnings, more resilient infrastructure, and better responses in the aftermath have continued to save more lives.

Yet for earthquakes, progress has been much slower. They’re a stubborn outlier in a decades-long downward trend in disaster fatalities, and recent events have shown just how deadly they can be.
