China to double battery storage by next year as renewables boom
Nov 5, 2025
China plans to double its battery storage capacity by next year, an ambitious goal that could have massive downstream impacts on the world’s renewable energy transition.
Beijing said it would invest $35 billion to build a “new energy storage system,” which would significantly expand China’s already world-leading capacity, the South China Morning Post reported.
The breakthroughs in battery efficiency and manufacturing capacity needed to reach the goal could lead to a surge in global exports: Batteries are a key component in the energy transition as most solar electricity is generated when demand is low.
According to the Global Battery Alliance, by 2030 batteries could account for 30% of the global emission reductions required in the transport and energy sectors.

Canada’s largest battery storage project breaks ground in Ontario
November 12, 2025
EDWARDSBURGH CARDINAL, ONT. — Construction is now underway on the single largest battery storage facility ever procured in Canadian history, the Ontario government reports.
Once complete, the new Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage System will provide enough capacity to power nearly 400,000 homes.
The $750 million project is a lithium-ion battery energy storage facility procured through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Long-Term 1 Request for Proposals.
It’s being developed in a partnership between Potentia Renewables Inc. and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation on a site of less than 30 acres of rural land, a release describes.
It will feature approximately 400 battery containers, which are each the size of a 20-foot shipping container.

Re: Batteries & Energy Storage news and discussions
U.S. battery fleet grows 59% with nearly 14 GW added in 12 months, says EIA
December 2, 2025
US battery energy storage capacity has expanded by 13,809 MW over the past year, a 59.4% annual growth rate, according to EIA data.
EIA data reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign confirms the storage sector surge experienced throughout 2024, where the battery capacity increased 66% in the calendar year, has continued deep into 2025.
While percentage growth off a smaller base means that storage is easily outpacing any other traditional generations, it was also second only to utility-scale solar in raw megawatts added, with solar capacity growing by an impressive 31,620 MW over the past year. In comparison, natural gas capacity added 3,417 MW, and nuclear added a neglible amount over the same period.
The EIA data suggests this trajectory will accelerate in the coming year. The administration projects developers will bring an additional 22,053 MW of battery capacity online over the next 12 months, with a map showing the additions with large concentrations of batteries noticeably clustering in Texas (ERCOT), California (CAISO), and more. While Arizona is showing good growth, California and Texas hold over 70% of the total national capacity combined.

Ford is Retreating from EVs — but Embracing Grid Batteries
By Julian Spector

December 17, 2025
Introduction:
Read more here: https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/b ... y-storage(Canary Media) Ford, a century after it launched the modern automotive era, has given up on its early ambitions to charge into the electrified future.
The company announced that it will delete nearly $20 billion in book value to extricate itself from its EV investments, an eye-popping loss that amounts to one of the biggest corporate impairments ever.
The company, of course, views it differently: The move is a “decisive redeployment of capital,” it said on Monday, as it rolled out a string of related strategic changes alongside the write-down.
The pivot hits particularly hard in the southeastern Battery Belt, where Ford had invested in multibillion-dollar BlueOval plants to produce batteries and electric vehicles. The EV battery facility in Glendale, Kentucky, will lay off about 1,600 employees, and local outlet the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that a Ford factory in Tennessee will hire around 1,000 fewer workers than previously planned, now that it is making gas trucks instead of electric ones.
As Ford retreats from EVs, though, it’s enthusiastically embracing battery-making — announcing plans to repurpose the Kentucky plant to fuel its entrance into the grid storage market. It expects to spend roughly $2 billion over the next two years to launch production of lithium iron phosphate cells and package them into 20-foot containers that hold at least 5 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, equivalent to a Tesla Megapack. The plan is to ship at least 20 gigawatt-hours annually by the end of 2027.
Don't mourn, organize.

World’s largest grid battery has been completed – in the oil capital of the world
Dec 22, 2025
The world’s biggest battery energy storage system – a 7.8 gigawatt-hour behemoth – has been completed in Saudi Arabia, and will now start the process of powering up.
China-based inverter and battery giant, Sungrow, said last week that construction of the huge big battery had been completed across three sites located in the southwestern regions of KSA, Najran, Khamis Mushait, and Madaya.
The project is owned by Saudi Electricity Co. and has an offtake deal with National Grid SA – a wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Saudi Electricity Co. Algihaz Holding was the project’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner.
A LinkedIn announcement from Ahmed Elbaz, head of BESS Execution at Algihaz, says construction of the project actually was completed around five months ago.
Sungrow says that it manufactured more than 1,500 PowerTitan 2.0 systems in just 58 days for the Saudi Electricity Company project, to help deliver it “within a very challenging timeline.”
The company says the PowerTitan 2.0 system has a “streamlined configuration” – including an all-in-one AC-DC block design and pre-assembled battery containers – that significantly reduces onsite installation time.

CATL confirms 2026 large-scale sodium-ion battery deployment in multiple sectors
Dec 28, 2025 5:03 PM CET
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) said at its supplier conference in Ningde, Fujian province, on December 28, 2025, that it plans to deploy its sodium-ion battery technology at scale across multiple sectors in 2026, according to IT-home. The company described expanded applications in battery swap systems, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and energy storage, indicating a significant commercial deployment phase for sodium-ion technology next year.
Chinese financial media, Sina, reported that at the supplier conference, CATL said its sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery technologies are expected to develop in parallel, describing this as a “dual-star” trend with broader deployment in 2026. Analysts said the global sodium-ion battery industry is shifting from early commercialization toward scaled deployment, with current market use concentrated in energy storage, low-range vehicles, and auxiliary systems, and anticipated expansion into passenger and commercial vehicles. Those reports noted that, in 2025, average sodium-ion cell prices remained significantly lower than those of lithium-ion equivalents, and industry forecasts project substantial growth in the sodium-ion market through 2030.
