Grid batteries reach stunning new peak of 44 pct of evening demand in world’s fourth biggest economy

Apr 1, 2026

The growing portfolio of grid-scale batteries in California, the world’s fourth biggest economy, hit a stunning new peak earlier this week, reaching a share of 44 pct of evening demand at once stage in the early evening.

According to data from Grid Status, the peak output of battery storage in California hit a new peak of 12,293 megawatts at 7pm local time on Sunday, March 29. That equated to 44 per cent of demand, its record tracker stated (that’s the big purple blog in the graph above).

As in most other grids with high levels of battery storage, the rollout has been rapid over the last five years. More than 90 per cent of California’s battery fleet has been built in the last five years, lifting total capacity to more than 17 GW from just 1.3 GW in 2020, according to Ember analyst Nicolas Fulghum.

This is another view on what happened on Sunday in California. Batteries charged heavily throughout the day, soaking up the excess solar, approaching charging rates of 10 GW at times. In the evening, most of the output was centred on the early evening peak, but batteries supplied a significant share throughout the evening.

The biggest loser in this transition has been gas, with the share of battery storage staying at high levels throughout the evening peak. On Sunday, it stayed above 20 per cent of grid demand for almost four hours.

Mini quantum battery charges a million times faster than it discharges
By Etiido Uko

What comes to mind when you imagine fast charging? Smartphones going from zero to 100% in minutes? Or perhaps, EVs gaining 60 miles worth of charge in under an hour? Scientists have created a proof-of-concept quantum battery that charges one million times faster than it discharges … using a laser.

For many years, the concept of a quantum battery, which uses the principles of quantum mechanics to store energy, has remained theoretical, largely due to the complexities and unpredictability of quantum technology.

In a significant leap forward for the field, a group of researchers comprising scientists from the Australian Space Agency, CSIRO, RMIT University, and the University of Melbourne has created the world’s first proof-of-concept quantum battery, charged wirelessly with a laser.

The new prototype, still very far from being practical, took femtoseconds (quadrillionths of a second) to charge and stored the energy for nanoseconds. Technically speaking, the battery lasted one million times longer than it took to charge. To put that into perspective, that's like a phone taking 30 minutes to charge fully and then lasting for over 100 years. Another illustration is an 11-day-lasting battery that charges in one second.

Turkey to race ahead of EU on battery storage amid fossil fuel crisis

More than 33GW of battery capacity approved for Turkish grid since 2022 compared with 12-13GW in Germany

Wed 8 Apr 2026

Turkey has given the green light to more batteries to buffer its electricity grid than any EU member state, a report has found, in a further sign of rich countries losing steam in the race to a clean economy.

More than 33GW of battery capacity have been approved in Turkey since 2022, according to the climate thinktank Ember, while the total planned and operational capacity in European frontrunners that started deploying them earlier, such as Germany and Italy, is 12-13GW.

The coal-hungry economy straddling Europe and Asia is among several developing countries witnessing a rapid boom in clean technology as prices fall and fossil fuels face further crises.

The findings come as diplomats prepare to descend on the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya in November, when Turkey hosts the Cop31 climate summit.

Ufuk Alparslan, an analyst at Ember and author of the report, said policy choices in Turkey had created a “massive investment signal” in battery storage that outstripped its European peers. “If delivered, Turkey’s battery pipeline will be the backbone of a new, clean regional energy hub.”

CATL secures world’s largest sodium-ion battery order with 60 GWh deal

Apr 27, 2026 1:31 PM

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and energy storage integrator HyperStrong have signed a strategic cooperation agreement for sodium-ion batteries, marking a milestone in the industrialisation of this emerging battery technology.

The two companies announced a three-year cooperation order for 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries on April 27, 2026, representing the world’s largest sodium-ion battery order to date and signalling a turning point in the commercialisation of sodium-ion technology.

According to CATL, as its first strategic partner for energy storage sodium batteries, HyperStrong will collaborate with the battery giant in technology research and development, product application, and project implementation.

According to the company, the collaboration demonstrates that CATL has overcome all challenges in the mass production chain of sodium-ion batteries and possesses large-scale delivery capabilities. Through morphological control and surface modification, it has improved the energy density of sodium-ion batteries.

In manufacturing processes, CATL has systematically resolved production issues such as foaming in hard carbon production lines and moisture control through core technologies, including angstrom-level pore size adjustment, surface molecular water locking, and adaptive dynamic formation processes, ensuring consistency in mass production.

As home battery numbers surge to new peaks, hardly anyone is installing just solar any more

May 1, 2026

The surge in home battery installations continues to defy all expectations, reaching more than 360,000 in the 10 months since the program was launched, and installation rates of more than 1,500 a day ahead of the rebate changes.

The new figures released by the federal government also comes as new data highlights that the greatest take-up of the federal battery rebate has been in regional and outer suburban areas, which have accounted for 77 per cent of installs.

And it also comes as the latest quarterly report from the Australian Energy Market Operator specifically credits home batteries – along with grid scale battery storage – for reducing demand in the evening peaks and lowering wholesale prices, which will eventually feed in to lower customer bills.

“More than 360,000 households have installed this capacity, cutting their power bills and helping drive down energy prices for everyone,” federal energy and climate minister Chris Bowen says.

“Australians are getting on with it. They know what’s good for the planet is good for their pocket.”
