Category 5 Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica

Source: Washington Post

October 28, 2025 at 1:16 p.m. EDT

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Hurricane Melissa made landfall Tuesday as a Category 5 storm -- one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic basin.

The storm came ashore in southwestern Jamaica with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. That's just 5 mph shy of the Atlantic record for that metric.

The storm's central air pressure reached 892 millibars -- a sign of incredible intensity -- making it the third-strongest Atlantic storm on record by this metric. Air pressure measures how much the atmosphere weighs above a given point -- and in hurricanes, lower pressure means the air is rushing inward and upward with more force, driving stronger winds.

Earlier in the day, as the weather began to deteriorate here, the storm's peak intensity surpassed that of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Hurricane Melissa Leaves Trail of Destruction, Kills Dozens in Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba
October 29, 2025

Introduction:
(CBS) Hurricane Melissa has left dozens dead and widespread destruction across Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba, as it continues to threaten the Bahamas and Bermuda.

The storm was bringing damaging winds, flooding rains and dangerous storm surge to the Bahamas on Wednesday night, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said, and residents should remain sheltered.

Melissa made landfall over eastern Cuba early Wednesday, near the city of Chivirico, as an "extremely dangerous" Category 3 storm, the hurricane center said. On Tuesday, it pummeled Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph.

On Wednesday night, Melissa's core was about 105 miles east-northeast of the central Bahamas and about 800 miles southwest of Bermuda, according to the hurricane center. It had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, making it a Category 2 storm, and was moving northeast at about 21 mph.

It was expected to continue moving over the southeast or central Bahamas Wednesday night and pass near Bermuda late Thursday, the hurricane center said.

More than 85 dead as typhoon wreaks havoc in the Philippines

Source: BBC
At least 85 people have been killed while hundreds of thousands fled their homes as one of strongest typhoons this year ripped through the central Philippines, authorities say.

Typhoon Kalmaegi has flooded entire towns on the most populated central island of Cebu, where at least 49 of the fatalities were located. There are 75 others missing and 17 injured, officials said on Wednesday.

Videos show people sheltering on rooftops, while cars and shipping containers have been swept through the streets.

The official death toll, which is likely to rise, includes six crew members of a military helicopter that crashed on Mindanao island, south of Cebu, after it was deployed to assist in relief efforts.
