Snow, ice blasts through South with powerful winter storm
Source: AP
ATLANTA (AP) — A dangerous winter storm combining high winds and ice was sweeping through parts of the U.S. Southeast on Sunday, knocking out power, felling trees and fences and coating roads with a treacherous frigid glaze.

Tens of thousands of customers were without power in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. More than an inch of snow fell per hour in some parts of the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, according to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center.

The storm was making air travel extremely difficult in some parts of the South. The nation’s hardest-hit airport -- Charlotte Douglas International -- remained open around dawn Sunday, the airport said in a weather briefing. But more than 1,000 Sunday flights in Charlotte have been cancelled – more than 80% of the airport’s Sunday schedule, according to the flight tracking service f lightaware.com. Charlotte is a major hub in the South for American Airlines.

In Atlanta, where Delta Air Lines operates it main hub, more than 300 Sunday flights have been canceled.

Florida tornadoes destroy dozens of homes, leave 7,000 customers without power
Source: CNN

By Claudia Dominguez, Joe Sutton and Gene Norman,
(CNN)Two tornadoes struck southwest Florida Sunday morning, destroying at least 28 homes and damaging others in Lee County, while leaving about 7,000 houses there without power, officials said.

The tornadoes were generated by the same storm system that brought freezing rain and snow to other parts of the East Coast, where more than 50 million people Monday morning were under winter weather alerts.

As of early Monday morning, the storm system had knocked out power to more than 180,000 customers in its path, according to PowerOutage.us.

In a Sunday news conference, Cecil Pendergrass, co-chairman of the Lee County board of commissioners, said at least 62 homes were currently "unlivable."

More than 170K without power from massive winter storm
Source: The Hill

BY MYCHAEL SCHNELL
More than 170,000 people in the eastern United States did not have power on Monday morning after a massive winter storm slammed the region.

The most outages as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time were reported in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, according to PowerOutage.us.

The North Carolina mountains saw the largest amount of snow, meteorologist Marc Chenard told The Associated Press. Western Massachusetts, eastern Pennsylvania and portions of New England also reportedly experienced heavy snow accumulation. New York City and Boston saw significant snowfall as well.

And the storm isn't over. The National Weather Service Buffalo wrote in a tweet Monday morning that between 12 and 18 inches of snow will accumulate in Western New York during the day, and between eight and 14 inches in Genesee Valley, Finger Lakes and east of Lake Ontario.

Blizzard claims four attempting to cross US-Canada border
Source: The Guardian

Authorities believe the deaths occurred from exposure to extremely low temperatures reaching up to -31F

Four people, including an infant, have been found dead near the Canada-United States border, after a failed crossing attempt during brutal blizzard conditions.

The grim discovery came as officials south of the border announced the arrest of a US man on human smuggling charges.

Officers discovered the bodies of a man, woman and baby close to the border partially buried in the snow. A young boy, believed to be in his teens, was found nearby.

US East Coast hunkers down for 'bombogenesis' snowstorm

Published

The US East Coast is bracing for a major blizzard to hit the region for the first time in four years.

The storm is forecast to stretch from the Carolinas to Maine, packing hurricane-force winds in coastal parts. Five states have declared emergencies.

Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston, a city that is no stranger to snowfall, said the storm could be "historic".

More than two feet of snow could fall in New England. Weather officials also warn of flooding near the coast.

Over 5,000 US flights were cancelled between Friday and Sunday, according to FlightAware.

Winter storm brings freezing rain, snow to wide swath of US
Source: AP

By PAUL J. WEBER
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A major winter storm with millions of Americans in its path brought a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow to the middle section of the United States on Wednesday as airlines canceled hundreds of flights, governors urged residents to stay off roads and schools closed campuses.

The blast of frigid weather, which began arriving Tuesday night, put a long stretch of states from New Mexico and Colorado to Maine under winter storm warnings and watches. On Wednesday morning, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan saw freezing rain, sleet and snow.

More than a foot of snow was possible in parts of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan by the time the storm moves through, on the heels of a vicious nor’easter last weekend that brought blizzard conditions to many parts of the East Coast.

“It will be a very messy system and will make travel very difficult,” said Marty Rausch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.

70,000 without power in Texas due to massive storm
Source: The Hill
Severe winter weather has left nearly 70,000 Texans without power as of Thursday morning, as freezing temperatures continue to move eastward across the U.S. NWS Fort Worth said on Twitter that Hunt, Fannin and Collin County in northwestern Texas received the highest amount of freezing rain and ice overnight. Winds are expected to increase on Thursday and tree breakage will continue to occur.

According to poweroutage.us, another 24,000 customers in Arkansas have also lost power. These outages comes roughly one year after massive power outages swept across the Lone Star State, resulting in over 200 deaths and prompting criticisms of the state's preparedness against colder temperatures.

The National Weather Service said on Thursday that "an ongoing significant winter storm is expected to impact much of the central and Northeastern U.S. through Friday night." Additionally, the agency forecast that a "corridor of heavy ice accumulation is likely from Texas through the Ohio River Valley."

Governor Abbott Promised Last Fall that 'the Lights Will Stay On.' Now He Says There's no Guarantee.
by Muse Buchele
February 1, 2022

https://www.tpr.org/texas/2022-02-01/go ... -guarantee

Extract:
(Texas Public Radio) "No one can guarantee that there won’t be a load shed event," the governor said in response to a question about how he would measure the success of the electric grid. “But what we will work and strive to achieve and what we are prepared to achieve is that the power will stay on across the entire state.”

A “load shed event” is technical jargon for what is often referred to as a planned blackout. That’s when a grid operator cuts power to certain people, usually to stabilize supply and demand on the system.

It’s hard to argue with Abbott’s statement. Without a crystal ball, no one can say with 100% certainty that a blackout will not happen.

The thing is, Abbott did just that last fall.

“I can guarantee the lights will stay on,” he said in an interview with Fox 7’s Rudy Koski in November.
Don't mourn, organize.

Over 300,000 people without power amid massive winter storm
Source: AP

BY TORI B. POWELL
More than 304,000 people were without power Thursday evening as a massive winter storm lashes the central U.S. with heavy snow, ice and freezing cold rain, according to the national database PowerOutage.us. The weather also accounted for more than 5,000 flight cancellations and 2,400 delays on Thursday, FlightAware reports.

In parts of Tennessee, significant icefall of up to half an inch coupled with sizable sleet and snow accumulation has damaged trees and downed power lines, according to the National Weather Service and the City of Memphis. More than 100,000 residents in Memphis alone reported outages by Thursday afternoon. The state is seeing the most outages in the country, with over 146,000 residents in the dark, PowerOutage.us reported.

The storm also means roads in the state are slick. A crash involving 16 vehicles in Memphis sent six people to the hospital, two of whom had critical injuries, according to the Memphis Fire Department. Residents are advised to avoid the Austin Peay Highway area and to "expect significant delays."

With more heavy mixed precipitation forecast through the night, the NWS said Memphis residents can expect even more falling tree branches and power outages. City officials said Thursday that they are calling in as many outside crews as possible to help with the conditions, according to CBS affiliate WREG.
