Storm brings gusty winds, rain and snow to California
Source: AP

today
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The first in a week of storms brought gusty winds, rain and snow to California on Tuesday, starting in the north and spreading southward.

There were numerous reports of roadway flooding and downed trees and branches, the National Weather Service said.

Winter storm warnings were issued for the Sierra Nevada, where motorists were advised that the combination of winds and snow could make travel hazardous.

The greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County were warned to expect heavy snow with wind gusts around 50 mph (80 kph), and up to 100 mph (161 kph) along Sierra ridgetops. Lake Tahoe was expected to have waves that could capsize small vessels.

Near the coast where I live there has been an alternation of rain and clear skies. So not even below freezing except maybe a little just before dawn. Hardly extreme, but just by way of contrast. Of course, there is always tomorrow.
Don't mourn, organize.

National Guard checks homes in Buffalo for storm victims
Source: AP

By CAROLYN THOMPSON and JENNIFER PELTZ 51 minutes ago
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The National Guard went door to door in parts of Buffalo on Wednesday to check on people who had lost power during the area’s deadliest winter storm in decades, and authorities faced the tragic possibility of finding more victims amid melting snow.

As a deep freeze eased into milder weather, the National Guard members were knocking on doors in those neighborhoods in Buffalo and its suburbs, said Mark Poloncarz, the top official in the county that encompasses New York’s second-most-populous city.

“We are fearful that there are individuals who may have perished, living alone, or people who are not doing well,” he said.

Officials said more than 30 people so far have been reported to have died because of the blizzard that raged Friday and Saturday in western New York, an area prone to powerful winter storms. The historic Blizzard of 1977 killed as many as 29.

Deaths, flooding as storm hit Oregon and Washington state
Source: AP

By CLAIRE RUSH an hour ago
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A winter storm that brought powerful wind gusts to Oregon on Tuesday caused at least two fatal car accidents that left four people dead, preliminary police investigations have found.

Three people were killed, including a 4-year-old girl, when severe weather caused a large tree to fall on their pickup truck as they were driving on U.S. 26 about 15 miles east of the coastline, Oregon State Police said in a news release. The passengers were deceased when first responders arrived at the scene.

Further east on U.S. 26 on Mount Hood, a motorist was killed when a large tree fell on the cab of the commercial truck he was driving because of snow and strong winds, causing it to lose control and leave the highway, the state police said. The 53-year-old driver, who was alone in the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another person died when a tree fell and struck a pickup they were riding in as a passenger on Interstate 84 near Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon State Police said. The driver was injured and taken to a hospital. The weather appears to have contributed to the tree falling, said state police spokesperson Captain Kyle Kennedy.

Storm brings flooding, landslides across California
Source: AP

today

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Landslides of rock and mud closed roadways Friday across California as heavy rains kicked off what will be a series of storms poised to usher in the new year with downpours and potential flooding across much of the state and multiple feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada.

The atmospheric river storm, a long and wide plume of moisture pulled in from the Pacific Ocean, began sweeping across the northern part of the state Friday and was expected to bring more rain through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

A winter storm warning was in effect into Sunday for the upper elevations of the Sierra from south of Yosemite National Park to north of Lake Tahoe, where as much as 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow is possible atop the mountains, the National Weather Service said in Reno, Nevada.

A flood watch was in effect across much of Northern California through New Year’s Eve. Officials warned that rivers and streams could overflow and urged residents to get sandbags ready.
