The UK is having the warmest New Year's Day on record, with new high temperatures set for the second day in a row, the Met Office says.

St James's Park in central London saw temperatures of 16.2C (61.2F) on Saturday as 2022 was ushered in.

Warm air from the Azores has been reaching the UK in recent days, bringing unusually mild weather.

The previous New Year's Day record was set in 1916, when it reached 15,6C (60.1F) in Bude, Cornwall.

Friday became the warmest New Year's Eve on record.

Overnight storms bring damage to parts of US South
Source: AP
HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (AP) — A line of severe storms damaged homes, knocked out power and downed trees in parts of the southern United States late Saturday into Sunday morning.

Authorities closed roads in Hazel Green, Alabama, after power lines came down and homes suffered damage. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office shared photos online including one of a snapped power pole.

The weather also caused damage to businesses in Hazel Green, including a Walmart, local news outlets reported. The community is located about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Huntsville.

The same system brought down trees in the nearby town of Triana, roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Huntsville. Mayor Mary Caudle told WAFF-TV that about 280 residents took cover in a storm shelter Saturday night.

Fierce winter storm lashes South, mid-Atlantic with heavy snow, wind; nearly 850,000 without power
Source: USA Today

A potent winter storm packing heavy snow moved across the South and mid-Atlantic on Monday, snarling traffic, causing nearly 850,000 power outages and shutting the federal government in Washington.

In the core of the storm's heavy snow, there was the potential for 6-12 inches and locally higher amounts to pile up by the time the storm winds down Monday, AccuWeather said. That heavy amount of snow was most likely to fall from parts of eastern Virginia to the eastern shore of Maryland, much of Delaware and southern New Jersey.

As of mid-afternoon Monday, there were several reports of at least 10 inches of snow in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area until 4 p.m. EST Monday. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph were forecast, and travel was expected to be very difficult because of the hazardous conditions, the weather service said. The Weather Prediction Center said 2 inches of snow per hour could fall in some areas, and thundersnow was reported in at least five states, the Weather Channel said.

'Icemageddon' Strikes Alaska in Record Bout of Extreme Weather
January 4, 2022

https://www.sciencealert.com/icemageddo ... me-weather

Introduction:
(Science Alert) Extreme weather in Alaska that has brought record high temperatures and torrential downpours has left authorities in the far northern US state warning of "Icemageddon".

Huge sheets of ice are blocking roads and choking traffic in Fairbanks, Alaska's second largest city, reported the state's transportation department, which has coined the neologism – a play on "Armageddon" – to describe the chilly impasse.

"We're experiencing an unprecedented series of winter storms," the department tweeted.

Scientists say the unchecked burning of fossil fuels and other human activity is changing the climate, making it more unpredictable and prone to wild swings.

By ZARAR KHAN

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Temperatures fell to minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 Fahrenheit) amid heavy snowfall at Pakistan’s mountain resort town of Murree overnight, killing at least 22 people who were stuck in their vehicles, officials said Saturday.

Atiq Ahmed, an Islamabad police officer, said eight of the 22 fatalities were from the family of fellow police officer Naveed Iqbal, who also died. Most of the victims died of hypothermia, officials said.

Rescue services physician Abdur Rehman said that after evacuating all of the stranded tourists from their cars, the death toll stood at 22, including 10 men, 10 children and two women.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said thousands of vehicles had been pulled from the snow but more than a thousand were still stuck in the area Saturday.
