Heavy snow has left thousands without power in New England and New York
Source: NPR
BOSTON — Utility crews raced Saturday to restore power to tens of thousands of customers across New England and New York after a powerful storm dumped 2 feet of snow in some places.

More than 160,000 customers in New England were in the dark as of the afternoon and another 20,000 were without power in New York as heavy snow brought tree limbs onto power lines, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks outages across the country.

Restoration efforts were complicated by snow still falling in some places, making travel dangerous. Doug Foley, Eversource president of electric operations in New Hampshire, said snow-covered roads were making it tough for workers to reach communities in order to assess damage and make repairs.

"We are still taking on system damage in parts of the state where heavy, wet snow continues to fall, and hundreds of additional crews are coming to New Hampshire to support our restoration effort," Foley said in an emailed statement.

Arctic Blast This Week Brings the Coldest Christmas in Nearly 40 Years for Millions
Source: CNN
(CNN) - The coldest air of the season - by far - will dive down from Canada, bringing dangerously cold temperatures to millions this week. Temperatures will drop so low in some places that frostbite could begin in as little as 5 minutes on exposed skin.

Temperatures are already cold to start the week across much of the northern tier of the country. "Highs over central and eastern Montana will struggle to get above zero today, while daytime lows ranging from 0 to -15 degrees will be common from eastern Washington to the Upper Mississippi Valley," the Weather Prediction Center wrote.

But this is only the beginning of a brutal week that will get much, much colder - as temperatures dive 30 to 50 degrees below normal. "Daytime lows on Tuesday dip as low as -20 to -30 in parts of Montana, with sub-zero lows bleeding more into the central High Plains," the prediction center said. "Blustery winds throughout the region are responsible for bone-chilling wind chills, ranging as cold as -30 to even -60 degrees."

This week, more than 80% of the Lower 48 will experience temperatures below freezing. Places as far south as Houston, Austin, Texas, Atlanta and even Orlando, Florida, are currently included on that list. And some in the Midwest could also experience their coldest Christmas Day in nearly 40 years. A holiday storm set to impact millions...

It's been real fun. I get the privilege of trying to go to work in a blizzard tomorrow. Lol! -10 degrees Fahrenheit pretty much all day (feeling like -40s at times due to wind chill etc., at least that's what my weather app tells me). I joke that Siberia is visiting us (and we don't have the worst of it).

Over a million without power on U.S. East Coast and Texas due to winter storms
Source: Reuters
Dec 23 (Reuters) - More than a million homes and businesses were without power on the U.S. East Coast, Midwest and Texas on Friday as winter storms battered much of the country, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

Most outages were in North Carolina, with over 164,000 customers without power, followed by Virginia with over 92,000 and Connecticut with more than 89,000. More than a dozen other states east of the Mississippi River plus Oregon, Washington state, Missouri, Louisiana and Arkansas west of the Mississippi River each have more than 10,000 customers facing outages due to winter storms.

Leading into the holiday weekend, the storm is expected to bring blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes region, heavy rains followed by a flash freeze on the East Coast, wind gusts of 60 miles per hour (100 km per hour) and bitter cold as far south as the U.S.-Mexico border.

Georgia joined North Carolina and Kentucky this week in declaring states of emergency. Temperatures in northern Georgia were forecast to hit just 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 Celsius) with subzero wind chills.

A powerful winter storm claims at least 11 lives across the US
Source: CNN
Hundreds of thousands of Americans are waking up in the dark to unlit trees on Christmas Eve, after destructive winds and heavy snow from a winter storm tore down power lines and endangered drivers across the country, killing at least 11 people in its path.

As bone-chilling temperatures continue to grip the US this holiday weekend, the unrelenting storm is pummeling the Midwest and parts of the East with heavy snow, blizzard conditions and even flooding along the Northeast coast. No letup is in sight until the end of Christmas Day.

For days, forecasters and officials have been sounding the alarm on the grim conditions the storm promised to bring, while imploring drivers to stay off the icy, snow-covered roads and other travelers to alter holiday plans for optimal safety.

“Remember your loved ones care more about having you alive and that next Christmas than whether you can make this one,” Beshear told CNN Friday.

“People need to stay off the roads. … Being together is more important than ever, but staying safe is even more important than that,” Beshear added.

The ominous warning comes as the storm continues to bear down with blizzard conditions from the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, bringing the double threat of heavy snow and speedy winds.

12 dead in Buffalo as nation starts to emerge from brutal Arctic storm
Source: Washington Post
Officials on Sunday reported nine additional deaths in Erie County, N.Y., attributed to the catastrophic snowstorm that has wreaked havoc across much of the country, bringing to 12 the number of known fatalities in the hard-hit Buffalo area.

The people who died were found in homes and on the street, said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. The names of the dead were not released. The oldest victim who has been identified was 93, youngest was 26, officials said Sunday evening.

The Artic blast that reached its peak ferocity in Buffalo has spread a deep chill across much of the United States since Thursday, stretching from Washington state to Florida, with about 200 million people covered by a winter advisory, according to National Weather Service calculations. In Washington, D.C., the high temperature topped out at 22 degrees on Christmas Eve, the coldest maximum temperature on that day since 1989, according to NWS data.

Heavy snow in Japan leaves 17 dead, dozens injured
Source: AP

By MARI YAMAGUCHItoday
TOKYO (AP) — Heavy snow in large swaths of Japan has killed 17 and injured more than 90 people and left hundreds of homes without power, disaster management officials said Monday.

Powerful winter fronts have dumped heavy snow in northern regions since last week, stranding hundreds of vehicles on highways, delaying delivery services and causing 11 deaths by Saturday. More snowfall over the Christmas weekend brought the number of dead to 17 and injured to 93 by Monday morning, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Many of them had fallen while removing snow from the roofs or were buried underneath thick piles of snow sliding off rooftops.

Municipal offices in the snow-hit regions urged residents to use caution during snow removal activity and not to work alone.

The disaster management agency said a woman in her 70s was found dead buried underneath a thick pile of rooftop snow that suddenly fell on her in Yamagata prefecture’s Nagai City, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) north of Tokyo, where snow piled up higher than 80 centimeters (2.6 feet) Saturday.

Death toll rises to at least 55 as freezing temperatures and heavy snow wallop swaths of U.S.
Source: NBC News
A "once-in-a-lifetime” blizzard has killed at least 55 people in the United States, including 25 in western New York's Erie County, officials said Monday morning. The number of deaths from the monstrous storm was expected to grow as snow continued to blanket Erie County, leaving roads in many areas impassable, including the majority of Buffalo, County Executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference.

"We can see sort of the light at the end of the tunnel, but this is not the end yet," Poloncarz said. "We are not there." Snow was expected to fall in Erie County into Tuesday afternoon. Nationwide, temperatures plummeted, and huge snow drifts have trapped people inside their homes and snarled travel.

Stretching from the Great Lakes near Canada to the Rio Grande along the Mexican border, the storm has killed at least 55 people as of Monday morning, according to an NBC News tally. The deaths were recorded in 12 states: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

The medical examiner’s office in Erie County determined the 25 deaths there to be directly related to the blizzard, Poloncarz said. The county executive said a “good portion” of those deaths occurred in Buffalo, and that many died from heart problems while shoveling or snow blowing. Others were found dead inside their cars. At least one person in Niagara County died from carbon monoxide poisoning, he said. The ferocity of the storm was unlike any the region has seen, Poloncarz said.
