Universal coffee maker automatically brews a cuppa with nearly any pod

If you enjoy your coffee from a capsule, this new machine might be a worthwhile upgrade to your morning routine. The HiBrew H6 promises to make perfect cups of coffee from a wide range of pods by automatically recognizing which type you've dropped into it, and adjusting its settings accordingly.

That means you can use Nespresso, DG, K-Cup, and ESE pods, as well as your own ground coffee, and enjoy a cup with just the press of one button. The company's made a bunch of well-liked coffee machines over the past seven years, and has just launched its latest offering over on Kickstarter at a heavily discounted price of US$189.

While a few other coffee machines work with pods from different brands, this might well be the first to automatically figure out the right parameters for each one. And for aficionados with specific tastes, there's always the option to key in your own settings and save them to the machine.

Samsung Vision AI for TVs Will Offer Instant Search, Live Translate, and More
Samsung says its 2025 TVs will adapt to you with AI.
By Ryan Whitwam January 6, 2025

Samsung is one of the biggest TV manufacturers in the world, and its screens are about to enter the AI era. Samsung says its new Vision AI system will arrive on the company's 2025 TV lineup. It promises new AI experiences that integrate with your viewing but don't take you out of the content. However, these features are powered by the same generative AI technology that has appeared across the world in recent years, which can often be less than perfect.

At CES 2025, Samsung has unveiled a raft of new TVs, including the flagship Neo QLED 8K QN990F and the Frame Pro. There are also new OLED and QLED sets on offer for this coming year. With its NQ8 AI Gen3 Processor, the QN990F offers the most robust set of AI features with 8K upscaling, auto HDR, adaptive sound, and more.

World's first ePaper InkPoster displays art in vivid color
By Paul Ridden
January 08, 2025
Digital reader outfit PocketBook has designed what's billed as the world's first ePaper color poster/art display, and has partnered with E Ink and Sharp to bring it to life. The InkPoster comes in three sizes and employs two screen technologies.

Just like a conventional framed print you might hang on a wall, the InkPoster ePaper unit doesn't require any power to display its onscreen visuals – unless the user opts to change an image, which is the only time the InkPoster will dip into its built-in battery reserve. That could mean months, perhaps even a year, between top-ups, together with cable-free mounting.

LG combines projector, speaker and lamp for living room versatility
By Paul Ridden
January 12, 2025
Smart projectors often include speakers for an all-in-one home cinema experience, but LG's PF600U model stands on its own by throwing a LED mood lamp into the mix. The company is also showing off its smallest UST projector at CES 2025.

We regularly feature the latest multitools at New Atlas, and the PF600U from LG combines three handy functions in one unit for a multitool-like experience in the living room. From a distance, it looks like a floor-standing lamp – and indeed features a RGBB LED mood lamp with nine color lighting options to set the ambient tone of a living space.

If you want some relaxing music to go with your mood lamp, there's also a Bluetooth speaker cooked in with dual drivers and passive radiators. Those speakers provide the soundtrack for 1080p visuals thrown on the wall by the integrated projector as well, which can shape up from 30 to 120 diagonal inches at 1.2:1.

Side-step right for a latte: The future is controlling apps with your feet
By Paul McClure
January 16, 2025
Researchers have developed proof-of-concept technology that allows people to do common smartphone tasks – listen to music, take a phone call, and order food – all by making simple, not-too-socially-awkward gestures with their feet while they’re walking.

We walk a lot in our day-to-day lives, be it walking to work, to the shops, or taking the dog to the park. Indeed, the average adult takes between 3,500 and 7,000 steps daily. But what if you could use your feet to do something cool while you were walking? Like ordering Uber Eats or skipping a song on your Spotify playlist?

Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada have led a study that brings this kind of technology a step closer to reality (no pun intended). In it, they ordered a coffee, controlled a music app, and answered phone calls on an augmented reality headset while moving, using only intentional foot movements.Image
“There’s a long history of using feet to control machines,” said Ching-Yi Tsai, the study’s lead author and a former visiting scholar at Waterloo’s David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. “For example, the pedals on the car, but very little research has been done into using the way we walk as an input for a device.”

E Ink's color ePaper tech gets supersized for outdoor displays
By Paul Ridden
February 10, 2025
https://newatlas.com/technology/e-ink-k ... -displays/
For the past few years, we've seen a bunch of e-readers and e-notes featuring E Ink's Kaleido 3 technology. But if you thought that this color ePaper was limited to handheld devices, think again. E Ink has now shown off 75-inch outdoor displays.

E Ink partnered with four companies for an ISE 2025 showcase of the Kaleido 3 Outdoor technology – Samsung, LG Information Display, DynaScan and Agile Display Solutions.

"As more countries look to reduce their carbon footprint and increase the sustainability of their communities, the benefits of an E Ink display, with its low power consumption and non-light pollution characteristics, can bring real change to indoor and outdoor Digital Out-of-Home signage," said Dr. F.Y. Gan, President of E Ink. "Our largest E Ink Kaleido display to date offers a compelling solution to address the need for a dynamic display that also provides environmental solutions."
Image
That ePaper technology here is dubbed Kaleido Outdoor 3 and makes use of a RGB color filter array atop a monochrome E Ink film to produce 4,096 colors along with crisp, clear text. As the name suggests, this version has been designed for outdoor digital signage applications, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -15 °C to 65 °C ( 5 °F to 149 °F).

Trump rolls back standards for water-using appliances, light bulbs

Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON, Feb 11 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Tuesday moved to revert to older standards for light bulbs as well as toilets, showers and other water-using appliances, a day after signing an order promoting plastic straws and rescinding a plan to reduce single-use plastics.

Trump said he would call on the Environmental Protection Agency to go back to water standards from his first White House term that would also affect sinks, washing machines and dishwashers.

In a post on his private social media platform, Trump wrote that he was directing EPA Secretary Lee Zeldin "to immediately go back to my Environmental Orders," calling them common sense.

"I look forward to signing these orders," Trump added.

More than 425 popular campsites across Pa. are closed indefinitely due to DOGE cuts

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
Several federally-operated campgrounds at one of Pennsylvania’s most popular summer destinations will be closed indefinitely due to “executive-order driven staffing shortages.”

Raystown Lake, in Huntingdon County, is the largest lake entirely within Pennsylvania. The 8,300-acre lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps Engineers and, according to a news release from the agency’s Baltimore office, staffing shortages will require staff to focus on “dam operations for flood protection and emergency response readiness” ahead of the 2025 season.

According to the Army Corps, the lakes Seven Points, Susquehannock, and Nancy’s Boat-to-Shore Campgrounds will all be closed until further notice. All told, more than 300 campsites will be closed as a result of the announcement, including boat-in only sites.

In addition, further north in Tioga County, Tompkins Campground on Tioga-Hammond and Cowanesque Lakes will also close, along with its swim beach and boat ramp. Tompkins has approximately 125 sites.

All-new Insta360 X5: The 360° actioncam becomes tougher than ever
By Utkarsh Sood
April 22, 2025
https://newatlas.com/electronics/insta360-x5/
Insta360 flipped the switch on action cameras when it released its first 360-degree camera, the One RS, in 2022. The actioncam took off in no time, coming as the first major offering that blended action camera functionality with 360-degree capture, perfect for adventurous creators and immersive storytelling.

The tech only got better over time, and as is the case every year, the company has just released its all-new flagship camera for 2025, dubbed the X5. But for a camera that was already near-flawless, what more could be done?
Image
Make it the toughest. That’s what the PR says. The new X5 becomes the most durable 360-degree actioncam from the Chinese brand, but surely, that can’t be the only overhaul the camera gets. In fact, it also gets a bigger sensor, some AI goodness, and a replaceable lens system.

Google's futuristic 3D videoconferencing platform to ship this year
By Paul Ridden
May 21, 2025

For the past few years, Google has been developing 3D video technology that would allow distant colleagues, friends or family to chat as though they were in the same room. Now the tech giant has rebranded Project Starline to Google Beam to prepare for commercial rollout.

As with Starline, Google has taken the wraps off the Beam platform at its annual developer conference. The concept remains about the same, but the technology has evolved to the point of market readiness.

Essentially, the idea is that a user would face a large screen with a bunch of cameras capturing different angles and tracking head movement "down to the millimeter" at 60 frames per second. The person on the other end of the chat is sat in front of the same kind of setup.

AI-powered golf caddie lugs your clubs and follows you from hole to hole
By Bronwyn Thompson
May 29, 2025
You'll never have to carry your clubs around the course again – or even from the car to the clubhouse – with this new AI-powered camera-equipped smart caddie, which will even recognize you and follow every step of the way.

One model will even assess your swing in real time, displaying feedback on a bright, sturdy screen attached to the buggy. What's more, both available models are almost half price right now.

While it's not the first electric golf caddie, the Robera NEO series boasts a built-in time-of-flight (TOF) camera and AI to make sure it's only following you, without you needing to guide it around trees, bunkers or other players, or use a remote. It also uses GPS to map the course to make sure you both get around the ground in the easiest way.

The vision setup means the NEO recognizes your movements to follow you – and has gesture control, so a wave of the hand will trigger it to follow you and also signal it to stop.

Sony updates tiny fixed-lens camera with 61-MP full-frame sensor and AI
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
July 16, 2025

It's been nearly a decade since the second iteration of Sony's enthusiast-grade RX1R camera, a compact full-frame shooter with a fixed lens that's designed to slip into your tailored jacket. It's got a bunch of new internals and features to bring it up to date – and command an eye-wateringly high asking price.

Perhaps the most significant update for the RX1R III that's made for fuss-free creative shooting is the 61-megapixel output from its 35-mm Exmor R sensor (which previously did 42.4 megapixels in the RX1R II).

The idea is that even though you'll be using a fixed prime lens, you'll still have plenty of flexibility to crop into a tight, thoughtful composition, and end up with a sharp and detailed result.

Movies on the move: Huawei packs a full-color projector into headlights
By Monica J. White
May 15, 2026

Huawei's latest XPixel smart headlights upgrade automotive lighting from a safety feature into a full-color projection system that can play movies, render games, and guide drivers – all from the front of the car.

Smart headlights have been creeping toward this future for the better part of a decade. We've previously covered Mercedes' early Digital Light concept that projected street signs and markings onto the road, as well as the Maybach version that packed a million pixels into each lamp for driver-assist graphics. Those systems were monochrome, though, and focused solely on driving.
