Residents of Indian-administered Kashmir “tense and anxious” after night of shelling
From CNN’s Mukhtar Ahmad, Lex Harvey and Manveena Suri
Residents of Indian-administered Kashmir woke to the sounds of explosions and shelling after India launched cross-border strikes against its neighbor, with some hiding in fear and others cheering the strikes as long-overdue revenge.
“We have been tense and anxious and glued to the television channels,” a 30-year-old civilian who lives near the city of Kupwara told CNN. “This is the first time I’ve heard shelling this intense over my village.”
“I woke up around 2:30 a.m. and heard sounds of explosions and firing across the border. This went on until 5:30 a.m.,” said the resident, who requested not to be named.
India’s strikes – on what it called “terrorist infrastructure” – come more than two weeks after militants killed 26 civilians in Indian-controlled Kashmir. New Delhi pinned the massacre on Pakistan, though Islamabad denied those claims.
Pakistan said it shot down five Indian Air Force jets in response. India has not confirmed the fighter jet losses and CNN is unable to verify the claim.
“We spent a sleepless night because of the heavy shelling,” said one resident living in the village of Uroosa, close to the Line of Control that divides Indian- and Pakistani-controlled parts of Kashmir.
“There were cries of children, women and it was a desperate situation,” said the resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
A 21-year-old student living in the village of Uroosa told CNN that “shelling was happening all night. Everyone is scared, there is damage in the area too. People are scared and are planning to leave.”
“We are fifteen members in the family holed up in two rooms,” the student said. “We are sitting in the back rooms of the home so we can escape shelling.”
Elsewhere in India-administered Kashmir, residents cheered news of India’s attack, according to video footage by ANI.
“This is a very good move and we were waiting for India to give a befitting reply to Pakistan and India has given a commendable reply to them and we are happy that this happened,” Rishi, a resident of Poonch, told ANI.
Another resident told the outlet that “there was much anger among the people” following last month’s massacre. “Hence, this was indeed needed.”

Pakistan said it downed 12 Indian loitering munition drones across the country overnight Wednesday into Thursday, after what it called a “serious provocation” from New Delhi that wounded four soldiers and killed a civilian.
“India has undertaken yet another act of blatant military aggression against Pakistan,” Pakistan Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said at a press conference Thursday.
CNN cannot independently verify the claims and has reached out to the Indian Air Force and Ministry of Defense for comment.

Pakistan Army claims "unprovoked firing" by India and says several Indian army checkpoints destroyed in response
From CNN staff
From CNN staff
https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/ind ... 6770036387Pakistan’s army destroyed several Indian Army “checkposts” along their disputed border in Kashmir in response to “unprovoked firing” from the Indian side, a Pakistan security source told CNN on Friday.
Pakistani troops destroyed checkpoints in six locations along the Line of Control that divides the disputed territory of Kashmir, the source said.
India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in full but each control only part of the region.
The source did not give any details on the checkpoints or when the firing from both sides took place.
Dangerous border: The Line of Control is one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders and exchanges of fire are not uncommon.
But the level of conflict has increased dramatically in the wake of a militant attack on Indian tourists in Kashmir last month, which India blamed on Pakistan and Islamabad denied, and this week’s airstrikes on Pakistan.

Pak defense minister warns full scale war is imminent
https://www.businesstoday.in/world/stor ... 2025-05-09As tensions between India and Pakistan rise, with repeated cross-border skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has suggested that the only remaining option for Islamabad may be a full-scale war with its neighbour.
In an interview with a Pakistani media outlet, Asif stated, "We don’t see any other available means other than this option (war) due to the aggressive actions adopted by India in the last four days. We have tried to de-escalate the situation, but the chances of that seem minimal. We have to pay them back in the same coin."

From CNN’s Sophia Saifi in Islamabad
Pakistani military has started its retaliation against “Indian aggression,” Pakistan state TV announced on Saturday.
The announcement came shortly after Pakistan said India had attacked several of its military air bases.
CNN cannot independently verify this claim. CNN has reached out to India’s Ministry of Defense and the Indian Air Force for a response.

Portable hospitals moved to border areas

Portable hospitals moved to border areas
Amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan, indigenously developed portable hospitals — designed for emergency situations and equipped to treat bullet injuries, fractures, and severe bleeding — have been delivered by road to key hospitals near the border areas as part of health preparedness efforts. Additionally, 2,000 healthcare personnel have been trained at these hospitals.
A team of experts from the HLL Lifecare Limited has been delivering BHISHM Cubes — indigenously developed portable hospitals — and training the staff to use them at big, tertiary care hospitals close to the border regions across the country, including Jammu, Rishikesh, Bhatinda, Kolkata and Shillong. The Cube closest to the border is available at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, which can be deployed at the frontlines if needed.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda chaired a high-level meeting on Friday to review the emergency preparedness of health systems. Hospitals have been asked to ensure availability of essential drugs, adequate supply of blood, oxygen and trauma care kits. AIIMS-Delhi and other Central government hospitals have mobilised doctors and nurses with supplies. Mock drills have been conducted at hospitals such as AIIMS, PGIMER and JIPMER among others. A 24X7 control and command centre will coordinate the efforts and support the states.
