Los Angeles bishop shot dead in Hacienda Heights
A Los Angeles County bishop known as a "peacemaker" was found dead of a gunshot wound in Hacienda Heights on Saturday, a law enforcement source said.

David O'Connell, who served as a priest and bishop in L.A. County for nearly half a century, was found dead in the 1500 block of Janlu Avenue in Hacienda Heights around 1 p.m., according to the source, sheriffs officials and a statement from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

"It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness. As a priest and later a bishop here in Los Angeles for 45 years, Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for our blessed mother," Archbishop Jose Gomez said in a statement.

"He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected. He was also a good friend, and I will miss him greatly. I know we all will."

Gomez said only that O'Connell had "passed away unexpectedly."

In a brief statement, the sheriff's department said it was investigating the shooting death of an adult male at 12:57 p.m. on Saturday. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's department, which offered no details about a possible suspect or motive. A spokeswoman declined to answer questions Saturday night.

5 dead in apparent murder-suicide in South Florida
Police: 5 dead in apparent murder-suicide in South Florida

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (AP) — Police in South Florida were investigating five deaths Friday in what they believe to be a murder-suicide.

Miami-Dade police officers responded to a Miami Lakes home Friday morning after a relative requested a welfare check because she had been unable to contact the occupants, a news release said.

After meeting with the relative, uniformed officers entered the residence through a rear window, authorities said. Inside, they found three females and two males dead from apparent gunshot wounds, officials said. The wounds of one man appeared to be self-inflicted, leading investigators to believe the case was a murder-suicide.

8 reported dead after 2 suspected smuggling boats crash at Black's Beach in San Diego
Source: LA Times

SAN DIEGO — At least eight people died late Saturday night when two suspected smuggling boats overturned in the ocean off Black’s Beach in the Torrey Pines area in what officials called one of the deadliest maritime events in San Diego history.

Officials were alerted to the incident when a Spanish-speaking woman called 911 around 11:30 p.m. asking for help. She said two boats were near Black’s Beach, one with eight people onboard and a second with eight to 10 people. She told dispatchers the one she was on had made it to shore while the other had capsized and people were in the water.

However, emergency crews found both boats capsized and did not find any survivors, said Lifeguard Chief James Gartland, of the San Diego Fire Department.

A lifeguard dispatcher used GPS coordinates from the woman’s cellphone to pinpoint the location to water off of Black Gold Road, south of Torrey Pines Gliderport, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

As right on schedule, yet another school shooting at the historic Denver East High School
https://www.9news.com/article/news/loca ... 81a58ddad1
While initial reports are non-life-threatening injuries to two adult faculty, the fact that this incredible school was the site for a young student athlete's shooting (and later death) on a street near the school just a few weeks ago makes this all the more horrendous. Since that young man's death, students have conducted walk-outs and gone to the state legislature for more action on gun control and safety in schools. While most of you know the infamous Colorado school shootings (of which Columbine is only the most known), you may be unaware of how much gun control legislation has actually been successfully passed in its wake (and the aftermath of the Aurora theater shootings). Yet, it is only a drop in the bucket.

Years ago I lived near East High (which dates to 1875 and is architecturally just incredible bordering Denver's City Park) and it was a favorite walking locale for me with my last (still much-missed and beloved) dog. So this is especially hitting home for me.
