How Soviet Legacy has Influenced Foreign Policy in Georgia and Ukraine
October 3, 2024

Introduction:
(Eurekalert) The legacy of the Soviet Union’s collapse plays a greater role in the foreign policies of Georgia and Ukraine than previous studies have suggested. Conducting foreign policy in former Soviet countries can be a major challenge as the Russian state does not accept the new order. These are the findings outlined in the thesis of political scientist Per Ekman from Uppsala University.

“To understand Russia’s war in Ukraine, for example, it is important to see the war as part of a longer historical event. Since their first day of independence, Georgia and Ukraine have had to deal with Russian ambitions to control the region. For many in the West, it took a long time after the end of the Cold War to realise that a significant part of the Russian political leadership had not let go of the idea of controlling the countries that Moscow ruled during the Soviet era,” explains Per Ekman, doctor of political science at Uppsala University.

Russia certainly put political pressure on Ukraine in negotiations in the 1990s, particularly over the Black Sea Fleet and the Crimean peninsula. Moreover, it took time for the Kremlin to recognise Ukraine’s borders. But the result was seemingly peaceful agreements, which contributed to a significant proportion of Ukraine's decision-makers and population favouring a continued pragmatic relationship with Russia, although they also wanted to cooperate with the EU, the US and to some extent NATO. “There was a minority of Ukrainian politicians who wanted to cut ties with Russia, but the country’s largest party led by the influential Donetsk Network, rejected future Ukrainian membership of NATO and extended the Russian military presence in Crimea in 2010.

Zelenskiy sees 'opportunity' to end war in Ukraine by 2025
October 9, 20245:42 PM GMT+1

Oct 9 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that the current state of play on the battlefield had created an opportunity for steps to end Russia's more than 2-1/2-year-old invasion no later than next year.

Addressing the third Ukraine-South East Europe summit in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, the Ukrainian leader said Kyiv was counting on the support of its important allies including the United States.

"In October, November and December, we have a real chance to move the situation towards peace and long-term stability," he said. "The situation on the battlefield creates an opportunity to make this choice - a choice in favour of decisive action to end the war no later than 2025."

Zelenskiy did not spell out how and why he perceived such an opportunity. Russian forces now hold just under 20% of Ukraine, in its east and south, and have been gradually advancing after a protracted stalemate as Kyiv struggles to obtain more Western support in hopes of turning the tables in the grinding war.

His comments come amid great uncertainty for Kyiv ahead of the Nov. 5 U.S. election that could return Donald Trump to the White House. Trump has said he would seek a quick end to the war, which Kyiv's supporters fear could entail crushing concessions being foisted on Ukraine.

North Korean Troops Deserting Ukraine Frontline Days After Arrival
by Jordan King
October 16, 2024

Introduction:
(Newsweek) Some 18 North Korean soldiers are believed to have deserted the Russian frontline, with Kremlin fighters reportedly searching for them.

The troops were deployed in Russia's Kursk and Bryansk oblasts, about four miles from the border with Ukraine, when they deserted, the public broadcasting company of Ukraine, Suspilne, reported.

Intelligence officials cited by the broadcaster said the Russian military is searching for the North Korean soldiers, while commanders are trying to conceal the desertion from their higher-ups.

It comes after reports that Moscow was planning to assemble a battalion of troops sent over by Kim Jong Un to help push Ukraine's forces out of Kursk.
Ukrainian outlet LIGA reported on Tuesday that the soldiers would be involved in combat missions in the country's Southwestern regions, where Russia is still battling Ukraine's incursion.

North Korea’s special forces in Russia ready to join Putin’s war in Ukraine, South Korea’s spy agency says
1 hour ago

South Korea’s spy agency has warned that North Korea has sent a battalion of troops to bolster Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) said in a statement that Russian navy ships had transferred 1,500 North Korean special operation forces to the Russian port city of Vladivostok earlier this month.

It said they are currently staying at military bases in Vladivostok and other locations in Russia including Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk and Blagoveshchensk, and that they will probably be deployed to battlegrounds after completing their adaptation training.

The NIS posted on its website satellite and other photos showing what it called Russian navy ship movements near a North Korean port, along with suspected North Korean mass gatherings in Ussuriysk and Khabarovsk, in the past week. It said more North Korean troops are expected to be sent to Russia soon.

The NIS also said it had been working with the Ukrainian intelligence service, and that it had used facial recognition artificial intelligence technology to identify North Korean officers in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region supporting Russian forces firing North Korean missiles.

US is still technically at war with North Korea, you know.

Imagine if Ukraine became a theater of the Korean War.

I feel like we're already dealing with WW3, given that the Sudanese civil war is pretty much a theater of the Russia/Ukraine War, which is in turn sort of linked to the Israel-Palestine War and perhaps now the Korean War.

Nato says North Korean troops deployed to Russia's Kursk region
28 October 2024, 11:35 GMT

North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia and are operating in the Kursk border region where Ukrainian troops have a foothold, Nato has said for the first time.

The alliance's Secretary General, Mark Rutte, said he could confirm the deployment after weeks of intelligence reports, following a meeting with South Korean security and defence officials on Monday.

The newly installed Nato chief said the deployment represented a "significant escalation" and a "dangerous expansion" of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Last week, President Vladimir Putin refused to deny that North Korean troops had arrived in Russia, following reports that Pyongyang was preparing to send thousands of troops to aid its ally.

"This is our sovereign decision," Putin said, sidestepping the question during a news conference. "Whether we use it or not, where, how, or whether we engage in exercises, training, or transfer some experience. It’s our business."
