Russia launched 280 drones and missiles overnight, Ukraine's air force said.

By David Brennan August 19, 2025, 4:55 AM

LONDON -- Ukraine's air force reported a major Russian attack on Monday night and into Tuesday morning -- the largest overnight barrage for weeks, coming while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Donald Trump and a delegation of European leaders in Washington.

The air force said Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles into Ukraine, of which 30 drones and six missiles were intercepted or suppressed. The air force reported the impacts of 40 drones and four missiles across 16 locations, with debris reportedly falling in three locations.

Ukraine's Energy Ministry said energy infrastructure in the central Poltava region was a focus of the strikes. "As a result of the attack, large-scale fires broke out," the ministry said in a statement.

Oil refining and gas facilities were attacked, the statement said, describing the strikes as the latest in a campaign of "systematic terrorist attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which is a direct violation of international humanitarian law."...................

Unmanned aerial vehicles carried out overnight strikes on multiple Russian regions, hitting strategic industrial facilities, including the Ust-Luga port in Leningrad region and the Syzran oil refinery in Samara region.

According to Leningrad region governor Alexander Drozdenko, ten drones were reported destroyed over the Ust-Luga port on the morning of August 24.

Russian Telegram channels and local residents published footage showing drones striking the Gazprom Ust-Luga gas processing plant, one of the largest in Europe.

What Nations Around the World Can Learn from Ukraine
September 18, 2025

Introduction:
(Eurekalert) When Russia mounted a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many outsiders expected the worst. Predictions swirled that the capital city of Kyiv would fall in a matter of days or weeks.

But Kyiv, which is home to nearly 3 million people, is still standing today. So is the majority of Ukraine, even though the country has experienced extreme losses. Hundreds of thousands of civilians and military members have died, roughly 3 million people have been displaced within Ukraine, and 20,000 children have been forcefully deported to Russia.

Now, in a recent special issue of the journal Post-Soviet Affairs, political scientists from the United States, Ukraine and beyond take a fresh look at how the nation has persevered through the crisis. The studies examine how resilience can spring not just from armed forces but from the actions of everyday people and communities.
Additional Extract:
The political scientist also offers a warning: Ukrainians have been remarkably resilient, she said, but they can only be resilient for so long.

“Society can get tired, and some resources are running out,” (Inna) Melnykovska said. “This resilience has been long-term, but it’s not endless. There should still be support from outside.
