Hunt for the Gunman who Killed UnitedHealthcare's CEO Heads into Third Day as New Clues merge
by Michale Balsamo, Jake Offenhartz, and Michale R. Sisak
December 5, 2024

Introduction:
(ABC) NEW YORK -- As the investigation into a masked gunman who stalked and killed the head of one of the largest U.S. health insurers moved into its third day Friday, possible leads emerged about his travel before the shooting.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was killed in a dawn ambush Wednesday as he walked from his midtown hotel to the company’s annual investor conference across the street, just blocks from Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center.

But days later, the gunman's whereabouts and identity remained unknown as did the reason for the killing. New York City police say evidence firmly points to it being a targeted attack.

Investigators worked to piece together more of the timeline of the gunman’s movements before the shooting, examine security camera footage and even test a discarded water bottle and protein bar wrapper in a hunt for his DNA.

The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were scrawled on the ammunition, two law enforcement officials said Thursday, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation. The messages mirror the phrase “delay, deny, defend,” which is commonly used by lawyers and critics about insurers that delay payments, deny claims and defend their actions.

caltrek’s comment: Not only is “delay, deny, defend” a frequently used phrase regarding insurance coverage, but there was actually a book by that title: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delay,_Deny,_Defend

How to Think About the Public Backlash to the Killing of a Health Care CEO
by Aja Romano and Sigal Samuel
December 7, 2024

Introduction:
(Vox) A man was killed. That’s the kind of thing people normally get upset about. But not this week. This week, when UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead in Manhattan, the internet erupted in cheers.

Many people, including many progressives and liberals, said they would refuse to mourn the UnitedHealthcare executive because of the habitual unfairness of health insurance providers like the one Thompson oversaw.

The backlash against Thompson spread across social media, from TikTok to Twitter, LinkedIn to Bluesky — typically acerbic jokes about the poster’s empathy being out of network or that Thompson’s claim to sympathy had been denied. Some users commented with “deny, delay, depose” — a reference to the three words reportedly inscribed on the gunman’s shell casings, themselves a reference to the well-known insurance system tactic of “deny, delay, defend” when warding off claims from patients.

The online reaction felt uncomfortable to some bystanders given that we’re all supposed to care about human dignity — the idea that every single person has intrinsic and inalienable value. The concept is at the heart of human rights: It’s because every person has value that they have the right to, say, not be murdered.

Yet the people posting vitriolic comments about Thompson feel justified in being smug about the death of this human in particular. That may be understandable, given the millions of Americans who suffered as a result of the industry that he represented. But disregarding human dignity by committing or cheering on an act of violence can’t be the answer. So, what is? Is there a better way to square moral outrage at someone and what they represent, while keeping faith with a belief in their human dignity?

caltrek’s comment: This relates to the reason I chose this thread to post about the murder. To me, it was above all a violent crime. Further, I do not like the idea of a lone gunman acting as judge, jury, and executioner. Still, when democratic processes fail to yield just results, one can expect these sorts of acts of desperation to emerge. To explain is not to excuse, but to be complacent about the underlying grievance is also not desirable. The most fundamental of underlying grievances is the inequality of income and power. With the election of Trump, we are continuing to march down a road in which that underlying problem continues to fester and even worsen.
Don't mourn, organize.

Yeah, ideally the law would've dealt with scumbags like him already.

Reported fatalities in New Orleans as vehicle apparently slams into Bourbon Street crowd

By Tucker Reals
Updated on: January 1, 2025 / 6:24 AM EST / CBS News

There were reports of multiple fatalities early Wednesday after a vehicle plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter. The popular tourist district would have been busy in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Witnesses told CBS News reporter Kati Weis that a truck crashed into a crowd on Bourbon Street at high speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.

Weis saw multiple people on the ground being treated for injuries.

A New Orleans Police Department spokesperson told CBS News "initial reports show a car may have plowed into a group of people. Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities."

This breaking news story will be updated.

Mass shooting in Queens leaves at least 11 people injured
https://www.amny.com/new-york/queens/ma ... ry-1-2025/

Police in Queens are investigating a reported mass shooting at a nightclub on Wednesday that has left at least 11 people wounded. Law enforcement sources said the gunfire erupted near the Amazura event hall at 91-12 144th Place in Jamaica, within the confines of the 103rd Precinct, at about 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 1.

At least three individuals wounded in the shooting walked into a local hospital seeking treatment, sources familiar with the investigation said.

Numerous NYPD units have converged in the event hall area and established a large crime scene. As many as two suspects connected to the shooting are at large, according to reports on the Citizen app.

The Amazura event hall is located several blocks away from the Jamaica Long Island Rail Road station. Back in April 2024, two men were shot and wounded at the location.

Tesla Cybertruck Explosion Outside Trump Hotel in Las Vegas Investigated as Possible Act of Terrorism
Updated January 2, 2025

Introduction:
(CBS) A Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas early Wednesday, killing one person, in an incident that is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, according to law enforcement.

Investigators do not believe there's "any other danger to the community right now," FBI agent Jeremy Schwartz said at a news conference Wednesday evening.

The sole person inside the vehicle died, and seven people suffered minor injuries, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. He called the explosion "an isolated incident" and said there is no indication that it was linked to ISIS.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the Cybertruck was rented to Matthew Alan Livelsberger, 37, an active duty U.S. Army Special Forces intelligence sergeant, who was serving in Germany but was on leave in Colorado at the time of the incident.

At a briefing Thursday, the FBI said they considered Livelsberger the subject of the investigation but were still awaiting conclusive DNA identification. They said his military ID, passport and credit cards were found in the vehicle, along with several firearms, and that the driver had shot himself in the head before the vehicle detonated.

4/7/25 – NCRI Assassination Culture Brief

https://networkcontagion.us/reports/4-7 ... ure-brief/

Surprised Trump is more hated than Elon (I'd expect it to be the other way round). Also disagree with Costello and Patrick's definition of leftauth- wouldn't that be stuff like Stalinism and Maoism? I mean, it's possible that someone might support the deaths of Trump or Elon while opposing authoritarianism- in fact, their reasons for supporting their deaths may be anti-authoritarian or even anarchist in nature.

Last time I checked, most people either supported the attack or at least refused to condemn it. So Lorenz is right.
