Mayman Aerospace flying motorcycle becomes a military VTOL jet drone
By David Szondy
May 09, 2024
https://newatlas.com/military/mayman-ae ... ry-drones/
Mayman Aerospace has unwrapped its new family of jet-powered, High-Speed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (HS VTOL) AI-equipped drones that can deliver everything from medical supplies to Hellfire missiles at 500 mph (800 km/h) in a compact airframe.

First shown in a 3D-printed mock up at SOF Week 2024 in Tampa, Florida, the new Razor VTOL aircraft is a derivation of Mayman's Speeder Air Utility Vehicle (AUV). The main difference is that instead of carrying a white-knuckled pilot on the back of a flying motorcycle the Razor is a scalable family of autonomous military drones designed for a variety of missions.

According to the company, the Razor is powered by four gimbaled jet turbine engines with vectored thrust that can burn any heavy fuel and can be refueled in minutes – giving it a considerable advantage over electric-propelled equivalents.

If he's already speculating it, you can bet countries are already planning for it. :?

Ukraine bets on land robots for next phase of war
Ukraine is betting on land robots and seeking billions more in investment to boost its domestic weapons manufacturing, Ukraine’s top official in charge of defense production efforts said Tuesday during a briefing to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

“This year will be the year of [unmanned] land systems,” said Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine’s minister for strategic industries of Ukraine. “You’ll see more of them on the frontline” over the next 12 months, he said.

Land systems would be used for medical evacuation, logistics, de-mining, and mining, as well as other combat tasks, Kamyshin said.

As Ukraine seeks to use ever more sophisticated weapons to counter Russia, it first needs to find the investments necessary to ramp up production, Kamyshin added.

New L3Harris Autonomous Recon Vehicle Can Spot Targets, Manage Multiple Drones
This self-driving reconnaissance vehicle resembles a small Cybertruck.

L3Harris, the defense contractor responsible for much of the United States military and law enforcement equipment, has unveiled the latest in its unsettlingly capable surveillance technology. At the Association of the US Army’s annual meeting last week, the company showed off Diamondback, a self-driving reconnaissance vehicle with drone support, radio integration, and more.

Defense contractor announces its largest swarm-capable ocean drone yet
By Michael Franco
October 23, 2024
Saronic, a defense-technology company based in Austin, Texas, has announced the Corsair, its largest autonomous surface vessel yet. It's a 24-ft (7.3-m) sleek ship with customizable capabilities that can be deployed in "the thousands" for the US Navy.

Think "drone" and you're likely to think of any one of the many autonomous machines that fly through the air. But there are surface-based ocean drone ships as well, and the US Department of Defense (DoD), through its Replicator initiative, is looking to stockpile them. According to Replicator's mission, the program "will deliver all-domain attritable autonomous systems to warfighters at a scale of multiple thousands across multiple warfighting domains, within 18-24 months, or by August 2025."
With an announcement this week, Saronic has signaled that it's ready to take up the challenge.

Report on US Killer Robots Warns of 'Reckless, Dangerous Arms Race'
by Eloise Goldsmith
November 22, 2024

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) A report from the government watchdog Public Citizen released Friday gives the who, what, when, where, and why of the Pentagon's flagship Replicator initiative—a program to increase the number of weapons, particularly drones, in the hands of the U.S. military.

In the report, Public Citizen re-ups concerns about one particular aspect of the program. According to the report's author, Savannah Wooten, the Defense Department has remained ambiguous on the question of whether it is developing artificial intelligence weapons that can "deploy lethal force autonomously—without a human authorizing the specific use of force in a specific context." These types of weapons are also known as "killer robots."

"It is not yet clear whether or not these technologies are designed, tested, or intended for killing," according to the report.

"All signs point to the Pentagon developing 'killer robots' via Replicator, despite deflections from Pentagon representatives themselves," wrote Wooten in the summary of the report.

The program, which was announced last year, is part of the Department of Defense's plan to deter China.

New ‘Counter-Drone Strategy’ Unveiled by Pentagon
by Joseph Trevithick and Howard Altman
December 5, 2024

Introduction:
(The War Zone) The Pentagon has released a summary of a new classified strategy to guide efforts to protect American forces abroad and across the U.S. homeland from growing drone threats. This comes as the dangers posed by uncrewed aerial systems have become a national cause celebre due to a number of high-profile incidents. This includes still-unexplained drone incursions over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia last year, as well as more recent incidents in New Jersey and over multiple U.S. facilities in the United Kingdom, all of which The War Zone was first to report on.

The new counter-drone strategy is said to build upon a number of existing efforts, including the establishment of the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office (JCO) in 2020. It is also set to tie into a new Pentagon initiative to help speed up the acquisition and fielding of new counter-drone capabilities dubbed Replicator 2. The first Replicator effort has been focused on getting more uncrewed systems into the hands of U.S. warfighters. In addition, the heads of U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) have been given new synchronizer roles to help coordinate counter-drone preparedness (including the training and equipping of relevant forces) and actual responses to incidents.

“Enabled by growing commercial innovation and the increasing sophistication of artificial intelligence (AI), autonomy, and networking technology, unmanned systems are fundamentally changing how militaries of all sizes, capacities, and capabilities – as well as non-state actors – achieve their objectives,” the fact sheet on the new counter-drone strategy explains. “From the Middle East to Ukraine and across the globe – including in the U.S. homeland – unmanned systems are reshaping tactics, techniques, and procedures; challenging established operational principles; and condensing military innovation cycles.”

“At the operational level, these systems are making it more difficult for forces to hide, concentrate, communicate, and maneuver. They allow adversaries to more easily surveil, disrupt, or attack our forces, assets, and installations, potentially without attribution. At the strategic level, unmanned systems provide aggressors with the ability to reduce the initial human, financial, and reputational costs of conflict. The relatively low-cost, widely available nature of these systems has, in effect, democratized precision strike.”

CobraJet is a drone interceptor that thinks it's a Gen 5 fighter
By David Szondy
December 13, 2024
Looking like a miniature F-22 crossed with an equally small F-35B, SkyDefense's CobraJet is being marketed by the company as an AI-enabled eVTOL interceptor. It sports electric jets capable of speeds of over 200 mph (322 km/h) for taking out hostile drones.

There are some things in the aerospace field that look like a major breakthrough just waiting to happen and others that seem too good to be true. The CobraJet is one of those that sit right on the line in between.

On the surface, it seems like a remarkable concept. It's an anti-drone interceptor that appears to be a miniature version of a fifth-generation fighter plane.

What's more, it's supposed to pack the VTOL lift fan and direct thrust technology developed by Lockheed Martin and partners (at a cost of billions of dollars) into an airframe only 6 feet long (1.8 m) with a wingspan of 5 feet (1.5 m). More than that, it's powered by an "electric jet," which is basically a set of turbines inside a duct that are turned by an electric motor to generate thrust.
