China's third aircraft carrier

Post by funkervogt »

Their first carrier was an old Ukrainian ship that they bought and fixed up.

Their second carrier was an indigenously made copy of the first ship, with minor improvements.

Their third carrier is of completely Chinese design, and is about as big as an American supercarrier. Satellite photos show the Chinese have built it at an impressive rate.

How active are the two existing chinee carriers? How is chinese carrier operational doctrine shaping up?
Are the chinese shaping up on deck procedures and actually getting the planes off and onto the carrier?

Or are the chinese still in the 'have carrier, what now?' phase?

Only a matter of time before they have a rival number of ships to our own. I'm sure the US military is studying this, but it's clear the balance of power is starting to shift.

China has finished the carrier and launched it today. The ship leapfrogged the steam catapult launcher still in use among all but one American aircraft carrier, and has an advanced electromagnetic launcher instead.
“This shows that Chinese engineers are now able to indigenously manufacture the full suite of surface combatants associated with modern naval warfare, including corvettes, frigates, destroyers, amphibious assault ships, and now an aircraft carrier,” he said. “This ability to construct a very complex warship from the ground up will inevitably result in various spin-offs and benefits for the Chinese shipbuilding industry.”

...The Type 003 employs a catapult launch, which experts had said appears to be an electromagnetic-type system like one originally developed by the U.S. Navy. China’s official Xinhua News Agency confirmed the Fujian employed the electromagnetic system in a report on Friday’s launch.

Progress Making Nation’s Third Aircraft Carrier Fully Operational– Analysis
November 30, 2023

Introduction:
(Eurasia Review) Chinese developers are believed to have started testing electromagnetic catapults on China’s third aircraft carrier, which analysts say is an important milestone in the country’s naval ship construction.

The catapults will be used to launch airplanes from the carrier, which is named Fujian after the Chinese province closest to Taiwan. The Fujian features a so-called Catapult Assisted Take-Off Barrier Arrested Recovery, or CATOBAR, system that is much more advanced than systems on the first two carriers.

The first aircraft carriers – Liaoning and Shandong – use a less advanced ski jump-style launch system but the Fujian’s CATOBAR will help launch a bigger variety of aircraft faster and with more ammunition.

A video clip, said to be filmed from an overflying airplane and shared first on China’s Weibo microblogging website, shows what appeared to be a test vehicle being dropped from a catapult position on the Fujian aircraft carrier into the water.

The apparently successful test took place on Sunday.
