North Korea test-fires 2 more missiles as US sends carrier
Source: AP

By KIM TONG-HYUNG today

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Fighter jets roared off the USS Nimitz as the nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier and its battle group began exercises with South Korean warships on Monday, hours after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles in an apparent protest of the allies’ expanding drills.

The seventh missile test this month underscored heightening tensions in the region as both the North’s weapons tests and the U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises have intensified in a cycle of tit-for-tat.

The launches may have been timed for the arrival of the USS Nimitz and its strike group, including a guided missile cruiser and two destroyers, which engaged in air defense exercises and other drills with South Korean warships in waters near Jeju island.

Jang Do Young, a South Korean navy spokesperson, said the drills were aimed at sharpening joint operational capabilities and demonstrating the U.S. commitment to defend its ally with the full range of options, including nuclear, in face of the North’s “escalating nuclear and missile threats.”

North Korea fires intercontinental ballistic missile after threatening US

Source: BBC
The long-range missile has been in flight for more than an hour and is expected to land short of Japanese waters on Wednesday morning, Japan's defence minister said.

Pyongyang's launch comes after it threatened retaliation against alleged US spy plane incursions over its land.

On Wednesday, both Japanese and South Korean military officials reported detecting the missile's launch around 10:00 local time (01:00 GMT).

Both countries later reported the missile was believed to be an ICBM, a long-range missile that can traverse continents.

North Korea's Kim orders sharp increase in missile production, days before US-South Korea drills

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again toured major munitions factories and ordered a drastic increase in production of missiles and other weapons, state media said Monday, as the South Korean and U.S. militaries announced they will begin major drills next week to hone their joint capability against the North’s evolving nuclear threats.

Kim’s push to produce more weapons also comes as U.S. officials believe Russia’s defense minister recently talked with North Korea about selling more weapons to Russia for its war with Ukraine.

The Korean Central News Agency said Kim visited factories producing tactical missiles, mobile launch platforms, armored vehicles and artillery shells on Friday and Saturday. He visited a spate of other munitions factories in early August.

During a stop at the missile factory, Kim set a goal to “drastically boost” production capacity so the facility can mass produce missiles to meet the needs of front-line military units, KCNA said.

In the past I would've just assumed this to be nothing more than the usual North Korean propaganda, but nowadays...

Let's hope those reports stay unconfirmed, because if it actually did happen, I could see China utilizing that as an opportunity for Taiwan. The U.S. and NATO would be spread thin across many possible theaters and unable to manage any at once.

Yeah, I share the same concern. :?

I wonder if Trump would deter or foment that.
Assuming he can assume

North Korea claims to have put spy satellite into orbit. Analysts say that could make its military stronger

Wed November 22, 2023

North Korea on Wednesday said it had put its first spy satellite into orbit and vowed further launches to defend against what it called its “enemies’ dangerous military maneuvers.”

Analysts said if the spacecraft works, it could significantly improve North Korea’s military capabilities, including enabling it to more accurately target opponents’ forces.

The satellite, named “Malligyong-1,” was launched late Tuesday on a new carrier rocket, “Chollima-1,” according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

[...]

But South Korea called the launch a “clear violation” of a UN Security Council resolution that prohibits North Korea from using ballistic missile technology.

And Wednesday morning the South Korean government partially suspended an agreement it had with North Korea that limited the South’s reconnaissance and surveillance activities along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separates the two countries.

‘Force Against Force’ Approach Failing to Rein in North Korea
November 23, 2023

Introduction:
(The Asahi Shimbun) North Korea on Nov. 22 claimed it had successfully launched a military reconnaissance satellite, but it is not clear yet if the satellite was actually placed into orbit and is operating properly.

North Korea’s use of ballistic missile technology for the satellite launch is a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. We strongly condemn Pyongyang’s reckless act, which threatens regional stability.

The reconnaissance satellite is intended mainly to monitor the military actions of the United States and South Korea. North Korea has been developing the technology under a five-year plan to enhance its defense capabilities.

After two previous failures, North Korea says this attempt was successful and plans to soon launch several more spy satellites.

The current technological level of North Korean satellites is unclear, but if they are upgraded to become fully operational surveillance satellites, they will pose a serious military threat.
